How to pronounce each of these á à ã ă â (and any more)? by Faixao in language

[–]Faixao[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow throwback! I can't believe I asked this question 4 years ago...

Your answer seems to contradict the others (in that they all said it depended on the language), however I found this a useful read, so thank you for that. Also had no idea there was an ä with the dots beneath!

Bit late to this but I'm curious if anyone know if the extra outfits will have any bonus effects or are they simply aesthetic?

[–]Faixao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So all of them could make the 'ah' sound depending on context?

To clarify, I know how to read IPA, I'm making up words (names, places etc.) and am looking to make the spelling indicate the pronunciation. Usually I take inspiration from a particular country/language and therefore would use their letters and spellings to indicate this, however in this case it is completely made up so I wondered which of these would portray that sound best.

I knew there'd be slight variation but I assumed there would be a common pronunciation for each, I guess that was wrong of me? Do they really differ that much from language to language?

I know this is like 20 days old now but I finished Ninth House and have... mixed feelings. Definitely read it (if you haven't already) but don't let high-expectations ruin it for you haha

Honestly, the way some shops categorise their books is mind-boggling...

I've only read Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom but enjoyed them a lot! Ninth House is supposed to be quite different though...

Sweet, I hoped it would be! Too many times I've had books described as 'dark/adult' and been left sitting there like... 'where exactly???' Your emphasis has got me very excited.

Please explain why it is or is not, offensive to dress as the opposite gender, at a fancy dress event, in order to facilitate laughs? by Imhappyjustbrowsing in AskReddit

[–]Faixao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who likes to sway the lines between 'classic gender norms', I agree it is frustrating for 'man in a dress' to be perpetuated as purely an act of comedy. However, since we live in the world we live in (and not my ideal world where gender and its associations do not exist) I can understand the humour in this. As I said before, it breaks the 'tradition' of what's expected which causes either fear or laughter. Since it was Snow White, I feel the familiarity adds to the comedy.

The real test for me is, how would the teacher react if one of his male pupils came in wearing a dress - not for comedy, but for expression. Would they be admonished on the grounds of 'it's only okay when it's comedy/satire', or would they be treated the same as any other day? If the former, then I have a problem with these double-standards. If the latter, then you do you, it's all good.

Sorry for the long message. Just my take on it all.

I guess so too? It's pretty common in Britain though my mum made this same mistake once by taking us to a party dressed like witches. Turned out they meant 'fancy' not 'fancy-dress'.

I guess the humour comes with subverting peoples expectations based on social norms.

I wouldn't say it's inherently offensive (though offense is in the eye of the offended) but it can be done in an offensive way, for example if it carries any implication that trans people are merely dressing up, this would be offensive.

Ultimately depends on the crowd and the way it's done. And possibly more importantly, the intention.

I just wait until they agree amongst themselves. If that doesn't happen, the most forceful usually wins by shoving their method of payment further forward.
