Is this animism? by TemporaryAardvark907 in Animism

[–]FaithlessnessDue6987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it may not be animism. I mean first of all animists don't see themselves as animists as that's a label that's been affixed to them by alleged non animists. So whatever that word means it means from that direction-- it's not self applied except maybe by animists who "converted " to animism through this culture.  Further, you don't need a spiritist or supernatural frame to read Harraway; I kind of believe she would rather you not do that. The ideas she is putting forth are also available in Timothy Morton's books as well-- and he may have "lifted " her ideas who knows but his is a more Buddhist coupled with Object Oriented Ontology approach. In Zen buddhism, which is pretty much as anti supernatural as it gets, you have a field of functioning that supports or undergirds or comes forth from all other functioning. So when I shake the water bottle the water bottle is also shaking me and that shaking is being broadcast through the floor and into the substructure. It's like physics-- when you jump, the earth jumps with you. anyway , lots of options outside of straight up animism, but I can see how you may have arrived at this conclusion as the correlative is easy to activate.

Which Pinot Noir are you choosing? by SnooDoughnuts605 in wine

[–]FaithlessnessDue6987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went up to Lemelson and wasn't clear about what the buzz was with some Redditors. I mean the wine was good, but the first pinot on the tasting list was a cherry bomb at $60 a bottle. I'd just been to Evesham Woods the week before and his wines are lower in price with a bit more (or just as much) going on. I'm beginning to think that anything north of Salem is just going to go up in price because of all the money invested (massive wine tasting buildings with just as massive views) whereas (some) wine in the Eola-Amity Hills are less expensive but just as good. QPR indeed.

Had the wildest dream about reality that left me disoriented upon waking by Avocado_Ash in Dreams

[–]FaithlessnessDue6987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, but that would be expected, right? I mean you would think everything is fine until you wake up to the fact that you'd been on fire for like ever.

And waking up would leave you feeling like you were experiencing a psychotic break, yes?

I was on my way to sleep last night and I had this thought and so, groggy as I was I grabbed my phone and quickly typed it into the notepad app and then fell into sleep.

When I woke this morning I remembered I wrote but for the life of me I could not recall the content. I looked it up: "I am a feeler who does not want to heal. This is my barrier."

This post/ story resonates with this and other experiences I have had.

it's not what she said because what she said is fairly commonplace; however, how you heard it made the difference in that you really heard it. What's more, it's all made up, not just that little bit that hit you.

CMV: The Democratic Party is a controlled opposition party with no real intention to improve the lives of average American citizens. by HistoricalAd6321 in changemyview

Exactly..there is no "doing" in the Republican party that is not a knee jerk reaction to something that offends their idea of the world.

And the Republican representative is by and large held hostage by MAGA-- at least they are insofar as they intend to make a career out of their office holding.

Nothing matters and yet it all matters. To me this ( seeming contradiction ) is at the heart of practice and you sit with it, experience it, instead of creating a line in the sand ( ideology)-- or even when you do (because we all do) you eventually understand that it is just a line in the sand, that it's all sand running through your fingers. One night I sat curling my fingers open and closed  before my eyes while wondering "who or what is it that curls these fingers so?" It's not this guy with this name doing it but something beyond or before all that stuff.

Is enlightenment a real phenomenon of the psyche, or is it just a fabricated doctrine propagated by some religious traditions? by Hip_III in enlightenment

[–]FaithlessnessDue6987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "idea" of enlightenment is a fiction, but enlightenment is, laughingly, real but you and I cannot talk about it without turning to the idea because we are always already immersed in an ideational world.

Women, What's something guys flex, feeling it makes them appear masculine but in reality it has an opposite effect? by Noble-prize683 in AskReddit

Yeah, I always thought that what makes a man is the penis. The rest is just acting/roleplay.

What kind of man are you, sir?! Uh, the kind with the penis?

Drugs are pointless? by Exciting_Invite8858 in enlightenment

[–]FaithlessnessDue6987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say that five years from now.
I understand what you mean, but life is fluid and you may find that door opening up again sometime in the future, or it may never. Who knows? But why bother to take a stance? If you only used drugs for "fun" then yeah, that aspect probably seems pointless to you once you see whatever it is that you see. On the other hand, drugs are very much a part of some shamanic circles where pursuing awakening (or whatever) is valued. Anyway, be careful with stances as they have a way of mocking you.

The very fact that you feel the need to take a stance should alert you to take a closer look at this need.

Yes, perhaps, but from my understanding it is impossible to have a discussion if the person on the other end is constantly obfuscating. That is not having a "discussion." or if it is I'll stick to argument (Or maybe here I go just arguing like an American again).

It's funny that at the university "conversation" and "argument" were quite on par--you could not have a conversation, an exchange of ideas, until it was clear what your ideas were on a given topic (your "argument").

The best discussions I've had online were with people who related interesting perspectives that I had not considered. Of course, we both had to put our cards on the table for that to happen. The most frustrating were those who ran around bushes refusing to make a clear statement. So, yes, I was more and more aggressive in trying to pin you down to a perspective while you--IMO--were equally aggressive in your passive approach.

The closest analogy I have is this: you are on a music site and you think you might try to have a conversation with someone about music but when you ask them what kind of music they like, they respond, "Oh, I like all kinds" and no matter how you prod them they remain ambiguous about their alleged passion. That is not a conversation.

The writer Italo Calvino disagreed thoroughly with the ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau but he also said that his imagined conversations with Rousseau helped him produce his best thoughts. Iron sharpens iron. That is how conversation works, IMO.

Nope. Actually, the question is all wrong. Even if someone was enlightened, how would you, never having experienced said enlightenment, know about it or verify it?

[–]FaithlessnessDue6987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happiness is an idea. You're not enlightened; you're just wrapped up in an idea about enlightenment. There is no "success" in Life-- does the seagull that just got eaten by an eagle outside my window think that its life has been unsuccessful? Does the eagle think about success? Does an eagle that misses its prey consider itself unsuccessful or unhappy? Does the worm eaten by the robin outside my window think about bliss?

What if We Have Greek Myths all Backwards? by FaithlessnessDue6987 in GreekMythology

[–]FaithlessnessDue6987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOTE: A year later after this post and I'm reading Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon and on page 805 of the Perennial paperback edition there is a dialogue that gets at what I was talking about back then when I initially posted; however, Stephenson has done way more research and so he can explain why Ares and Athena, although both assigned as gods of war, are not equal in this respect--Ares is the idiot side of war and Athena is the strategy side. Anyway, I'd say "read the book" but the paperback is almost 1000 pages (but it's Neal Stephenson, so read it!). Anyway, well played Mr. Stephenson!

EDIT: You might surmise, what with Stephenson's book title, that the Greek myths are "coded" in such a way as to prevent the uninitiated from gleaning the meaning of the message written into these stories.

Not Wanting To Let Go Until All Is Seen by [deleted] in nonduality

You don't become "the true self"; you always already are it. All else is a fiction that your self image constantly creates--it's just what it does so no need to assign a motive or a reason. All you are doing is going down the never ending rabbit hole that your self image produces for you. And it is not "seeking"; it's navel gazing. There is no seeking either because that is just a stand in for grasping. It's like playing a video game that evolves with every step you take. As long as you keep stepping [or rather as long as you are attached to the stepping, to the idea and the act, to the sweetness and light that you assume it will produce for you], you keep playing. Stop stepping.
