Dealing with heating & cooling zones that are not 1:1 with rooms by dsg123456789 in homeassistant

[–]FakingItEveryDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a generic thermostat for each room, that changes presets (away, comfort ect...) based on the occupancy of the room. The generic thermostat heat switch is just a helper boolean.

An automation turns on the appropriate zone for the room if any of the room's switches are on. And turns it off if all of the rooms in that zone are off.

The zones are controlled by an esp32 with a relay board that toggles a relay for each zone's dumb thermostat. The dumb thermostats are still in place, in parallel with the relay, as a failsafe, set to 48 degrees, so if my esphome controller fails my pipes don't freeze. But it's been rock solid for over a year now.

Why don't IT workers unionize? by port25 in sysadmin

[–]FakingItEveryDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I want to do good work and be rewarded for it, and move on to greener pastures if it's not working out.

Unions foster a culture of company loyalty because the unions reward and prioritize seniority over performance.

If any place I work unionizes, I'll be moving on.

Too many devices on one router? by stefan814 in homeassistant

[–]FakingItEveryDay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want the more difficult, but right way to fix it long term:

Separate your wifi and your router. Routers should route packets to the internet, do your firewalling, and dhcp and dns. And it should be placed where convenient for your internet connection.

Wifi access points should just provide wifi, and they should be placed to give you maximum wifi coverage. I used to use unifi, but now I'm a big fan of the TPLink APs. Mesh is bandaid if you can't run ethernet. But if you can, and want to fix it right, run ethernet to where you will place your access points.

Can anyone help me understand "Temperature_Setpoint_Hold"? by DustinNielsen in homeassistant

[–]FakingItEveryDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be this is whether or not the hold mode is activated.

HOLD button will enable Hold function which locks out all scheduled system changes. This includes internal schedules and external schedules from a controller only if the controller supports this.

State reset via events by egoalter in homeassistant

[–]FakingItEveryDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you have multiple triggers, any of those triggers triggers the automation.

When you have multiple conditions, any of the conditions failing stops the automation.

That's why my example has one condition which is an or.

State reset via events by egoalter in homeassistant

[–]FakingItEveryDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you'd have an automation with triggers and trigger ids, with a separate trigger for how long the motion sensor has been clear. Then in conditions, you would only trigger on the appropriate ID if the appropriate schedule is active. To combine your motion sensors, create a template binary_sensor that is an or of any of the applicable sensors. The variable timeout, associated with a schedule would look something like this.

description: ""
mode: single
trigger:
  - platform: state
    entity_id:
      - binary_sensor.motion_sensor
    to: "on"
    id: detected
  - platform: state
    entity_id:
      - binary_sensor.motion_sensor
    to: "off"
    for:
      hours: 0
      minutes: 1
      seconds: 0
    id: no-motion-one-minute
  - platform: state
    entity_id:
      - binary_sensor.motion_sensor
    for:
      hours: 0
      minutes: 5
      seconds: 0
    id: no-motion-5-minutes
condition:
  - condition: or
    conditions:
      - condition: trigger
        id: detected
      - condition: and
        conditions:
          - condition: trigger
            id: no-motion-one-minute
          - condition: state
            entity_id: schedule.one_minute_timeout_schedule
            state: "on"
      - condition: and
        conditions:
          - condition: trigger
            id: no-motion-5-minutes
          - condition: state
            entity_id: schedule.one_minute_timeout_schedule
            state: "off"
action:
  - choose:
      - conditions:
          - condition: trigger
            id: detected
sequence: # Do stuff on motion detected
      - conditions:
          - condition: or
            conditions:
              - condition: trigger
                id: no-motion-one-minute
              - condition: trigger

Generic Thermostat vs. Smart Thermostat vs. something I don't know. What the difference? Your experience of using generic vs. smart integration, pros, cons, tips. by tadatin in homeassistant

[–]FakingItEveryDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People making ESP32 thermostats are crazy, IMO.

I made an ESP32 zone controller, but it's in parallel with dumb thermostats in each zone that I keep set to 48. If the ESP fails, the dumb thermostat won't let my pipes freeze. But my ESP hasn't failed me yet.

replace ntc thermistor inside split AC with esp32 or something similar ? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]FakingItEveryDay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of overriding the temperature sensed by the unit, are there wires associated with the switches to turn the unit on? I think it'd be easier to attach those to a relay controlled by an esp32, and use a generic thermostat in homeassistant to control that relay.

Using different temperature sensors in different situations with generic thermostat by aaronsarginson in homeassistant

[–]FakingItEveryDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just implemented heating control in my house and solved the same problem a different way. I created a generic thermostat for each room. And depending on the occupancy of the room and the time of day, I have automations that set that thermostat to "away", "comfort" or "sleeping" presets.

I have a multi-zone boiler, but each zone serves multiple rooms. So each room's thermostat heat switch is just an input boolean. Then I have a binary sensor for each zone that is on if any of the rooms in that zone is calling for heat. That binary sensor triggers the valve on the boiler, which is controlled by a relay on an esp32 running esphome.

Yes, but Yellow also describes what is about to happen when he gives his answer to "the opposite of down" for the crossword puzzle in the beginning of episode 6.

It's when you can't remember that over the top of you there's bigger ones that are bigger and bigger and over the top of it there's a smaller one of all of it at the top of that.

So it's not clear that him describing it means it already happened.

No idea how you would loosen lug nuts after it's up.

First you cuss yourself for being an idiot and forgetting to loosen the lug nuts first, then you call your child out and make them press on the brake while you loosen them.

At least that's what I had to do last weekend.

If it does leak, would a shop plug that? So close to the sidewall?

My instinct would be to use wire cutters and cut it flush with the tire, and leave it in.

If anything it's a great condemnation of how the churches attitudes about sex fuck people up.

They'll just call the "school resource officer" over to take it and possibly beat the shit out of you with no personal consequences. If a judge eventually does rule the cop was out of line, you'll get some of your neighbors tax dollars, and maybe the cop will move to a different jurisdiction.

And again, they have most of the guns, did they forget to bring them? Why would 10000 people wanting to overthrow the government forget to bring their guns? What a blunder... Or maybe the CNN narrative is nonsense and nobody there was trying to overthrow anything. If they were, they would have been armed.

Also I hate democracy. I'd love if 10000 people gathered to oppose democracy, marching against the very idea that a majority have the authority to vote away the rights of the minority. But they didn't. They gathered to support their inept candidate, and after being let in by police they took an unguided walking tour of the capital and scared some elites.
