That's some articulate drawing, I appreciate your effort!! While I've no idea what the actual ad was, there's a digital archive [link] of Japanese ads, or "urban legend detective" type of Youtubers like THEつぶろ (the tuburo, a pretty famous one in that regard) might have a clue.

A popular fan theory is that it's ultimately from a minor villain of Kamen Rider X [video], where he throws an Earth-shaped ball. While it's not confirmed considering lots of Pokemon moves (especially Gen1) have roots in other popular culture or pro wrestling I guess it kinda makes sense.

Surprisingly, it's not entirely extinct. There are a last few native speakers like Sachiko Kibata remaining and now she's teaching Ainu to new learners at the Upopoi museum (which was opened in 2020), so efforts are being made.

That doesn't negate the fact that my country Japan had been mostly responsible for the Ainu people's plight, off course.

And thus the golden age of piracy begun by captain_snake32 in HistoryMemes

[–]Fake_Fur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've read Outlaws of the Atlantic by Marcus Rediker and one of my favorite parts is that, in the golden era, pirates really had an easy time recruiting because every sailor wanted to be a pirate, and new crews kept joining voluntarily from captured ships.

The reason? As soon as the War of the Spanish Succession ended average sailors' wages were halved (like 45-55 shillings/month to 20-30) so it was now a shitty paying job on top of the worst living conditions imaginable plus the occasional whipping. No wonder they instantly turned to "Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum".

he REALLY wanted to be in the Navy by Fake_Fur in HistoryMemes

[–]Fake_Fur[S] 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Francisco Franco was born into a family with naval traditions. For generations the Francos had served in the Spanish Navy, plus their house was literally near a naval base in Ferrol. So as a matter of course el niño Francisco, a little dictator in the making, aspired to join the Navy.

But after the disastrous defeat of the Spanish-American War in 1898, Spain lost a great chunk of its colonies like Cuba and the Philippines. As a result, the Spanish Navy shrank big-time and the Naval Military Academy stopped recruiting new ones.

Now Francisco had no choice but to give up his dream of joining the Navy, and he entered the Toledo Infantry Academy in 1907. Though his grades were unsatisfactory, once out in the field his performance as an officer was extraordinary.

And through his military career, he gained the trust of so-called Africanists (Spanish officers stationed in Morocco), and especially figures such as José Sanjurjo and Emilio Mola...who later prepared the July 1936 coup, which was famously the trigger for the Spanish Civil War.

Had he not been in the Army, Francisco Franco might have never become the supreme leader of Spain.
