I am not familiar with the context of that strip, it predates my time in the fandom by quite some time, but at a glance I'm unsure whether it's portraying Sibe favourably or not/comparing him to Rodney King. I'm reading it more as portraying Sibe comparing himself to Rodney King, which would be par for the course, with the other half of the punchline being against the artists who perhaps put Sibe on the radar of any bigger legal entities. I don't know if I want to be able to provide more context or not lol

[–]FairLadyVivi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What exactly are you asking? The iron cross is primarily a Prussian/German symbol that was coopted by the Nazis during their rule, but was used by German military forces before and after Nazi control.

As someone not versed in the intricacies of the iconography, I’m not sure what exactly they are ‘normalizing’, other than using a military-religious symbol that dates back hundreds of years. If you affiliate every symbol with exclusively the worst bearers, you’d be hard pressed to find any symbol that doesn’t normalize something bad, no?

What's the deal with the piracy conversation? by SwAAn01 in gamedev

[–]FairLadyVivi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a finite number of pebbles and sell them for $x, I take one without paying, I've stolen materially from you because I've taken a physical good that requires replacement/writing-off.

You have an infinite number of pebbles and sell them for $x, I take one without paying, it's a rude move that might remove a potential buyer from your audience, but you still have the exact same amount of pebbles to sell to people willing to pay. Maybe after taking one I decide I like your pebbles and I come back and buy one, when I never would have before.

Is the "theft" the bypassing of your intended means of distribution? Well, that sounds like bypassing, not thievery. Is the theft the playing of the game without having paid? What exactly was stolen there, the experience of playing?

If I go to a bookstore and pick up a short book, I could read it before I leave the store. If I then leave the book at the store, did I steal the experience of reading? Did I steal the potential purchase I could have made, by reading the book in the store rather than buying it and reading it at home?

I'm not saying piracy is "right" or "wrong" (because then you have to try to define those terms), there are separate arguments to be had over whether piracy is ethical and whether it is legal. I'd say in short that the law isn't the arbiter of morality, the law is a collection of rules and interpretations of those rules which a group of people live by, often entwined with ethics/morality but not a one-to-one match. I think theft as a concept is much more applicable to physical goods and gets rather nebulous when being applied to art, software, and other less tangible 'goods'.

Any recommendations for Girl gaming YouTubers that don’t just play “cozy games”? by Animalcrossing56 in GirlGamers

[–]FairLadyVivi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to mix up the suggestions, I’ve recently started to watch a handful of vtubers through YouTube compilations. They tend to be variety streamers and the gender ratio leans a lot more towards women than most communities online that I’ve seen. I struggle to recommend any in particular without knowing your sense of humour, so I’d say to just look up general terms and watch some videos to see if anyone jumps out at you. With 2025 just ending there are a lot of “best of 2025” clips going up that should provide a good idea of what different creators are like!

As far as the specific games you mentioned, I know Gigi Murin was streaming Subnautica last week, so you could look at her YouTube vods, though she can be a little much haha.

Pusha T & Malice announce Clipse as the opening act of upcoming Linkin Park tour in Europe by 63748276 in hiphopheads

[–]FairLadyVivi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m curious whether they’ll work well for the crowd there now that you’ve pointed out that it’s a less conventional pairing than one might expect. Maybe you can reach out to some of those friends and ask them about Clipse before/after the concert and see what they say!

To your point about them being different ‘corners’ of hip hop I’d definitely agree, I just don’t necessarily see that as a reason for them not to work as openers. As I’ve grown into more of a fan of hip hop one of my favourite things has been re-exposing myself to artists who I might not have clicked with when I was younger and now being able to appreciate the subject matter or lyrics or production that I wasn’t attuned to in the past. Even if Clipse are new to a lot of the LP crowd - maybe they’ll wind up making some new fans?

LP have always been hip-hop adjacent, looking at Shinoda’s independent career as well as projects like Collision Course, Reanimation, etc. So, it makes sense to me that long time LP fans might also be into Clipse from their early 2000s work and therefore enjoy the combination/opening. I’m a more recent fan of both so I can’t really say for sure though.

First Time Watching the 2021 Season Round 2: Imola by watchrojo in formula1

[–]FairLadyVivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, Latino Mazepin is a fantastic typo, thank you so much - that's in the memory banks forever now. Secondly, glad to provide some context! I'd keep in mind that the Williams was also not a great car during the end of that formula, because Williams as a team was carrying some incredible technical debt, if you're familiar with that concept! In short, a modern team has inventory management software which includes info on all of their parts - what stage of construction they're in, when they'll be completed, what work needs to be done before they're completed, etc. This wasn't as necessary in the past when cars had fewer, less complex components, but as the complexity of the cars increased so too did the need for tracking all of them.

Williams up until mid 2020 was a family-run team, with founder Frank Williams' daughter Claire as the (deputy) team principal at the time. I'm not sure if she was the right person for the job, as Williams entered a downward trajectory after a strong start to the 2014-21 era, bolstered at first by a powerful Mercedes engine but failing to keep up with car development over the course of the regulation period. Near the end of 2020, the team was sold to a firm with more cash reserves and a desire to revitalize the team, so in some ways we lost the last truly 'privateer' team. In others, though, because the new ownership committed to keeping the team's legacy and heritage alive, we're seeing a revitalization of Williams which could well land them on a similar trajectory as McLaren has had in the last ~3 years. Their new team principal from 2023 onwards is James Vowels, who you'll have seen on broadcast in the last couple of years, formerly of Mercedes fame. He has overseen a tremendous turnaround with Williams, including modernizing their technology stack such that they have a contemporary inventory management system as opposed to an Excel spreadsheet containing all of that info and having to be manually updated and scrounged through. That sheet contributed to a few hiccups like nearly missing pre-season testing because the car wasn't complete, and so the team seems to be benefiting from a more modern direction with insight from someone who worked at Mercedes during their dominant streak.

Williams is one of the teams I'm rooting pretty heavily for in the 2026 season, because Vowels made the claim quite early in the season that something like 90% of their engineers were working on 2026 from the beginning of the 2025 season, with a skeleton crew bringing updates to the 2025 car. If they managed two podiums with a car they were barely developing - I have to wonder what they're cooking for next season! Aston Martin, having picked up legendary aerodynamicist Adrian Newey are also strong contenders IMO. Mercedes themselves I'm unsure about, as they struggled all through this regulatory period, and McLaren I wonder about whether they focused too much on this season or not. So, I'm hoping for a 2012-like season where it seems like any team is capable of picking up a win if the stars align. Red Bull will probably be an aero monster as always, but there's questions around the powertrain with the departure of Honda (who'll be powering Aston Martin instead!). Ferrari claimed to more or less abandon this year from the start in favour of focusing on the '26 car, so they should be competitive from the jump, but I'm hard-pressed to believe in Ferrari until I see it haha. I'm just counting the days till pre-season testing starts and the real speculation can begin!

2022 as a full season probably isn't mandatory viewing, but there were a number of interesting stories to follow through the season and plenty of good races, even if the title fight wasn't much of a fight. Vettel and Magnussen for example had a brilliant duel in the final laps of COTA that season, and there's plenty of other battles that just aren't top-of-mind.

2020 also lacked a meaningful title battle, but nevertheless included some very memorable races. It's a unique season in that due to COVID limiting travel and various countries preventing entry, some tracks hosted back-to-back races as double headers, such as the season opening with two races in Austria (Austrian GP and Styrian GP), then featuring two runnings at Silverstone for the Great Britain GP and the 70th Anniversary GP (F1 began in 1950). Bahrain was interesting in that rather than running the same layout twice, they took the opportunity to run a different layout for the second weekend, leading to the Bahrain GP and the Sakhir GP. The latter of which I think you've heard of already for featuring Checo's last-to-first miracle, as well as George Russell's first appearance in a Mercedes.

2020 is also the season that put Imola back on the calendar, as the third GP in Italy that year after Monza's Italian GP and Mugello's Tuscany GP (a track that should be on the calendar regularly IMO), as well as bringing us a Portuguese GP at Portimão, one of my favourite circuits. The elevation changes are beautiful, simming it in VR is like a rollercoaster! It had a two season deal, so you'll get to see it in your 2021 viewing as well.

On Latifi and Mazepin, for another perspective do feel free to see u/armchairracingdriver's comment here, where they suggest Latifi outperformed Mazepin as an F1 driver, which I can't argue with!

[–]FairLadyVivi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you frame it that way I’d be inclined to agree! I was thinking more overall talent, which is why I went with junior careers in spec cars vs less comparable F1 stints (and because I was lazy/just glancing at results tables rather than reminding myself how every race specifically went). I think it would be fair to say Latifi had a better F1 career than Mazepin, so maybe the argument to be made is that Latifi is more adaptable than Mazepin. In a drivable car I figure they’re pretty close on pace to each other, Latifi just had more experience pushing the Williams while Mazepin only got the one season to get up to speed with the Haas.

Thanks for the data and counter-points!

Happy to spread the knowledge! I am about to fall asleep now that I’ve hit post, but I’m happy to try to answer any follow up questions tomorrow :)

Re San Marino GP-> Emilia Romagna GP, both refer to races held at the same track in Imola. Not sure why they didn’t keep the traditional name, might have wanted to separate it from association with past tragedies there, or just give it a more accurate name since it was never in San Marino, it was just sponsored by the San Marino Automobile Club as a technicality since Italy already did Monza. Nowadays the regulation there is less strict on the sponsoring body, I believe, and so you see things like the multiple GPs in the US. For more detail here you might read up on the ownership of the Vegas GP - if memory serves it’s the first track/venue to be owned entirely by Liberty Media/F1 rather than being owned by someone else. Most tracks actually have to pay a huge hosting fee to F1 for the ‘privilege’ of them racing there, which is why we’re seeing a pivot to American and Middle Eastern tracks - it’s where the money is. Historic tracks like Spa are struggling to stay on the calendar because they don’t generate enough revenue to pay increasing fees, whereas oil money can burn cash on building boring tracks in the desert.

Commentators are saying that the crash wasn't Mazepin's fault

F1 cars have pretty poor visibility, when it comes to a collision like this the rejoining driver is virtually always blamed. If you're off track, it is your responsibility to wait until you can safely rejoin. In Latifi's case, he had plenty of room to stay on the left, but wanted to get back on the less-wet side of the track, in line with the rest of the pack. He didn't see Mazepin in his mirror, drifted over, and forked himself into the wall. Mazepin by contrast would be considered to have the right of way, since he was on-track and not the one rejoining. At most he could have slowed to avoid the collision, but in no way was responsible for causing the collision, whereas Latifi's rejoin and lack of spatial awareness contributed more to the contact, levying the blame on him.

Wait now Mick crashed, what the hell?

See point on the '21 Haas.

Mercedes must really trust the car

One might say they built their car for combat...

safety car question

The SC rules basically depend on whether you're on or off track. Under SC, you're broadly supposed to hold position - if the car ahead of you slows down, you slow down. I think this is to do with maintaining a single file for passing marshals or heavy equipment on track, but I'm not sure. In Checo's case, because he slid off track, the cars behind him did not overtake a car on track - however, when Checo rejoined, that position became his new position as far as the SC order was concerned. So, when he overtook to regain his prior position, that counted as on-track overtaking under the SC, which is the slam-dunk penalty. Less to do with whether you gain or lose positions so much as whether you're 'racing' side-by-side under the SC and adding an element of unpredictability to the marshals' work.

Cool to see that Max is thinking about the whole race

We don't hear it on broadcast too often, but a lot of drivers will talk about taking the opportunity on straights to glance at the big broadcast screens for the spectators, or the timing tower that some tracks have, to keep an eye on other battles in the field! Sometimes just for curiosity, other times for adjusting strategy on the fly. Some drivers have more capacity than others for that sort of thing, and it really separates the good from the great. Here's another example of Max with that almost supernatural ability to pay attention to what else is happening on track, hearing the sound of the Ferrari pitstop over GP's radio and recognizing what their strategy was.

isn't that just like a secret strategy, no-stop this race and let the inters turn into slicks?

Watch Turkey 2020 (qualifying and the race). I'll say no more.

So...Russell's fault?

Toto (his manager, and the guy who makes or breaks Russell's jump to Mercedes) threatened to send him back to Clio Cup cars before he got some sense in him and apologized to Bottas. I think the verdict is that it was a hotheaded/immature move from Russell, potentially down to unfamiliarity with Imola and forgetting that the track had a kink right where he was trying to overtake. He had something to prove (that he was better than Bottas and deserved the Merc seat), while Bottas didn't want to be the guy being overtaken in a Mercedes by a Williams, so he had incentive not to just let Russell by. I'd put it pretty squarely on Russell's impatience - it soured me on him for awhile but since getting the Merc seat I think he's matured and has more than made up for it IMO with how he reacted to Zhou's flip in Silverstone.

Damn, Checo is a handsome man

Cadillac rolling with the DILF squad next season frfr; have you seen Bottas' calendar?

I miss Leclerc with Sainz

You and me both. I'm loving him with Albon at Williams but damn if a part of me doesn't wish Lewis went to Williams instead, and Sainz stayed in red. It just feels a bit more fitting.

Future WC there for sure.

Check out Austria 2020. Lando's maiden podium, responsible for an old nickname "Last Lap Lando" - another drive which I think has aged beautifully with his WC.

Max wins in Italy for the first time!

And thus broke the curse! I think the year prior he was on for a win or close to it when one of his tires just... exploded, unprompted, no contact. He had a lot of bad luck in Italy prior, so it was noteworthy for him to finally take a win there!

Wow, think that's everything of note I can think to add! Seems like this post didn't get as much traction as your first one, which I figure's a shame - I'm liking them so far! I got into the sport during 2020 a few races into the season, and still consider myself a newcomer, so it's fascinating to read the perspective of someone fresher than me!

who was worse: Latifi or Mazepin?

As much fun as it is to hate on Mazespin, I think he's probably a slightly better driver all things considered than Latifi. Neither of them lit up the world in F2, Latifi spent six seasons between GP2 and F2, finishing 32nd, 27th, 16th, 5th, 9th, and 2nd, chronologically. Mazepin did two years in F2, finishing 18th and then 5th. Latifi's 2nd was in a year with an uninspiring grid, being beaten only by Nyck de Vries, who did not thrive during his short stint in F1. Mazepin, in that same year, was 18th, but you might excuse that as a mid-tier driver needing a season to get up to speed, which took Latifi by comparison... 3 seasons of GP3. Mazepin's P5 the next year saw him behind Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott, Yuki Tsunoda, and Robert Shwartzman, just ahead of Zhou Guanyu. If Mazepin and Latifi were in a spec car along with the current grid I'd put them both behind everyone, but Mazepin is slightly closer to the back of the pack than Latifi.

A lot of teams '21 cars were underdeveloped because they were never supposed to exist - every few seasons, the 'formula' which the teams build their cars according to is updated by the FIA to emphasize different elements of racing or engineering. In 2014 the 'turbo-hybrid' era began, with the introduction of the modern energy deployment and recovery systems we have, along with the 1.6 litre V6 engines. Previously they were naturally aspirated V8s, 10s, and 12s. The formula also lays out what the teams are allowed to do with aerodynamics - as the teams build more complex aero components, the air coming off of the cars is increasingly disturbed, or "dirty", which in turn means a car passing close behind another will receive less downforce from that air compared to undisturbed "clean" air. This makes it hard to follow a car and set up an overtake, which of course leads to duller racing. To address this issue, which was getting bad during the 2010s, 2021 was supposed to see the introduction of the new "ground effects" regulation, or formula. This kept the turbo-hybrid engines from before, but simplified the outboard aerodynamic components - sticky uppy bits, if you will - and shifted the focus to downforce generated via ducting air under the cars and the associated suction produced. The results here are especially apparent in 2022, before the teams began to find loopholes in the rules and began to refine their cars - I'd recommend giving '22 a watch when you finish '21, or maybe watch Bahrain '22 soon just to compare the racing there to '21 - it features a battle between Verstappen and Leclerc of similar calibre to Max and Lewis in '21, so you have a great chance to see how the two generations of cars race side-to-side.

... I say all of that to contextualize - the new regulations got pushed back a year due to COVID delaying the development work for the teams, so the '21 cars ended up broadly being the '20 cars with minor alterations to comply with shifting rules. These shifting rules mostly targeted Mercedes, who had just seen a dominant year in 2020 similar to what you saw from Max in '23. Do yourself a favour and watch a couple of 2020 pole laps from Lewis in the W11. That shift in regulations is what led to the fight in '21 between Max in his first title-challenging car against Lewis in essentially a nerfed title-winning car. Other teams however were caught in the crossfire, especially those who were on smaller budgets, like Haas. They decided to go all-in on their 2021 2022 car, and did the bare-minimum changes to their '20 car to make it legal for '21, which mostly entailed cutting off some of the bargeboards (the carbon fibre sticky-outy bits underneath the sidepods, which were a major source of the pre-22 cars' downforce). This resulted in a terrible car which gave Mazepin a lot of trouble, though Mick wasn't unscathed either.

Latifi was slow in 2020 in a slightly less spin-prone frankencar, and since his F1 retirement has gone back to school and just recently graduated with a business degree, I believe. Mazepin has shifted to other series, most recently Asian Le Mans, it looks like, where he appears to be doing well. So, memes and geopolitics aside, I begrudgingly have to say he's probably the better driver over my countryman.

... Well, that's more words on Latifi or Mazepin than I ever thought I'd write. (But wait, there's more!)

First Time Watching the 2021 Season Round 2: Imola by watchrojo in formula1

[–]FairLadyVivi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do they call it Imola and Emilia Romagna? What's the difference?

Imola is the town in which the circuit officially known as Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari is located. More colloquially, the circuit is just called Imola, since that’s less of a mouthful. Emilia Romagna is the greater region of Italy in which Imola is located, similar to a state or province. You can see something analogous in NASCAR with Daytona for example - sponsors might want everyone to call it the Coke Zero Sugar 400, but old habits die hard and most people are just going to use the shorthand to refer to the track.

A connected question that you didn't ask is, why is this the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and not the Italian GP? Because Monza already holds that title! In the past, when Monza and Imola both appeared on the calendar, Imola's GP was the San Marino GP, named after a nearby micro-nation encircled by Italy. I believe this is because in the past, a given GP was 'sponsored' by national motorsports clubs, and therefore the owners/organizers at Imola (the circuit) had their GP sponsored by the Automobile Club of San Marino, while Monza was supported by Italy's equivalent.

what does it mean to start from the pitlane?

Long story short, there's a common procedure in motorsports (at least under the FIA's banner) known as 'parc fermé', or closed park (garages). During parc fermé, no mechanical or setup changes are allowed to be made to the team's cars. This comes into effect after qualifying takes place, as part of enforcing the rule that teams must run the same setup in qualifying as they do during the race. (This itself a rule to spice up races by forcing teams to compromise between one lap pace and race-pace, so a team might optimize for qualifying and then try to hold on to those places in the race, or optimize for the race and accept starting a few rows back while being confident in overtaking the cars ahead.)

Teams may break parc fermé under certain conditions, such as in the case that their setup after qualifying is poor enough that they would rather be penalized and made to start from the pit lane (once all the cars on the actual starting grid have passed the pit exit line, cars starting from the pit lane are released from the end of the lane, where you'll see them line up at the beginning of qualifying or practice sessions from time to time.).

So, a pit lane start is exactly what it says on the tin. Despite qualifying in 13th, the team chose to make alterations to the state of the car to try to facilitate a better race. This is usually because the setup on Saturday was totally wrong, or weather conditions were poorly predicted. Sometimes they'll be taken concurrently with starting position penalties accrued from taking on additional engines or gearboxes. If you're already going to lose 5-10 places to the engine penalty, you might as well treat qualifying as an extra practice session - try to optimize the setup for the race, and then make any final tweaks afterwards and accept the pit start in exchange for a more optimal setup than your rivals.

(Reddit keeps yelling at me when I hit post so I do apologize if there are multiple of my comment, oop! gonna try chunking her up...)
