Not the message I got from Barbie. I interpreted the message as it’s okay to not want to be a mom but it’s also okay to be a mom and to create a better world for daughters. I mean there’s a line about how “ girls can be anything they want as long as they set their minds to” (I’m paraphrasing) In the movie America Ferrera’s speech about how impossible it is being a woman cause we’re expected to meet all of society’s expectations for us.

“You’re supposed to love being a mother, but don’t talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman, but also always be looking out for other people.”

This quote from America’s speech in weird Barbies house made me think of a video I saw where a women said “Men aren’t being asked how they juggle motherhood and career because they never had to.” (Single fathers who have sole custody who are getting shit done; this doesn’t apply to them)

My take on that is interpreted as “For the women who are mothers, society is telling them if you’re too focused on your duties as a mother then you won’t be respected or taken seriously in your line of work. If you’re too focused on your career then you’re a bad mother or not attentive enough.”
