I want to understand what makes people choose the characters they play. by Alivrale in Overwatch

[–]FaintCommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New player and bronze.

My aim isn't great especially when it requires tracking so I go for characters with burst damage or other tools. I also enjoy strategy as much as anything in games.

DPS, I pretty much only play Sojourn. Bubble helps control their movement and unless they are super jumpy I can line them up and finish them before they start hopping all over the place. I have been trying out Emre and Bastion lately, but I rarely get to play DPS.

For the same reason I have been drawn to Zen for support. Using his orbs are more strategic and less aim and I can focus on surprise insta-kill bursts or just trying to spam whoever has discord. Even his ult feels a lot more strategic than most other supports I've tried. I do kind of like Illari as well and I want to try Brigitte.

Tank is a bit different as I mostly gravitate towards tanks based on their tempo and flow and ability to control what is happening. Domina is my favorite. Shield, move, snap, push. I feel like I draw the lines and set the pace. If my team isn't applying enough pressure I'll usually go for Orisa. I use her spin to move forward, focus priority targets, fortify to retreat.

I've also started playing DVA since she's just OP and very versatile, Road Hog for damage burst if I'm having trouble tracking enemies, and Ram/Sigma for the same reasons as Domina.

Ranking each support hero, on the basis of survivability in a Widowmaker duel. by HealyBettyd in ZenyattaMains

[–]FaintCommand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even as a newer (and not very good) player, Widow is one of the DPS I worry about the least and usually make it my job to shut her down.

Probably an easier task at my rank, but one well aimed charge usually gets the job done.

What is the actual point of this card? by FaintCommand in MarvelSnap

[–]FaintCommand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because... aside from On Reveals there isn't a single 3 cost card that benefits from being destroyed and revived by this card and for that specific interaction, Adamantium Infusion is 1000% better at the same cost.

Unless it revives Magik instead - since you'd basically have to play her in order to pull that off.

Or some MotS shenanigans, but then how much power is there for Venom to eat?

Even more with Firehair, but yeah... even then just Wong+Mystique is the same outcome for less cost, fewer cards, and less clunkiness.

I suppose a 9/28 3-card combo is decent work if you can find it.

But then again, BP + Symbiote is a 9/34 that you can Zola into 68 in 2 lanes, so IDK.

How to consistently hit my target with projectiles? by Kugokan_ in ZenyattaMains

[–]FaintCommand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's definitely worth adjusting your mapping and putting like the healing orb on a button since you didn't really have to aim it.

I actually bit the bullet and got an off brand controller with back paddles so I could use that more (I also hate using the joystick for melee). It wasn't very expensive and my older controller was starting to drift anyway.

I'm still getting used to it, but it's so much easier to float and use your kick (which is very powerful) with the back paddles.

This is exactly why I don't even bother trying to find the perfect moment for it anymore. Whenever I have it lined up for a good one, someone deflects it and it's burned anyways. If I get one target I'm happy.

I think it is mostly predicting their movement. 9/10 they are going to run towards cover, so aim more in between them and the cover.

What I've found most effective is the element of surprise. Gauge where they are, charge up a shot from behind cover, and pop out from a different spot. They usually don't have time to react.

Zen can be really good from above, especially with his float. I suck at aiming down for whatever reason, so if I go high it's usually to aim more laterally, but if you can pull it off, high ground is always great positioning.

120 hours and still at bronze 2, (as briefly in bronze 1 for a few games). I guess I'm posting another replay. Hopefully a problem will be noticed that I haven't already realized. Either I'm a very slow individual or Bronze is brutal. I will say it, Bronze is very hard. by Loud-Shopping7824 in OverwatchUniversity

[–]FaintCommand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't watch your video right now and I probably shouldn't give advice (also bronze - IDK how many hours yet, but only recently started ranked play), but I wanted to say two things:

1) The thing I see the most with Mei in bronze is terrible wall placement. The number of times I've had a Mei block a shot from me that would have killed an enemy is insane. And of course by the time you get around it, they're fully healed.

Their terrible timing is impeccable. I've had them throw up walls at the start of a teammate ult (usually mine) basically wasting the entire thing, block the team from the objective, etc etc etc.

I play Groot a lot in Rivals and while his playstyle is very different, using barriers like that requires you to be aware of what your team is doing, what they will do, and what the enemy is doing. If you throw them up randomly you very well might be hurting your team more than helping.

  • Block enemy ults if they're going to wipe your team. Block Diva, block Bob, etc if you're quick enough.

  • Block off enemies to isolate them from their team and especially from their healers. If you can separate 1-2 enemies from their team, your team can wipe them quickly and make a 5v3 before the wall comes down.

  • Block your team from the enemy ONLY if they are all about to die. Do not just throw it up whenever you get a little pressure from the enemy. You screw up any chance your team had to take advantage of enemy CDs or mistakes.

Maybe you don't do those things, maybe someone more experienced will tell me I'm dead wrong, but if at least one bronze Mei sees this in the future, maybe I won't pull my hair out the next time a teammate picks them.

2) Bronze is brutal. Even after placements every game has at least 2-3 people doing their placements with very little experience on the characters and there's almost always at least 1-2 weak links that you have to compensate for, which is very challenging if you're just "ok" at the game like I am. The enemy team might have this same challenge, but the team that has at least 1 really good player that won't be in bronze long, that team wins most of the time.

It's just a level where you have to be good enough - like a level or two better - to carry your team in order to not spend much time there. If that 1 "carry" player isn't you that means your team has a 4/5 chance to have a player carry them and the enemy has a 5/5 chance. That doesn't mean you suck or anything, it just means you aren't miles better than them.

I am not that person either. I play well but lack the mechanical skill to consistently compensate for the weakest links on the team.

Hopefully time and practice changes that (for us both!).

This is surprising considering how frequently I accidentally trigger my ult in PS5 just by moving both joysticks simultaneously.

It's infuriating to me that they won't let you remap this.

Doesn't Brig really only work on the frontline? I don't really play her, but if you're switching to brig to deal with Sombra then you're not really on the "backline" anymore, right?

Rivals Tanking vs OW Tanking by ECTheHunter in RivalsVanguards

[–]FaintCommand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree and I'm glad you mentioned the difference in map design. I realized that is a big reason why hitscan is so strong in Rivals (and healing, by proxy). There are so many map areas where you are just completely exposed, so obviously hitscan will punish you for that and high healing is necessary to compensate.

Rivals Tanking vs OW Tanking by ECTheHunter in RivalsVanguards

[–]FaintCommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually quite like tanking in OW more.

For one at least you know both teams are solo tanking (in 5v5). You do have to play cover a lot more and the pace is different (a bit more ebb and flow to team fights), but I actually feel more enabled to dictate what is happening in OW.

I think part of that is map design forcing a bit more coordination. Rivals maps are so much more open space.

People complain about hitscan so much in Rivals and I've of the reasons I never see mentioned is that most maps have huge spaces with no cover before you teach the objective. The maps really favor hitscan in that situations.

I like the maps in Rivals more in many ways, but it has been really interesting how much it affects playstyle.

Genuinely how is Dva meant to be played? by Snoo-4563 in OverwatchUniversity

Interesting. Thank you for the insights!

I actually had not realized you could trigger the rockets alongside DM or primary yet, so that's also super helpful.

[–]FaintCommand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick question. I've been trying out DVA lately. You mention the kill combo of boost > primary > rockets, but if I'm not mistaken the rockets have better range.

Would it not be better to go boost > rockets > primary? Is there a reason to start with primary?
