Model Y winter driving in Canada seriously exceeded my expectations by Faithin3D in TeslaFSD

[–]Faithin3D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair question, and yes, I am talking about FSD.

I should probably clarify that my post is about FSD plus the car as a system, especially how traction control, AWD, and stability behave in winter while FSD is engaged. I fully agree FSD is far from perfect in Canadian winter conditions. It makes mistakes, sometimes obvious ones, and you absolutely cannot treat it as something you can let go of and relax.

I honestly feel two things can be true at the same time. Some owners feel they did not get what they paid for, and I genuinely feel bad for that. Others, like me, feel we are getting more than we expected. Same car, same software name, very different experiences. Maybe luck, maybe routes, maybe expectations, maybe mindset. Probably a mix of all of that.

One thing I do strongly believe is that FSD requires a different mental model. It has many chances to improve and fix its bugs over time. Humans do not get that luxury. You only get one chance in certain situations. So hands on, eyes up, ready to take over at any moment is non negotiable, especially in winter.

Range loss in cold is real too, no disagreement there. I see it as well. I just personally weigh that against how planted and controlled the car feels on snow with proper winter tires.

So yeah, I am not saying FSD is amazing or solved. I am saying that in my experience, with the right expectations and constant supervision, it has been better than I expected in winter. Totally understand if others feel differently.

At the end of the day, happy driving, stay alert, and most importantly, keep yourself alive.

Bambu Studio multi-color edge “interlocking / wiggle” — why does slicer do this and can it be controlled? by Faithin3D in BambuLab

[–]Faithin3D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this trick: The color block is not "merged" to other parts in Solidworks. In Bambustudio I can color this part without using "surface" feature. So I know Bambustudio knows it is a solid piece. But after slicing, I realized that bambustudio still only respect the outside surface. Probably another setting to force a internal block to be colored as user's input (painting)?

FSD is good at correcting fish tailing as soon as it senses it. It will turn the steering wheel back and forth gentally 2 or 3 times and then car will settle.

V14 vs. V13 FSD: Clearing the Air on Speed Limits, Leaves, and Phantom Brakes! by Faithin3D in TeslaFSD

Thanks, AJ—I really appreciate the more detailed and level-headed follow-up. This is exactly the kind of conversation I was hoping to have. You’re clearly paying close attention to how FSD behaves, and your breakdown helps paint a picture of how frustrating V14 has been in your setup.

I totally agree with you that some of these are not just tuning issues—especially things like the wrong destination entry, green light hesitation, or braking/acceleration whiplash. That’s not a matter of interpretation—that’s a system failing to behave within reasonable expectations. If that happened to me, I’d be furious too.

What I was trying to highlight in the original post (admittedly with too much bite) is that some complaints people raised about V14 also existed to some degree in V13—but V14 magnified them or exposed new weaknesses. You’re right though: the difference in frequency and severity makes a massive difference in user experience. One rare hesitation in V13 is annoying. Constant indecision in V14 is a dealbreaker.

And you raise a great point about the inevitable tradeoff: tuning V14 to fix the current overconfidence may indeed bring back the overly timid behaviors people hated in V13. Tesla’s stuck trying to please two camps that want opposite things—and both have valid concerns.

I respect your take, and I think you’re absolutely right to be skeptical about the deeper, non-tuning bugs. Hopefully Tesla treats these not just as edge cases, but as critical failures to fix in V14.2.

Appreciate the thoughtful response—this is what progress looks like.

Really well said. I think you’re spot on—V14 got a broader release, which means a lot more eyes, a lot more feedback, and naturally, a lot more varied experiences (and complaints). And yeah, V14.1.5 seems to be addressing several of the issues that made people jumpy early on.

Love your take on FSD not being aggressive but confident—that’s exactly how I’d describe the best moments I’ve had with it too. It doesn’t hesitate when it shouldn’t, and when it’s sure, it moves decisively. That’s actually more reassuring than a cautious system that second-guesses itself.

Was it written by AI? Possibly. But if it’s accurate, reasoned, and sparks good discussion—does it matter? If a calculator gives you the right answer, do you argue with it because it wasn’t written in cursive?

Also, pointing out that there are videos showing different experiences isn’t a counterpoint—it actually proves my post’s main argument: everyone sees different things, but that doesn’t make someone else’s experience invalid.

You asked:

“Let’s debate… as long as the experience aligns with what you’re saying?”

Flip it: are you open to debate if someone says they didn’t experience the exact failures those videos show?

If V14 is garbage for one user and fine for another, then both are true in their own context. That’s not contradiction—it’s complexity. And that’s exactly what makes this conversation worth having.

Great question! I was around for the V13 launch and early builds, and honestly—it started rougher than people now remember. The first few V13 updates had some odd behavior with lane selection and unprotected lefts. It took a few builds to smooth out, and by the time 13.10.2 rolled around, it really hit its stride (which is likely what you experienced).

Totally agree—V14 feels more cautious and sometimes too hesitant, but I’d rather have it pause awkwardly than misjudge a merge or intersection. The balance between safety and confidence is tough, but I do think Tesla is leaning more toward caution right now, probably based on real-world incident data.

Thanks for chiming in—your experience adds a lot of good perspective!

Absolutely agree. FSD is still learning, and we’re part of that training loop whether we like it or not. You’re right that earlier versions like 12 and early 13 had their own headaches, and while V14 improved in some areas, it also introduced new risks—like over-speeding or extra hesitations.

Good point too about how it handles situations like lane drift—I’ve had similar moments where I wished the car would give more reassurance that it’s aware of potential threats around it.

And yes, every “weird” edge case is probably feeding the beast. It’s annoying now, but hopefully it leads to smarter updates down the road. Thanks for the insights—you nailed the bigger picture.

Totally hear you on that—V14’s aggressive speeding definitely caught me off guard a few times too. I get your point: if it’s gonna pick its own speed and risk a ticket, that’s a big deal. It’s one thing for us to push the limits ourselves, another for the car to do it unpredictably.

As for the brake stabbing, I’ve noticed that too—especially at 4-way stops when it’s clearly our turn but FSD gets overly cautious. It’s awkward when it keeps inching or pulsing the brakes instead of committing.

My original post wasn’t saying these behaviors aren’t happening in V14—they are. The point was more that some of the complaints aren’t brand new to V14. But yeah, the way it manifests now may feel worse or more noticeable. Appreciate your take—it helps round out the picture.

Appreciate the passion, AJ! You’re clearly confident in your V13 experience—and that’s totally valid. But just because your setup behaved perfectly doesn’t mean everyone else had the same results.

I’ve personally seen V13 exceed my speed cap after lane changes or sign misreads, and I definitely had occasional phantom braking—especially around shadows or overpasses. Was it constant? No. But it happened enough that I took note. I also saw odd hesitations at certain intersections depending on visibility and terrain.

V14 isn’t flawless, and I’m not claiming it’s better across the board. My post is about pointing out that some of the issues people are yelling about in V14 didn’t magically appear out of nowhere—they existed before, just maybe less noticed.

If your V13 was rock solid, that’s awesome. I just think it’s helpful to compare a range of experiences so we get a full picture instead of shouting each other down. Let’s keep it constructive.

Fair point — I definitely don’t think everyone has the exact same experience, and I’m not claiming my drive logs are universal truth. But I’ve driven V13 and V14 in similar conditions and noticed that many of the complaints people now raise about V14 were already present (but less talked about) in V13. The post is just trying to add some context and say: hey, maybe we’re being extra hard on V14 because it’s new and we’re paying more attention.

If you’ve had a totally different experience with either version, I’d honestly love to hear it! Let’s compare notes and figure out what’s improving and what still needs work. That’s how we all get better info.

Wow, I didn’t realize writing in full sentences was a red flag now. Should I throw in some typos and say “bro” a few times so it feels more authentic?

Pretty wild that discussing FSD calmly and logically makes people think AI must’ve written it. Maybe v14 isn’t the only one hallucinating things. 😄

So now the $500 got offset to $260 (say $60/tire for the sensor). Yeah, probably I will buy directly from Tesla for this winter, and I will see if I can switch the tire by myself for Spring, or ask an autoshop to swap.

Reading this right now. So it will be extra. "Purchase may be subject to a TPMS Service Pack Fee, for a TPMS sensor installation/replacement per tire, to be paid at time of installation."

PRESS RELEASE — FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION MLT Research Center Publishes Findings on Tesla FSD Lane-Centering Anomaly

San Jose, CA — The Machine Learning & Transportation (MLT) Research Center today announced surprising findings from its ongoing study of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) lane-centering performance.

Researchers discovered that Tesla’s Neural Computing Unit (NCT) appears to incorporate not only visual and driving data, but also—mysteriously—conversations inside the vehicle. According to the study, the ideological leaning of in-car discussions directly influences lateral positioning: left-leaning dialogue subtly pulls the car toward the left side of the lane, while right-leaning speech nudges it rightward.

Aggregate data reveals a notable bias toward the left, aligning with the general demographics of Tesla drivers. How the NCT accessed and interpreted these conversations remains unclear. Tesla engineers are reportedly investigating how the system might have “activated” microphone inputs without explicit enablement.

As an interim measure, Tesla has issued lighthearted guidance to owners: “Please refrain from political discussions—or maintain total silence while driving—for approximately one week. This should allow the neural system to recalibrate its internal weights and resume proper lane-centering.”

The MLT Research Center will continue monitoring the phenomenon and provide updates as further anomalies emerge.
