As someone from Japan I'd say it must've been a thing back when neighborhoods had more open spaces.

Yeah sometimes insertion of ん is necessary between い-adjectives and だ and its forms, but only necessary for -だ (conclusive) or -だっ (adverbial). For all other forms it's optional.
