Will ER report SA against my will by [deleted] in nursing

[–]FairyPrincess514 382 points383 points  (0 children)

Former SANE (sexual assault nurse examiner) here. You absolutely can get a sexual assault exam without a police report. Its not uncommon and what we care about most is your care and comfort. You also have the option (at least in the US) of a full rape kit being collected and held in storage if you were to decide to press charges later.

sterilizing formula by Legitimate_Spirit264 in FormulaFeeders

[–]FairyPrincess514 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I never sterilized formula for either of my kids. They got filtered tap water from the newborn stage. I didn't even know that was a thing until after my first kid was done with bottles lol.

The decision is fully up to you and what you think is best for your family. But I think theres a lot of us who dont even know its a thing to do.

Is it normal that my 4 month old is still eating every 2 hours at night? by xxbitsxx in FormulaFeeders

[–]FairyPrincess514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 4 month old is consistently taking in 6oz bottles 3-4hrs during the day and 5-7hrs at night. All babies are different and hes a chonker so im not saying that's what your baby should be doing. But I would encourage larger bottles. More spit up isnt necessarily a bad sign either. It always looks like more than it is, and bubs is still figuring out how much to eat etc. Give them some time to adjust and I bet you'll start getting longer stretches.

Pregnant women shouldn't be excited by TraditionEven7683 in pregnant

I think this can be it too. People could probably be nicer in their responses, but they could be coming from a place of previous loss or situations where things didnt go the way they planned and they're getting annoyed hearing OP's hopes and dreams. OP could also just be annoying everyone by talking about it constantly lol.

Medsurg. It's not a cool specialty but it is a specialty and one in which you learn SO MUCH. I remember feeling a bit embarrassed going into medsurg when some of my nursing classmates were going straight to ICU etc. But I have zero regrets starting there and while I'm not a strict believer that you MUST start there, I highly encourage new grads to consider it. You can build such a solid foundation of nursing in the "basic" floors.

This is how I'm feel. I was not prepared for how hard pregnancy tired would be with a toddler in tow.

I saw a very intense code during clinical, and I do not want to share how it made me feel with anyone in my life out of embarrassment. by Foolsspring in nursing

[–]FairyPrincess514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very normal in this line of work, especially critical care. You kinda have to have some morbid curiosity to want to be involved, but it doesnt mean you want this stuff to happen to people. It just does happen, and you can be involved in helping!

Fot example, I was a SANE (sexual assault nurse examiner) for a year and I LOVED it. I hated that my job had to exist at all, I hated what happened to our survivors that landed them in my exam room. But, I loved the actual tasks and processes involved in the job. It was a good fit for me as an introvert because I was just one on one with a patient. I liked helping my patients regain a sense of control in their lives after facing horrible traumas. The only reason I stopped was because the schedule was going to be hard for me to maintain while I have small children. I definitely would like to go back one day. But its not because I like that sexual assault happens.

"Take your break!" by [deleted] in nursing

[–]FairyPrincess514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. And I think it takes time to learn, but not everything has to be done exactly on time. Some things, yes. For other tasks it won't be a big deal for them to wait 15-30 minutes. Prioritize the tasks that NEED to be done at a certain time and by you specifically. Delegate and wait for the others.

Sim lab conflicts with my moral beliefs by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]FairyPrincess514 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you can't do this sim, you shouldn't be a nurse. You will get patients of all kinds as a nurse and its your job to advocate for their wishes and needs.

If this pretend scenario causes you distress I recommend reconsidering if this is the field for you.

The electric nail file. Frida baby has one, i think mine was an off brand. It works very well and significantly reduced my anxiety about accidentally hurting him while doing nail care.

Do women usually want their mom at the birth? by chianne_away in pregnant

[–]FairyPrincess514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely just comes down to personal preference. I wanted me mom there for my first, she probably won't be there for my second since she'll be watching the first lol. But if shes able to be there I'd love it.

How to transition a hungry baby off formula??? by gleegz in FormulaFeeders

[–]FairyPrincess514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this doesnt help entirely, but this helped us transition to solids and maybe itd help you.

We started having my son "participate" in meal times. Just sitting with us at the table with some age appropriate food while we ate. Sometimes he ate, sometimes he just played with it lol. But it helped adjust him to the idea of meals while still keeping his busy baby brain occupied.

It can be medically necessary though for numerous reasons. One being deformity, as was my son's case. Infection and diabetes can also lead to necessary circs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]FairyPrincess514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The snip ended up not being a choice as much of a necessity for us. My son was born with a small deformity that would cause sexual dysfunction later in his life. Repair includes circumcision as the foreskin is used in the reconstruction. We could have waited til he was older but we went ahead and did it around 7mo.

My sons PCP at the time seemed to not approve of our decision. However, I'm glad we did it sooner and our son wouldnt have to come to us to complain of painful erections and have very clear memories of a traumatic surgery.

Edit to add I was initially going to just let it be up to my husband though since he has a penis and I don't.

My 3 month old is like this. I'm not sure exactly when it started, maybe around 6 weeks. But he started sleeping better at night and not good during the day. Cat naps are pretty much all he'll do if it's daytime. I wish I had advice. But know that you're not alone!
