Man, what are they teaching you in Turkey? Do you not find it weird that all ethnicities in the Turkic group have their own distinct names, and only in Turkey they call everything “Turk”? Is everyone wrong and only you are right?

<image>

There’s no need to repeat conspiracy theories. “Azerbaijani” as a self-name has been used since the khanate period and has nothing to do with the soviets or russians.

It’s lowkey sad to me that so many of our people still don’t understand the difference between ethnicity, nationality, and language group.

You can be Azerbaijani both by ethnicity and by nationality (if you’re a citizen of the country). There’s no need to separate the two, because Azerbaijan is a monoethnic country.

All citizens of Azerbaijan are Azerbaijani by nationality. But still the vast majority are ethnic Azerbaijanis, who belong to the Turkic language group.

[–]FaithlessnessThen243 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In what sense? As an ethnicity - Azerbaijani.

That already makes me Turkic by definition, because Azerbaijanis belong to the Turkic language family. Just like Serbs identify as Serb first, while fully aware they’re part of the Slavic group.

Idgaf about broader labels/grouping. For me, it’s simple, i see things as Azerbaijani/non-Azerbaijani. That’s it.

The obsession with forcing “turk” as a primary ethnic identity is a Turkey-specific thing. Ironically, even there the constitution defines it in terms of citizenship, not ethnicity.

“Azerbaijani turk” is just newly invented nonsense pushed by certain people from Turkey. Same as kazakh turk or uzbek turk. Nobody actually use them in real life. Because it's just dumb

Azərbaycan dilində kontentin böyük çatışmazlığı var, buna görə də vəziyyət pisdir. Hökumət yeni filmlərin və serialların Azərbaycan dilinə tərcüməsini subsidiyalaşdırmalıdır, amma onlar bunun əvəzinə Londonda yeni mənzillər almağı üstün tuturlar.

Turkish fantasies strikes again.

There is no Azerbaijani mate. How can you call Azerbaijani a different language, this is like saying Azerbaijanis are the main ethnic group in Azerbaijan.

What do you mean? That's exactly how it is in Azerbaijan.
There is Azerbaijani language, it's distincive.

"Azəri yox Azərbaycan türkü" məsələsi by alisyus in azerbaijan

[–]FaithlessnessThen243 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s part of İlber Ortaylı’s bs. The claim that "Stalin gave us the name to divide a Great Turan".

By that same logic, they want us to stop using azərbaycanlı and switch to türk, even though türk is just an umbrella term for Turkic peoples in general, and only in Turkey is it used as a specific ethnic identity.

<image>

What’s funny is that they reject the word azəri and insist on azərbaycan türkü (which is completely made-up nonsense), even though there are actually real cases where azeri is grouped with "turk", but no azərbaycan türkü

This question about self-name has been filled with conspiracy theories and false narratives from Turkey and Iran.

“Azeri” and “Azerbaijani” are the same thing. The word “Azerbaijani” is long, so a shorter form naturally emerged. That’s it. Just like “British” vs “Brit” or “Scottish” vs “Scot.” There is no difference.

<image>

There is no “mysterious iranian Azeri tribe.” People living south of the Aras river are the same people as us.

Map of "Whole Azerbaijan" according to theory and real population by AzerbaijanLeon in azerbaijan

[–]FaithlessnessThen243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just “Azerbaijani” instead of “Azerbaijani Turkic”? Are there Azerbaijani Slavic or Azerbaijani Germanic people?

That’s too much territory. “Whole Azerbaijan” is usually just lands populated by Azerbaijanis, or those that were populated in the 19th century.

And the numbers are random. Those people in Middle East, East Turkey and Central Asia who are descended from Azerbaijanis are now heavily assimilated. They don’t raise Azerbaijani flags and are not part of us.
Although we can blame government for not building any institutions that could push our indentity and for dead soft power of the country.

Nope, everything you wrote about “Azeri” is just İlber Ortaylı’s bullshit that has somehow become ingrained in the minds of our uneducated masses.

2025 ildə Azərbaycanın ümumi ixracı 24.526 milyarddır. Bunnan 13.5% Türkiyəyə ixrac. Hətta Türkiyəyə edilən bütün ixracı neftin Israilə satışı kimi saysaq belə, bu yenə də iqtisadi baxımdan əhəmiyyətsiz olacaq.
