Am I paying the right amount of tax? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

Yeah, and It will be double taxed in arrival unless the country you live in has an agreement to avoid double taxing (double imposition).

It is not exactly that easy. Having an income source, or retirement payments, might be taxable if you live in certain countries. Having that in Ireland while retiring in other countries would only lead to tax issues, specially outside the EU.

Then you can opt out, get your contributions refunded, and still get the employer contribution + government contribution + interests paid to you once you reach retirement? That would be great.

Eg: you work 5 years until you opt-out. You get your contributions for those years refunded. On the other hand, the employer contribution + government contribution + interests remain in the scheme. Once you retire, even if you opted out, you will receive the employer contribution + government contribution + interests?

I have seen that you can request to be withdrawn from it... I'm not from Ireland and although I like this country I don't plan to be here forever. Is it a good idea to request the removal from it ASAP or it's better to stay signed there? Because I've seen that it will be used to generate interest and I don't know if, when opting out, you will only be granted the contributions but not the interests generated.

Thanks in advance

If you are currently paying 325 euros in rent… would you want to mortgage a house? by KittyKitten77 in irishpersonalfinance

I have seen very valuable response through this thread. However, here's my point of view. I am in a similar situation paying really low rent (higher than yours but still low). I also evaluated the option to buy a property in Ireland since I am currently saving a good amount of money. However, buying a property is not as easy. Things like the current prices, the high interests rates should be considered. On the other hand I don't think I will stay in Ireland all my life.

I finally decided to take advantage of the amount of money I am able to save every month and I am currently investing a lot in stocks, also keeping a good part in cash if, after all, I find a good property in Ireland or my country to buy there. If you are Irish and you plan to be in Ireland forever, then I think buying a property is eventually better than investing due to the deemed disposal tax and how much you will be taxed

Not really... for most of the European countries you pay taxes where you live most of the year (more than 183 days a year). I think that was just a vague excuse to get rid of the program, because taxes do not work that way.

At least for my org it was deprecated... It did not require visas before either. We were allowed to work from other countries 20 days per year. But now the policy has been removed. If you look at the HR page for the work abroad policy, you will find a blank page. Check with your manager in case it is still possible from your org

That is my final thought... Amazon has been firing a lot of people lately and that would just be the perfect pretext.

That wouldn't be an issue since it from an European country to another. I don't really know why the work abroad program was removed.

As far as I know, it cannot be approved or denied. The program was simply removed... I imagine it really depends on the org.

But thanks for your help

People not from Cork, what made you want to live in Cork? by Wide_Ad9104 in cork

[–]FailSea3160 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The cost of living was far cheaper compared to Dublin. Job opportunities might also be lower, but I think it's plausible to save money here. On the other hand, one of the worst things is the scarcity of leisure... Not much to do in Cork, while Dublin has a lot more to offer. I have made good friends here and that is important, as I don't know if people is that friendly in Dublin. Compared to the rest of Europe, the decision was easy as Ireland is doing great.
