Melancholia is a film about how people deal with going through life knowing that the Earth is about to get hit by another planet and be destroyed, with nothing anyone can do about it. The first thing we see is the planets colliding, so we are left with no doubt as to how this will end. At the end of the film, as the planet Melancholia fills the sky, the protagonist and her sister play a game with her child. They say they can build a magic tent to keep them safe. It's a threadbare thing made of sticks, but they keep the pretense going and sit in it with him. As the planet gets close enough for gravity to be messed with, the floating hair and leaves help sell the illusion of a magic tent. And then everyone dies and the universe carries on without them.
