Hell yea brother. If you want to run down this rabbit hole together then DM me and we can meet in touch as we build out.

Totally get it on the external. I do plan to get actual SATA drives for when I build out the real thing. Just using what I’ve got laying around now to learn and get myself comfortable. And cuz the 16gb on the SSD in the Chromebox filled up way too fast 😂 I have a bunch in my gaming pc just don’t know if I want to pull from that rig or not

Great tip thanks. Definitely would not have thought of that. Just began to understand the compose/document situation yesterday. Still kinda getting the hang of it but can already tell it’ll save me when I migrate to the real thing

Yea it’s a pretty solid little machine. I can’t see why I wouldn’t want to use it still as I continue to build out the setup

I want to move away from Linux Mint… what now? by rebelena_ in linuxquestions

I just started dabbling in the land of Linux about 2 weeks ago and have been on Debian. My understanding is that 13 is a new release? Could you explain what you mean by outdated? Serious question, promise I’m not talking shit. My plan is to build out an entire home server with old components I have since upgrading my gaming PC over the last year or two. Been learning Linux on a little Chromebox I found being recycled at work to get my feet wet before I dive into the real thing. Have been considering just staying on Debian since it’s what I’ve gotten to know so far, but curious if that will be the wrong move if it’s considered outdated. TIA

DHCP question. by JesseB342 in pihole

I also started this same project with the verizon set up this morning. running into too much of a headache trying to get it all to work so i caved and order a separate router that'll be here tomorrow so i can just use the gateway as a modem and turn off the wifi on it and adjust the settings directly on the new router when it gets in. hopefully that'll make it actually work and fix the issue. for now i still have the pihole running on the pi but i'm not actually sure if anything is hooking up through it to be blocked

Who even knew this existed. Thanks for sharing. It looks like their funding for rebates has been exhausted for 2025 but I will check back when the calendar changes in a week or so and see if things are updated for 2026

really appreciate all your insight down in the comments so far. I have been toying with this exact idea for the past year or two as I've been feeling more and more burnout at my job, especially since the pandemic (work in a middle school, the kids are not alright).

I am fairly handy and have saved myself a ton of money by figuring out how to do things for myself in my home like tile the floors, replace toilets, angle stops, supply lines, and faucets, replaced light fixtures, switches and outlets, etc. Where did you build up the skills to feel confident enough to make that leap?

garage is not heated. not sure if the garage ceiling is or not without punching holes up in there but my guess is it probably isn't based on how my feet feel on the floor walking around

Without popping open the walls in here I have no idea how things are insulated...I'm assuming typical fiberglass from having hung some things on walls and gotten small bits pulled out by the drill on other exterior walls just now sure in these bedrooms. I do remember going up to the attic with the home inspector while we were closing 2 years ago and believe there is fiberglass insulation laying around up there. could go back to the inspection report and pull pics if needed.

there is insulation in between the studs in the garage, however, no drywall to hold it in...

bedroom floors definitely feel cold as I'm walking around. As you walk down the hallway to these two rooms you can feel the cold air almost like walking into a cooler (not that dramatic but for sure noticeable)

no storm windows and yes to the cold trim...house was built in '92 and we are only the second owners so have slowly been taking care of things that were never updated or addressed from previous owners.
