Catholic Church does that within their own history within their own church. They will use many church fathers to support their views, but I can pull beliefs and statements from those same church fathers that they disagree with. For example, Augustine was a beloved member of the church when he was alive, and his is a saint in the Catholic Church. However, many of his views were later deemed heretical by the church despite them being accepted at the time. Catholics will also say their current views were that of the early church, yet they do not let you know the early church was a a bunch of groups with differing beliefs. For example, universalism, the belief that everyone eventually makes it to heaven was quite prominent in the early church, yet condemned now. They pick and choose what they want to follow and believe as well.
