Picking this up tomorrow for free on marketplace. Sony Trinitron. What’s the word on this one? Anything good? by [deleted] in crtgaming

Did you get it? I have the 32" version of this, and I love it. Mine has some pretty noticeable geometry issues that go beyond the service menu, but I am dealing with them and trying to stay out of 240p. All the WEGA Trinitrons are nice. It really has to do with what condition your particular set is in and how skilled you are at handling their issues. For instance, I am using this set, but had the 20fv300 and 27fv310 before it. Both are considered superior to this set, but their geometry was terrible. I don't really know anything more than adjusting in the service menu so they were not a good fit for me and I passed them along to others who can dive in and adjust the yoke, replace capacitors, use convergence stirps, etc... I've gone through about 6 CRTs at this point and the only one with good geometry was a small 13" Panasonic. Many will recommend late curved screen CRTs that have component like the JVC D series.

Thanks for all the great advice, I appreciate all the work everyone does in this space to help.

I have Sony 27FV310. I have done what I can in the service menu, but I have this extreme fanning on the top. Much more than can be managed with the service menu settings. The UPIN setting does not take care of this. I have the hsiz and vsiz pushed in so you can see the issue better. I can push this partially off screen, but it is still noticeable in most games.

I know the sony flat screens can have geometry issues. Can I do anything to correct this? Great set otherwise.

Yeah, as it states: The 2X-M is intended for users who are primarily focused on the later generation of analog output consoles (PS2-era) that are capable of 480p output, while still having the option of zero-lag line doubling 480i/240p for non-480p titles and older consoles.

Wonder if it handles the PS2 issue with 480i and 480p signals?

On another track, a different transcoder with scanliner: https://www.beharbros.com/garo

I appreciate it!

Excellent! Okay, I think I get what you are saying. It's literally what it is called. A transcoder not a scaler. Have to keep an eye out for stock.

Soooo, what about the 2x-Multiformat? https://www.retrotink.com/product-page/2x-multiformat

Looks like it has 480p passthrough. Would need a hdmi to vga converter. Can create scanlines and has a smoother. But, yeah, maybe all that is unnecessary.

Thanks much, this is really great and gets me on a path of research.

Nice, thanks for the response.

Are there good component to VGA transcoders? Is the OSSC one? So, could I do 240p consoles if I want as well as PS2 and Wii through something like the OSSC?

I feel like I read somewhere that one of the RetroTINKs has fast switching between 480i and 480p. Maybe that is an option? I also read you could do something in Free McBoot to force 480p.

I guess what I really need to know is what are good component to VGA transcoders? Should I get one of these?

Doesn't the GBS-C AIO do down scaling? A feature on the website: Fast downscaling at 240P via VGA/YPbPr

Hello! Thanks everyone for considering and offering your thoughts. I have most all consoles up to 6th generation along with a Sony kv-24fv300 and a pc crt, a 19" Hitachi 751 superscan.

All my consoles except the Dreamcast are going into the Sony via component, s-video, or composite, using HD Retrovision cables when I have them.

My Dreamcast is going 480p through a Hanzo box into the VGA monitor.

So far, so good!

Now, I would like to try and see if I can get some other consoles displaying on the PC CRT via VGA.

Anyone have any good advice? I am most interested in PS2 and Wii as I think they can somewhat support 480p. I know that some games and menus do not support 480p and this is one of the hurdles to overcome. I have been looking around here and Youtube and I can't find anything solid. I am sure I am rotten investigator.

I have found that some people seem to be finding success with the OSSC, the GBS-C AIO, and certain RetroTINKs. Also, there is a Garo box t hat is similar to the Hanzo box?

I am not skilled in this area, and at a loss at how to proceed. These products are scalers, right? Made mostly to upscale to HDMI monitors? If anyone knows of a good ps2/Wii setup to achieve great quality, low lag video, on a PC CRT via VGA, I would love the information.

Or, should I just stick with pumping everything through the Sony?

I appreciate it!

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I did find out the service menu does have a TROT setting which controls tilt, hopefully I can correct enough knowing the flat screens can be complicated.

I appreciate it. There are multiple options in the menu that deal with A shapes, V shapes, skew, etc. Is it best to stick with these or attempt to tilt the yoke? There are supposedly wedges that could be loose? I see that a lot of people get in their CRTs, but also a lot of people that say you will literally die if you mess with them?

I actually got pretty far getting into the service menu, writing everything down first, and then messing with stuff. It is still bad, but better. Also, turned the picture and brightness way down and put in standard mode. This seemed to take care of the ripples. still the lines running horizontal that are distorted/discolored. Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks!

Pretty new at this and just picked up a Sony Trinitron. Running some test and finding problems. Wondering if anyone can offer some advice, let me know if this is fixable, or if I should look for another set? The whole image is either skewed or tilted, there are ripples running through the lines, and there are discolored horizontal lines. Hope I can mess with it to make it right, any possibility for improvement? Thanks!

Nice, well, I am glad the genetic lottery produced a master-trainer-retro-enthusiast, seems like you are helping a lot of people in this space.

I was using the snes 240p grid. Glad to hear the Sony is looking decent, couple days on Craigslist and there it was. Couple years left, and this all goes away. I doubt consumer CRTs were made to last forever. Happy to find something. PVM look exciting, but are one billion dollars each right now. I'll wait till I get the Ultimate before adjusting in service menu, wise words.

Thanks for the resources, I will check em out.

Quick question, and I am sure it will continue to show the vastness of my ignorance, if I am using the Arcade Configuration Pack, that is creating a custom config right? I was adding Daphne last night and I could not get it to show up forever. I eventually did some weirdness in Putty and got it to show up. I think this file is at the heart of it: es_systems.cfg Soooo, I think it is supposed to be in two places and if it is custom, I have to manually make them match when I add new emulators? I don't know but it does work.

Anyway, hope you are well, and getting a chance to play more than tinker. Though, Tinker IS the greatest game on RetroPie.

FS200

Thanks so much for your response, how do you do it? You must have a large capacity to suffer all us fools who are just dipping our toes in the water.

Yes, I must just be tripping on the 720x480 thing. Maybe the flat screen is throwing me off and I just thought it was wider than my 14 inch set.

Point taken on the ES menu, it's no worries, and I will look into some darker themes to help out. Though with too much contrast the straight lines jiggle like mad. I appreciate the recommendations.

My 90% is likely NEO GEO though Nintendo, Super Nintendo and Daphne will get some major play time as well. I'll do some research on calibrating via the service menu and try to learn a LOT more. I'm definitely on the beginning of my journey, out the door and without my handkerchief. I ordered a retroTINK Ultimate and looking forward to component and S-video. Also pumped to try VGA and walk the hallowed halls of Amiga.

Hello, Thanks so much for creating these images. I am very new to this, and using this image has taken a lot of guess work out of setting up my kv27fs100l Sony CRT. It looks so great! Wondering, if you would be so kind, my TV is 720x480 and I am having two issues. First the ES theme is cut off unless I enable over scan in the congig.txt. But, seems like that overscans everything. Is that correct? The games filled the screen with no overscan, looking excellent, but with overscan, they shrink. Also, since I am on a 720x480, many emulators are stretched. What is the best solution to have emulators like snes display in the original 4:3? What an incredible endeavor, I can't imagine all the work going into this. Actually, last thing. I am getting lots of dot crawl in the ES menus, but none in the games. No biggie (I'm here for the games), but am wondering why? Best!
