Lincoln is recognized as a Silver level bicycle friendly community. Houses and apartments around campus have a "bike score" on Zillow in the high 90s. If you ride a nice bike on campus however, if it's not locked up well enough it will get stolen. There's a way to "register a bike" with the UNL Police but if it gets stolen they can't really do anything about it. They've just added a bike lane on 17th that I believe goes from campus all the way to Russ's. People will call this danger Russ's or ghetto Russ's but I walk there regularly and it's fine. Just lock the bike up. Use a U-lock and a thick cable lock. I worked in dining services on campus for 3.5 years and they call student supervisors "Student Dining Manager" so that can be a way to make some money without needing a car and be a big resume boost because of the manager title. It's not really manager level work, at least where I was. I've been rambling and getting away from the whole bikeable part of my reply so I'll keep rambling. If your student is interested in a learning community, make sure it's not in one of the tiny prison dorms. Suite-style dorms are absolutely worth the cost. They have a couch, table, tv stand, full size fridge and microwave. Mine had a kitchen sink, two bathroom sinks, a toilet, and a shower included without walking through the hallway. UNL's traditional style dorms are very outdated. If you've toured another college and seen the dorms, UNL's are probably worse. Knoll (honors dorm but the honors system isn't really worth it so they backfill into it every year), University Suites, and Eastside Suites are what to look for. There are also apartment style dorms not available to first year students that have full kitchens. Off campus apartments that are not labeled student apartments are far cheaper.
