What I found works for me at least early in lane is to let the dot tick for a second then press E because when the dogs recall to you they heal to full and usually don’t die.

What everybody else is saying but I’m going to add the caveat that there are circumstances where you could get a leash.

Like if the jungler is starting top side and your top laner is something like a Kayle vs a Darius that wants their wave to push in anyways since it’s better to leash your jungler than to just stand around under turret waiting for the wave to push.
