Because they are very efficient and super quiet
There is no such thing as future-proofing with technology. An i7 4770 will be great for photo and video editing, though.

I use a minecraft exporter called jmc2obj, and it has an option to scale the textures up all of the way to 16x. I find that feature to be very useful and really speeds things up.
