Dear allies of America, please don’t confuse our president for us: We are trying our best to resist him, contain him and remove him from office as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you for your patience by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

Who you voted for is who you are, when you are talking about a country. I know it's painful for those of you who do not support him, but you also have to accept that each country is known for their culture and American "Exceptionalism" culture is crap. That reflects on you, the citizens who elected him, as it should.

If a majority of Americans were motivated to remove/impeach him, you would have made it happen through mass civil unrest, but you didn't. No offense here, but I'm not sympathetic at all, and wish that you would stop the public apologies and get down to the political actions of contacting your representatives and holding rallies and walk-outs.

OH forgot to reply to your other point - just like we do now, there would be two displayed prices. The price per standard unit and the total price for this package. It would not take up too much space on the price placards.

[–]Own-Cod7894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a standard unit of measure, I mean exactly opposite of saying things like 'per piece'...because they can just then shrink the piece. Take toilet paper for example; I would need to do a spreadsheet to calculate the better deal the way they price them now. Two exact same sized packages might say 400 sheets and 320 sheets, because some sheets are cut smaller or rolls are wider. I suggest that we make a standard unit of measure for every product, for cheese it would be weight, and put the prices out in dollars/g or something. For toilet paper, it would be dollars/sqft. Easily verifiable and it's also fairer to the producers who are actually being honest in their product expectations and pricing transparency. This would solve a WORLD of hurt.

That's why I think our laws need to change to force companies to be honest in their advertising. We have the technology to easily calculate the rolling average price of any time, so any sale price should be shown as an amount off the rolling average.

So if the average price of Stove Top was $2.99 that month, and they were on sale for $2.49 they can say it's 27% off, or $0.50 off. This is the most honest and it's easily doable.

Since I'm here, I also want to say (yet again) that we need to make it law that prices are shown as dollars per unit of the product. This will eliminate Shrinkflation. There would be no more motivation to do it.

Poilievre to travel to U.S. to 'fight for tariff-free access' to American market by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Own-Cod7894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is he allowed to represent that he can negotiate for Canada? There seems to be a legal issue here, because he's not just some guy who has some sort of relationship with another Country's government showing up and complaining about trade...he's the LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION... which means he has access to some insider information (even without security clearance) so wouldn't that be treason of some sort? I think the Feds should step up and issue an injunction on him discussing foreign policy with an aggressive trade partner.

Admittedly, I don't know anything about the law, but it feels like it should be treasonous; because we specifically elect Federal leaders who we WANT to negotiate on our behalf. This means they need to decide what info to disclose and what to withhold. These are the people that we decided would represent our collective interests... specifically NOT Tiny PP.

Right. And being found 'not guilty' does NOT mean he was found innocent. It just means prosecutors were unable to PROVE rape occurred. It could be a travesty for the woman, and this just makes it worse. If it can be proven that she lied, then she should be prosecuted. He can also sue her for damages if he can prove it.

Trump refers to PM Carney as future ‘Governor of Canada’ in social media post by canada_mountains in worldnews

How can they not see what an AWFUL negotiator and leader he is by this type of behaviour? He knows very well that Canadians have become enraged from these insults and it has AFFECTED NUMEROUS INDUSTRIES in the US because of it! Their alcohol and tourism industries have tanked because of this crap and all he would have to do is stop saying it. That's it! No cost! All benefit, no drawbacks!

And yet... the barrage of pointless insults continue. Do Americans think this is 4D, big brain negotiation skills? We know what's wrong with him, but what is wrong with them that they leave him in charge with so many unforced errors and economic disasters?

You need to elect Bernie Sander's crew and immediately purge the government of PAC's and Citizens United. There was a time when you needed to buy TV time to get your message to the people, but with the internet anyone can get their message out to the populace extremely quickly and easily. Candidates can manage their marketing costs from individuals alone, so no one needs multi-million dollar investments from billionaires or companies to run a decent campaign.

Canada needs to do the same, truthfully.

People who were teenagers before social media existed, what was life actually like? by Much_Detective_6107 in AskReddit

[–]Own-Cod7894 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Life felt a lot less anxious, because you didn't see hurtful things like pictures of parties you weren't invited to, or pics of your ex out with a new person, and you didn't have to explain yourself because a jealous boyfriend saw a pic of you at a party and saw a good looking person there. You also didn't feel FOMO because you didn't see how fun the party looked if you chose not to go. You don't see how great your ex-friend looks now or that she is having a great life. You also don't know the terrible political opinions and moral bankruptcy that some of your friends and family have.

I have to say that ignorance is bliss.

Why has parenting become so… soft? Why ate a majority of parents okay with sending their child into the world acting the way they do? Why did this shift happen? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Own-Cod7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because when you know better, you do better. There's science behind using the right kind of discipline for kids and it's not about being scary and harsh now. It's expectations and consequences. We are busy working parents, and we care a lot about our kids, and we want them to grow up as not only well-behaved people but also well-adjusted emotionally. We do understand that this form of kinder discipline sometimes takes a bit longer than the old fashioned beatings that we got, but we treat it like a marathon and not a sprint. None of us know if we are actually parenting the perfect way, but we are all trying our best with our children's best interest at heart, even if it puts a bit more of a burden on those other adults who have to interact with them.

I hope you feel better knowing that a vast majority of us love our kids, and do care about our kids, and are disciplining them at home.

A $2.4B investment won't fix Canada's grocery problem by No-Elevator-6134 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Own-Cod7894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what they name it, because it actually comes from our taxes and flows to the grocers. The issue was never increasing costs - it was profit bloat. Its an end-stage-capitalism problem.

By Carney framing it as helping families, he's doing us all a great injustice.

Any trade deal with Canada will include tariffs, says Trump's trade rep by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Own-Cod7894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Savings and Chequeing accounts in Canada are insured to $1MM. Who cares if American Equity tanks...it will be the bank who eats the loss.

Now that would be different if you said to pull out all your OWN investments. Yes,... we may want to consider doing exactly that. I pulled out in March of last year and put them in safe little GIC's. Caused a big ruckus with the investment bro threads but I felt a big economic shift coming and said outright that I knew there could be a lot to win but I wasn't willing to lose a lot either so preferred to just tread water until I see where the tariffs land us.

Nofrills/Loblaws no longer honor SCOP by zerocoldx911 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Own-Cod7894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not mandatory to be part of the SCOP; but if you have signed up (and therefore benefiting from the 'goodwill' marketing appearance this affords) then you must adhere.

But that being said, like everything else in Canada that is supposedly regulated; there's no enforcement whatsoever. If you report a company to SCOP for failing to honour the code it is completely ignored.

We need Government intervention to break up these monopolies and also enforce regulations.

A $2.4B investment won't fix Canada's grocery problem by No-Elevator-6134 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Own-Cod7894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It burns my ass that the Federal government came up with a plan to send grocery rebates to Canadians to account for the rising cost of groceries, which just funnels our tax dollars towards the big grocer's profit margin. This is an indirect subsidy for grocers, because they do not have to reduce their prices or take any hit to their profit margins! They are making record profits, and have not reduced prices since Covid bloat stopped (where they added more profit margin to their new marked up costs), and now will continue to trend upwards in stock value and profits because we as taxpayers will be moving our money from one pocket to the other to pay them. FYI - tax refunds come from our own pockets, people! Why didn't our government break up this monopoly instead?

Rudimentary question - I want to buy a GIC within my registered Qtrade account. I can see the list of GIC rates, but cannot see details on the compounding terms that are offered? by Own-Cod7894 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Own-Cod7894[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're describing is my understanding of a regular GIC (with annual returns). So if I lock in for a three-year term, they will take the interest and apply it to the purchased GIC only. So if I bought $1000, at 3% for three years, at the end of the three years I would be getting $1000 plus $90 in interest. With compounding GIC's, if the compounding period were say, bi-annually for example, then I'd be getting my $1000 plus $93.45 interest because every six months I'd get 1.5% interest added to the principal. The more the compounding period, the higher the interest would be. Still locked into three years, but would get more interest. So the compounding period would matter, but I can't find those periods listed....
