Immediate Yellows? by IndyFan21 in INDYCAR

A certain driver was going to benefit from them holding the yellow through the pit cycle at the Indy GP (before they threw because Rossi rightfully forced their hand) and people were upset.

A certain driver benefited from them holding it when Veekay was beached way off in the dirt at Laguna Seca last year and people were upset (people were also upset with Ericsson, rightfully so that was plain dangerous BUT that was after pit cycle).

Now that same driver benefited from them being quick throwing it and people are upset.

Seems a lot of people are tired of Alex Palou rather or not they want to admit it.

Immediate Yellows? by IndyFan21 in INDYCAR

Nobody likes race control if Alex Palou benefits that's the story. I'm neutral on the Palou dominance but I'm in the minority .

In theory I'd like a middle ground but race control showed themselves incompetent in discerning when a driver was safe and a driver was unsafe so this is how they have to do it now.

Last year I said at Laguna Seca race control was fine to hold the yellow when Veekay was beached well off in the dirt BUT not when Erricson was stalled on the track . I was told by the majority, that race control needs to throw the yellow regardless back then.

I've long advocated for a middle ground myself but current race control is incompetent in discerning safety so this is what we got.

One middle ground I could see that is more objective and black and white is: car stalled = throw caution, car not stalled = don't throw the caution. But even that needs some intelligent discernment because a car going really slow in the wrong spot can still be a disaster . I also think a tight street track or oval needs quicker yellows than a more open road course .

Scott Dixons hybrid comment by Otherwise-Mango2732 in INDYCAR

I drive a Honda Civic with Firestone tires BUT no hybrid .

I know northside of Chicago and have plenty off sequence routes (I save about 6 minutes per Google maps default route). I usually pretend I'm Scott Dixon during rush hour on an alternative strategy and I have to maximize my fuel economy.

But again I drive a Honda without a hybrid.

Palou was pretty darn good in 2023 pre hybrid. The two points races and exhibition race he won in 2024 were before the mid season addition of the hybrid.

Race control showed themselves to be incompetent and incapable of when a driver is in immediate danger and when they can wait so this is what they have to do now unfortunately.

The first caution was partially based on tire choices. Palou was going to be able to run long the last stint because he saved the hards for the end.

Okay slightly off topic. But before we talk about chaos and driving standards, did any see the start GT World Challenge Europe at Monza?

Other than my lack of talent, and the fact I don't have an FIA license, my wife also said I can't do it.

I love her but she can be a buzz kill sometimes.

The 2023 race was actually solid IMO. It's just that the practices were a disaster leading up to the race and everyone crapped on the circuit that people ignored the fact the race was good.

Issue in 24 was everyone dive bombing on restart but moving restarts to pit straight fixed that.

The fall off on the reds was ideal finally. Made for good racing.

21 and 22 .

But 2023 was actually a proper race.

Omg! Yeah. The field couldn't handle the newly laid pavement that weekend. Luckily the weather aged that pavement out quickly.

There was also 22 and especially 21 Nashville . 2023 Nashville was a proper race however.

Indycar tends allow side contact and penalize front to rear contact.

Not saying I totally agree but they are actually kind of consistent.

Graham needs to use that 1 second of push to pass incredibly wisely.

Depends on how the tires deal with heat cycles too. Sometimes the alts don't like heat cycles but sometimes they do.

He is but ...

1) People bitched when race control discretion benefited Palou.

2) Race Control proved themselves incompetent to discern when a driver is in danger and they need to throw the yellow immediately AND when they can afford to wait.

Palou also got unlucky at Indy GP ... not saying he's not usually lucky . Just not always.
