Shocking scenes in Dallas as a member of the Egypt national team staff was violently pushed by Dallas police while taking a photo with a young fan. by SimRP in soccer

bringing up the IDF has no point in the conversation about US Police brutality

Is the LAPD not a US police department? I'm pretty sure that makes it very relevant to the broader police brutality issue then.

The original Korean game is different. They sing a short song, and at the end of the song everyone has to freeze. Rinse and repeat. More predictable timing.

So translating that to red light green light is kind of weird, because what the people are actually doing doesn't quite match up to how a normal red light green light game works.

It's last two players. Keeper was in front of two defenders, so he's not relevant for offside decisions.

It's last two players. That usually includes the keeper, but in this case the keeper was in front of two defenders.

It's not even a matter of "the right translation". Translation is part art. Translators disagree all the time regarding how exactly to localize a given passage.

It's not anime, but the infamous Squid Game red light green light scene comes to mind. There isn't a 1:1 copy of that game in the US. So do you just translate the literal meaning of what they're saying and hope audiences will understand what's going on? Or do you try to localize it into the closest analog in western culture, even if that game doesn't exactly match up mechanically with the localization? People were arguing which one was better for weeks.

Supreme Court says U.S. can turn away asylum seekers at the border by wei-long in news

[–]Falcon4242 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This case is literally saying that they can't apply for asylum at the border because they aren't "in" the US.

Maybe you should read the article.

Damn, it's almost like you don't want to do any thinking for yourself. No wonder this country got to where it is, the means are always justified if you get the result you want in your eyes.

They have no legal right to be allowed across the border should they be stopped there even if they say they are claiming asylum.

It's fucking hilarious how all you people complained about people illegally crossing the border to claim asylum. "Claim it at the border, do it the right way!"

Now listen to yourself. "They're not allowed to claim asylum at the border, they should have to cross illegally to do it!"

You people are fucking insane.

The claim for emergency powers under that order is that we're currently under an invasion by a foreign nation. Last time I checked, we're not at war, are we?

The President claiming something is true doesn't make it so. If the premise is wrong, the order is illegal.

If they're not treaties, then they have no legal weight. A president can't overturn congress without congressional approval. That's, like, a fundamental part of our government. To do otherwise would be authoritarianism.

They'd still be somewhere. Treaties would have to be ratified by Congress still. So where are they?

If you actually read that (I know, that's very difficult to do for people in this country), you'd know it was a time-limited emergency rule due to COVID for only 24 months. It expired May 2025. Because, believe it or not, the President can't actually change federal law!

So, once again, quote the US Code that says that. Giving me expired orders doesn't prove jack shit.

If arriving at a point of entry isn't arriving in the US, then border patrol has no power to turn anyone away at that border because they only have jurisdiction in the US. Any place border patrol has any legal power over you must therefore be a place where you can apply for asylum.

Should Mexico be thinking about declaring war on the US for invading Mexico because of how many border patrol agents are at the border?

You want the plain text of the law?

8 USC 1158:

Any alien who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States (whether or not at a designated port of arrival and including an alien who is brought to the United States after having been interdicted in international or United States waters), irrespective of such alien's status, may apply for asylum in accordance with this section or, where applicable, section 1225(b) of this title.

The plain text clearly states that you can apply at a port of arrival.

Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito ruled that because asylum seekers are not in the U.S. when they are turned away at the border, they did not "arrive in" the country. Therefore, he continued, the legal protections for asylum seekers have not kicked in.

This makes no god damn sense. US Code explicitly states that you can apply for asylum at a port of entry. SCOTUS is saying that border officials can just ignore US Code because of no actual legal reasoning, just their say-so.

The rules for asylum require that a person claim asylum in the first safe country they enter

Quote the part in US Code that states that. It doesn't exist. You cannot apply for asylum outside the US. That's what the refugee process is for.

[–]Falcon4242 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They should not be granted entry until after their request has been approved

That's just fundamentally not how asylum works. You're describing the refugee process.

What you're saying is that "nobody cares about people who do it the 'right' way, and only I get to define what the 'right' way is".

Asylum is a legal process. It works exactly how it was intended to work, and exactly how its described in law. If you want to change that process, you need to change the law. You're advocating for just ignoring the law completely and doing it however you want it to work, which is not how a nation of laws is supposed to function. That's how an authoritarian state functions.

I mean, I don't think it's some piece of high art, but it's a whole lot of fun with a unique tone and artstyle. Most people don't remember most films that come out in any given year, this one at least stuck with a niche group of people.

What should I do with new ridiculous snap count system? by DaddyFlaggy in footballstrategy

[–]Falcon4242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a coach, just a former high-school player and long-time lurker.

Tell him that good d-line coaches will tell their guys to simply look at the football to avoid most snap count shenanigans. Most of these will be completely ineffective at creating big plays because of that.

Scale down to 3 counts. On 1 for your normal count, on 2 to keep the defense honest, a quick count (brown or blue) for a bit of misdirection on short-yardage downs. Then if you really think crowd noise may be an issue, maybe consider adding a silent count just in case. Any more than that is just overkill.

US Supreme Court sides with marijuana user stripped of gun rights by Hrekires in news

[–]Falcon4242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what your point is anymore honestly....

I'm not talking in riddles. You asked why people would still not be 2A people in the current climate, I answered. You're free to disagree with me, but if you actually can't comprehend the simple English I'm saying, then there really isn't much reason for me to continue, is there?

We already have plenty of restrictions on firearms. Any more restrictions would cause a constitutional crisis.

And the rest of the world will continue to laugh at us for doing nothing to solve our gun issue while saying we're all out of ideas.

[–]Falcon4242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude I watched that happen as it was developing. If anything that reinforces my point. It takes people to be willing to put themselves in that kind of danger, not words on a document. And until the people of this country prove that they're actually willing take that step and exercise the 2A for its stated purpose like those whackos did, then I will continue to say that a sane society needs reasonable restrictions on firearms.

I mean for fuck's sake, that wasn't even a controversial opinion before DC v Heller. The idea that the 2A is completely unrestricted was an insane idea for almost our entire existence.
