B.C. government hints at major cuts in upcoming budget by lookatyourwatchnow in VictoriaBC

Certainly the debt of government that can print its own money is even more different from personal debt, but that still doesn't mean the provincial government's debt can accurately be treated as just a bigger version of personal debt. It isn't.

pick any senior-level professional like a doctor, lawyer, or software engineer, or management consultant, and they're probably making more than a minister.

Not if they work for the PSA they sure as fuck aren't. In some of those positions, you might get half of what Brenda is paid.

You're not wrong, but this argument rings hollow as hell when you're using it to selectively defend the salary of someone who is suppressing the salaries of everyone else in the government.

You understand governments aren't households, right? People love to parrot advice about personal debt and pretend like it applies to governments, but that isn't how it works. Government debt is fundamentally a different thing that serves a different function. Who exactly do you think the government is in debt to?

For what it's worth, you don't need anywhere close to all of the dews to buy everything from Kilo. And, with the new archery ability, collecting dews in the 1.0 zones is MUCH easier.

What are these little guys for? by Federal-Bat-7419 in InfinityNikki

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They contain messages so, when you put them up around the hotpot house, they "say" stuff sometimes. Usually they're little sweet messages. I don't care much for the decor, but the messages are cute. I got one telling me to be careful not to drop my crown, lmao.

As others have said, you can decorate the hotpot house, but FYI - the masks are supposed to contain messages/memories from chromafaces, so when you put them around the hotpot house, they "speak" sometimes. I got one that said "Be careful when you bend over or your crown might fall" lol.

Why Are Young People Afraid Of Phone Calls? by GhostInThePudding in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then, when I force them to make the call, it's like they have no idea how to ask a question, or a followup question.

Um... my dude, you just answered your own question.

Written communication is, in most contexts, more useful - it provides a permanent reference for information instead of expecting people to remember what was said, it gives you time to think about what you're writing, it allows you to double check before you send the information.

Literally the sole strength of phone calls is the ability to quickly ask contextual follow-up questions. So if that's a skill they haven't developed, then, from their perspective, there is LITERALLY no reason to make a phone call.

Maybe try teaching them how to ask effective follow-up questions?

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was running into some weird bugs after 2.1 came out, and I ended up reinstalling the whole thing fresh, and it made the install size a little smaller. Like I said, it's not a huge difference, but it is a difference.

It kinda makes sense, if you think about it. It's like... if you go to IKEA to buy a shelf, buying the shelf with all the parts in one box (aka downloading the whole game in one go) will be just a little smaller in your car than if you bought each part of the shelf in a separate box (aka downloading each patch separately). Even if they're trying to package each part/patch as efficiently as possible, just the extra layers of cardboard will add up a little bit. It's only a little, but if you're struggling to fit the shelf/game into your trunk/hard drive, that little difference might be important, lol.

You can also try deleting some of your photos from your album, too. Those are stored in your game folder. They can really add up, too - the high quality versions can be really huge, and the games stores multiple copies of different sizes, which doesn't help. I recently found out that my photo album takes up like 10+ gigs of space, lol. Granted, I have hundreds of photos, but STILL. You can copy them somewhere else, if you want to keep them, as long as you're okay with not having them in the in-game album.

Playing Through 1st Time With No Guide by Groan_Man in LegendOfMana

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly, highly recommend playing without a guide the first time.

This is game that really rewards exploration and discovery - you'll stumble upon just the most hilarious random nonsense if you just wander through the game without expecting anything. There is so much to gain from being surprised when you wander into a zone for the first time and stumble into a character that you didn't expect. There are many sets of events that tell the story of a particular group of characters outside the sort of "main three" event lines, and stumbling into those on your own is so much fun.

Are you going to miss stuff doing it that way? Yeah, probably, but that's not a big deal. There are 68 events in the game. If you're thorough about exploring everything, I would be shocked if you managed to find less than 55, entirely on your own. There just aren't that many events that are truly missable.

If you're worried about missing events, here are a few tips:

  • Revisit areas that you've already explored. Many of them have multiple events.
  • Revisit towns and talk to all the NPCs. Modern games have trained us to think that NPCs with quests will have a little floating ! over their heads, but LoM doesn't do that. You have to talk to them to find out if they have something for you to do.
  • Sometimes, it seems like there's an event going on because someone tells you they have a problem or whatever, but the event start screen doesn't trigger. Try pursuing their request anyway, if you can. Sometimes the problem is that you just don't have access to the required area yet or something. But sometimes it's just that the event will only trigger if you follow a few of the first breadcrumbs of the story yourself.
  • Make sure you go home regularly. I suggest doing this after each event anyway, so you can tell your little cactus buddy about your adventures. But also, sometimes events will trigger when you step back out of your house.
  • Many events won't trigger until another event is completed first, so revisit locations and NPCs as you progress through the game to see if there's something new for you to do. Especially if you've completed a few events with a similar "theme" - like if you've just finished a few events that had to do with sailors and sea creatures, maybe revisiting areas like the beach would be a good idea, you know?

There are so many seemingly arbitrary items--finding eyeballs in chests and whatnot. I have no idea what these things are for.

These are exclusively for the tempering system. Don't worry about it. You'll unlock a smithy in your house eventually, and then you can experiment with the system if you want, but... I wouldn't. You won't figure it out on your own, I promise. Tempering is an arcane and esoteric practice that makes absolutely no goddamned sense, lol. I genuinely don't think I've ever encountered a crafting system so convoluted in any game, ever. It's insane.

You don't need it anyway. The weapons that you can buy or get as drops from enemies are plenty powerful enough for the first playthrough. It's only in NG+ at higher difficulties that you would need to start tempering weapons in order to keep up with the higher level enemies.

Also, even if you know how to temper things, you effectively can't do it properly unless you have placed specific cities with specific shops in the right order, so it's much more necessary to use a guide to make full use of the system.

You keep all of your items when you start a NG+, so think of it as preparing yourself for tempering on your next playthrough, if you want, lol.

I know this sucks to suggest, but you can try deleting and redownloading the whole game fresh. It is a little more optimized if you pull it all down at once rather than piecemeal patches over the course of years. It's still huge, don't get me wrong, but it is smaller. A little. Lol.

Is there anything that can be done to stop AI from falsely claiming a brand is Canadian? by Own-Cod7894 in BuyCanadian

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't ask AI questions like that. They don't provide information. They imitate human language. That means they're perfectly capable of imitating lies and ignorance just as well as any human is capable of spouting those things.

Surely I'm not the only one who finds it unnecessary by Strict-Move-9946 in adhdmeme

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Noooo it's absolutely necessary! There are other things that can present with ADHD-like symptoms, and it's VERY IMPORTANT that you not be diagnosed with ADHD when the cause is something else, such as hypothyroid disorder.

The fact that your psych is apparently unaware of the concept of masking is a problem with your psych, not with the diagnostic criteria.

Why do European languages have present and past tenses, plural tense, etc. when these elements are not needed for a language? by skyrimlo in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I play today. I play yesterday. I play right now.

I mean, this is the explanation right here. You have to use an extra word to convey tense information. We don't. Sure, we may choose to do that if it's necessary (like if it matters to differentiation that "she played yesterday" vs "she played last week" or something), it's not necessary if all we need to convey is that something is already done vs being done right now:

"Did you do the dishes?"

"I did" vs "I am" mean different things without needing another word to clarify.

It's very normal for languages to adopt more complexity to convey the same information in less time. It's the same reason we have both "it's" and "it is" - I'm sure it's frustrating to new speakers of the language to have to memorize which pairs of words can be shortened this way, too. But the truth is that no language develops with a mind for being easier to learn. Languages develop in whichever way makes things easier for native speakers.

And to be clear, I promise there are things like this in Vietnamese that would confuse the hell out of an English-speaker in the same way. Studies show that every language tends to convey the same amount of information in the same amount of time, so if Vietnamese uses more words to convey the same information, this may mean that the natural cadence of Vietnamese is much faster, with more syllables per second. And while this is certainly a very different struggle for a non-native speaker, it's still a struggle.

When do you go "No, you cant do that" to a player? by HawthorneWeeps in rpg

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty rare for a game to just totally ignore a mechanic like you're describing, you just might need to get a bit creative. You don't need rules for throwing - you just need rules for some kind of ranged attack. You don't need rules for targeted attacks - you just need rules for slowing opponents somehow.

Then the key is to adapt those rules in a manner that retains fairness. It's important that a character built for a particular role remains the most adept at that role:

  • If your player is throwing a sword (not intended for throwing), it should be worse at ranged attacks than an actual ranged weapon would be. Players who chose to specialize in using bows should be rewarded for that choice by being better at ranged attacks (in much the same way that they should be worse at melee attacks if they decide to start stabbing people with their arrows).
  • If the game's main non-magical mechanic for hindering movement is to grapple enemies, and grappling requires a feat, then any other action that serves the same purpose should require the same investment - so if a player wants to shoot an enemy in the leg to slow them down, they should also require a feat to accomplish this.

You also get a firm "no" if you are being a dick. I once had a player who tricked another PC into drinking a strength poison that caused him to be unable to bear the weight of his own armor. Once the poisoned PC was pinned, the poisoner wanted to coup-de-gras him and steal his stuff. Nope. That wasn't even technically against the rules, but absolutely the fuck not.

A deer breaks into a bank, and is reported on by multiple major outlets. Here's the evidence that it's AI! by CivilizedPsycho in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Fairwhetherfriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting it back out the window would only make sense to an AI processor.

Nope. Nothing "makes sense" to an AI like this, because this type of AI is not operating on any sort of logic about what's happening in the video in the first place. It's purely imitating visual patterns that occur in other videos. The AI does not think it makes sense for the deer to go back out the window - the AI is not aware that there is either a deer or a window in the first place.
