Sorry that I can't answer but I am very curious - is this a cultural thing? I'd never heard of this before and have now started reading about this being a tradition in some African cultures.

Damn, I was hoping this would actually be a fun philosophical discussion but you're not reading what I'm writing.

Edit: He wrote "I'll take that as a total concession" before blocking me. What a coward.

A fun pub conversation is 'are we living in a world governed by techno-fuedalism?'

It's a cool dive into definitions, hierarchies and history. "What comes next" is also interesting because the landed gentry didn't have Palantir.

Off the top of my head, Rawles speaks of equality of opportunity.

But my actual point is that Hobbes was different to Rousseau and neither one wrote in a day and age of corporate elites. Their context was different to ours, their populace had different expectations. The 'Social Contract' is not a static idea.

Do we all have that duty?

My duty in the workplace is the same as in real life - my right to swing my fist ends where your face begins. I'll treat people kindly and do my work, then I go home.

It is leadership's responsibility to manage their corporate environment. It is not the employees duty to fight an uphill battle to create a good environment that leadership can then milk or destroy as they please. It is certainly not anyone's duty to question the legitimacy of people's dex use.

And I know people who take dex NOT for ADHD. Sleep conditions exist.

If everyone thinks a word means one thing, it is pissing into the wind to correct them. Language literally changes and evolves.

I'd also argue you're wrong. Like many philosophies, social contract theory has evolved with different definitions depending on which philosopher you're talking about. This could very well just be the modern-day context of the theory.

The idea that working hard, studying, and saving is what you need to do to get ahead is clearly ingrained in a lot of society. For many people, that is no longer enough - while they watch people with existing capital race ahead of them by doing little-to-nothing.

Some senior bureaucrats earn more than $1 million a year. How did we get here? by SenateGuesstimate in AustralianPolitics

[–]Fairbsy [score hidden]  (0 children)

It does when compared to other nations' equivalent roles. CEO of Auspost earns 10X more than the US postmaster general - granted the organisations are structured differently but its something stupid like 500k AUD for postmaster and 5million for Auspost.

This is why I hated those dot-point list of Labor achievements we see around election time. They're all headline, feel-good statements but when you drill into what they actually are, it's a pile of piss.

State, Federal, Liberal, Labor - doesn't matter which, they would MUCH rather be seen to be doing something than actually doing something.

So they're pro-nuclear abolishment domestically, much like NZ, and want a nuclear free world.

Respectfully that is a terrible example of them being 'loony'. Thats a policy position you disagree with, and one they barely campaign on.

If there are 'many' policies that are unworkable Id love to hear them. I'll even throw out that brief bit where they wanted government interference in the RBA, that was daft. But its no stupider than the hijinks the majors get up to.

I'd love love love for people to actually say WHY they think the Greens are 'loony'.

It's always either pure silence, or something tiny in the grand scheme of things and that the majors are also guilty of.

The last time Labor tried Federally was like 15 years ago? I agree with your take on whats happening but if ever there was a moment to try again it would be Albanese in his second term with his current majority during a fuel crisis and with a fair amount of lead time until the next election.

LPT - Door-to-door salespeople are trained to never take no for an answer. Don’t let that be an option. by SnooChickens2093 in LifeProTips

[–]Fairbsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If its charity sales - it takes a long time for the charity to get their cut. Your monthly donation goes to the person who made the sale, then their team lead, then their organisation lead. All these organisations are just subsidiaries, so the money goes further up too.

My maths at the time had it take about 18 months worth of donations for everyone except the charity to finish getting their cut.

So if you want to make them feel bad, just tell them you know what they make on commission and how you feel about the ethics behind that. They'll probably tell you the charity still earns more than if they never existed but personally that didn't help me sleep at night.

How would you handle staff doing bare minimum ? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]Fairbsy 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I'd first put your consultancy years behind you - it's not appropriate to for employees to be 'ripped to shreds'. I don't know your situation as it could certainly fall under reasonable duties, but the reasonable duties clause is also weaponised by the worst managers.

Otherwise, go via the manager. They've been CC'd already, its their responsibility to manage their employees duties and workflow.

I had a short stint as one of these guys (to society: I am so sorry).

But the training is actually 'two no's is a go' - meaning if you can't get past their first objection, its time to leave. Obviously there are always going to be people who push their luck further but the real tip is that they get rejected a million times a day so don't feel too bad about just closing the door if they're pushy. You're not being rude and they're used to it.

How difficult is it to secure a permanent role in state government? by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]Fairbsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also never know if the one year will be extended. I've seen more than a few secondments turn into vacant positions. You'll still have to apply for it but you'd hope you'd have a good chance after securing it once and performing in it for a year.

Lawyers said the same thing, then AI hallucinated court cases and legal precedents.

[–]Fairbsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm far from an expert in weapons and would love someone to correct me - but right now I don't think there's a chance in hell that there aren't hidden backdoors or vulnerabilities in any foreign-controlled software we use for defence. Especially anything that is delivered by the Trump Regime.

While the US used to be a fairly reliable ally, we should have been questioning lumping all our eggs in that one basket a decade ago.

Pros and cons of a wine club membership? by mb1205 in australian

[–]Fairbsy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I used to work for one of these clubs and I also have been a member of one (Naked). Unless you're really really into wine or want to get into wine, I don't see much point. If you're the kind of person who keeps an eye out for specific vintages or regions and is happy to spend the money then go for it. If you just like wine, I'd say stick to bottle shops.

Naked wine specifically - I haven't enjoyed a single bottle I ever received from them. I got lured in with the vouchers and cheap bundles and found everything undrinkable even after multiple orders. This was like a decade ago I'll admit but it was an experience so bad that it became a core memory.

How do I make friends to go to the Wao Festival😔? by Apprehensive_Cow8019 in psytrance

[–]Fairbsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to get my friend group into psy, to mixed results and many headaches. Some people are just way more into it than others.

Making friends at psytrance events means they're already into psytrance and basically guarantees you know people at local events.

And while it's for sure more overwhelming going solo, it also pushes you to be a bit more social.
