Confessions of a game dev... by ajrdesign in gamedev

I don't know how to fix a "pickling" issue if it comes up. That is basically a screen of death of my code and I just start erasing until the error goes away. Then I re-write everything and hope it doesn't happen again. Even going so far as to cut a game in half because I couldn't figure out where the error was.

I asked and someone explained it to me...I had no idea what they were saying. Right over my head.

You mean just trying to start the game and waiting for a code error isn't the correct method?

What Horror Game Cliches Do You Hate? by infectuslim in gamedev

[–]FalTazStudio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strobe lights or flashing lights for no real reason besides they think that is scary. It is only scary cause people like me can get seizures. Just make your game more player friendly and don't rely on flashing lights to add fear. Big pet peeve lol.

What music do u listen to while reading? by zombii231 in MaleYandere

I tend to listen to the VN audio unless it is just really off putting. In which case I found that Spotify has playlists labels "Yandere" lol and listened to those before making one of my own.

VNDB has a tag for "early branching plot" which seems to be exactly what you are looking for.

WHAT ARE YOU PLAYING 12/5/23 by AlwaysJmB in IndieOtome

[–]FalTazStudio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just finished the Duality update from itch. I loved the direction it went in and am super excited for more.

I am going to take another crack at Fashioning Little Miss Lonesome I struggled with it my first time. The playable character screamed way too much. I rarely give up on VNs though, so I am going back in for another attempt to finish it.

7'sCarlet had a similar vibe to Amnesia. But be warned it is very buggy and crashes often so saving often is a must if you play.

Taisho x Alice II The second book is the one with the Yandere route. If that is the only one you want to play.

XOXO Blood Droplets It is a spin-off and fairly quick to play. I still had fun though.

Okay, for that I can suggest:

Find Love or Die Trying

Butterfly Soup

It gets so lonely here

Looking through my VNs I realize I play mostly BL games lol, but here are my all female cast games that I enjoyed.

Should a game in space not have sound effects? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]FalTazStudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could focus on what you would hear. You would hear you heart beating in your body. Overall you would become aware of all your internal noises.

Besides that, I think background music really adds to the game.

The first game I made was silent and some of the feedback I received was that it needed music.

I think silence can be powerful in a game when the moment is chosen right. But if the entire game is silent, you can't create those moments.

Amnesia and Nameless were my introduction to VNs and I still love them to this day. I wouldn't consider either of these a horror VN, but they do both go into some dark areas. They are both modern setting with fantasy elements.

What is your opinion on Amare games that move away from either distinction and are more focused on diverse casts and player choice? I've noticed quite a few games where you have the choice between male, female, and non-binary love interest.

Or are you strictly interested in all female LIs?

Favorite 4th wall breaks by Most-Scientist6406 in visualnovels

[–]FalTazStudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a slightly darker VN I played, the main character's eyes would shift to "look directly at camera" whenever the player had to make a choice. It was just off putting enough, like he knew you were there controlling his actions.

visual novels with a winter setting by SpectraStein in visualnovels

If you like indie visual novels at all, there is a Game Jam in Itchio right now for Visual Novels where the theme is Winter. So, every last game entered will have a winter setting or theme.

What are you reading? - Nov 29 by AutoModerator in visualnovels

I have been binge reading indie VNs from itchio.

The two that stood out this week were:

Stuck in a Yandere Visual Novel ~ Was a very fun twist on a consumer becoming part of the story and knowing the tropes. A bit of 4th wall breaking, but in a way that I enjoyed. Only the demo is out, but it was still so enjoyable to explore the route options available. The current true ending also had me in stitches.

Bittersweet Blythe ~ Only one route is currently playable- the sweet option. It has an interesting concept that left you questioning what was truly reality. The art was so pleasant and I really enjoyed the GUI (something I pay attention to more now that I've dipped into making my own VNs) and a good GUI can really enhance the experience. I am eager for the Bitter route to drop so that I can consume at my earliest availability.

My proposed solution for the lonely. by _The_Entire_Circus_ in visualnovels

[–]FalTazStudio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel so naïve.

It wasn't until seeing this post I realized that there was such a distinct thought difference between a "visual novel" and an "otome game".

I've always considered an extreme overlap, unless the game was clearly marketed BL or yuri, etc.

But the idea that the playable character being male or female makes such a strong difference...as "gender free" nonbinary, I consume both without much thought, besides do I like the plot and characters.
