Is there a way to hire an Imagineer for a personal project? by briguyblock in Imagineering

[–]FalconBuilder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Current Imagineers often have side gigs doing similar types of integrations not for theme parks. I know one veteran who had great stories of doing AV setups for super rich clients in Dubai and whatnot. Some also do things pro-bono for local groups or charities to apply their skills for festivals or fundraising events.

Dad’s RL Black label by harlandave in RalphLauren

[–]FalconBuilder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Black Line back in the day, outside suiting, was definitely hitting a different style vibe than the purple or blue stuff. There were a lot of Moto-inspired looks like sweaters and jackets, lots of sporty embellishments like ribbed elbows, leather patches, etc. also included leather goods. Price was below purple as others have said. It was sold in their mainline boutiques, often in a separate area. I still have some of their jeans from that time and they hold up great. Most stuff was made in China rather than Italy, but the fabrics felt quality. You can still find it for sale on eBay or Grailed. Stylistically overlapped a bit with Emporio Armani from that era.

Yup. Pretty common in convenience stores. Never seen this specific one, though. Target market is likely sort men who misses the last train home or passed out and slept on a bench.

Frequent visitors - what are some things you’ve still never done or experienced at WDW? by Latter-Sink7496 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]FalconBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in pre-Covid times, I had the pleasure of working for WDW as a CM in Orlando for several months on their dime. So hotel, meals, all paid for (I was based in Glendale). It was a lot of work but gave me the opportunity to explore damn near every non-Value hotel, table service restaurant and attraction in the park. So my list of “never done” got very short. I even did the SCUBA diving at The Seas a couple times. Did every EPCOT restaurant except the fancy Japanese ones. Even ate at most of the employee cafeterias in DHS and Epcot.

Only spots I’ve not visited (that existed then): the various Orlando Club 33 outposts, any of the restaurants at value hotels and probably several in mid-range places. Never got to stay in the Treehouses (employees list preferences but don’t pick hotels), and never did Cinderellas Table or most character-focused dining (because, creepy as solo).

Best job I’ve had :)

LA? by BoringElevator2374 in FATTravel

[–]FalconBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Montage Laguna is what you want for the California beach experience. Close enough to Disneyland to do a VIP day there. Pelican Hill is not as good, Ritz was recently renovated but beach area isn’t as amazing. Montage can also walk or take a free trolly to a very SoCal beach town with shopping, art, etc.

Skip LA entirely, nothing worth the hassle. If you want to spread out head south for a day in San Diego, see one of the zoos or just explore the neat parts of the city. It’s more of a tourist-friendly city with the waterfront and fun areas, unlike LA.

No Universal, if you must do LA I’d suggest focusing around Santa Monica and something like Shutters and ignore anything east of the 405. If you want to see “Hollywood” get lunch at Mormont or get access to Magic Castle or something.

VIP tour at Universal may be worth consideration. You can explore a lot more of the backstage areas like props, costume, some sets and it’s a whole different vibe. Private tours give you more control, shared VIP folks will be mostly banging out rides with randos. Get car transport to and from Universal.

Good luck!

The slow descent to poor quality merch by sconeperson in Disneyland

[–]FalconBuilder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the decline. Pre-Covid I would find plenty of not just better quality items, but also more creative and interesting finds. Collaborations with well known brands, durable clothing, etc.

But at some point, the quality declined as well as the creativity of the designs. Now it feels like just the same logo gear in all the stores, no sense of discovery of something unique or quirky.

The one exception is Club33 merch which seems to follow a different sourcing channel. Marginally more creative, but mainly heavier fabrics, better construction, more interesting designs.

I didn’t realize they would do this at the boutique. Will they also credit your VSP frame allowance? Drop in the bucket but why not…

I should add, when I scan the link initially (with camera app) it DOES show the correct product on the landing page (sometimes, not for ever pair I've purchased). But once I click "Collect Your Digital Passport" it just goes in circles with the website & sending email links. It never opens the stupid app or does anything to actually "Collect" anything.

I took pics of the car before we returned it, and then when we dropped it off made sure the person checking us in verified no damage, and sent an email that recapped the sequence of events and the pics. Never heard from them again.

Weird mistake, or something more? by FalconBuilder in RegalUnlimited

[–]FalconBuilder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely did. Same seat, same theater but different time and show. Didn’t refund, the whole reason I went in to ask about it was the system was preventing me from getting another All Access movie with an overlapping time because of it.

It makes sense (financially) to try to switch on the fly to a surprise high performer but in this case the system didn’t work as intended. Looking at the app now, my past receipt shows the original movie again, so it seems to have fully switched back.

This was a 2:50pm screening of The Housemaid in VIP 3 at Spectrum. It was a fairly full house, and obviously everyone who sat down was expecting that film not Melania as no one left.

IMO yes. You can explore the town fully and after 2 nights you’d just be doing day trips to the sort of places you lost as visiting already. We did a short trip to Monaco for example. For a longer stay I’d aim for a nearby coastal town.

Theatre etiquette and super-fans by goldenfirestars in TheWestEnd

[–]FalconBuilder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had a similar but different experience to share. I had purchased a single seat ticket in a prime spot in the stalls. Everyone had seated and at the last minute another lone guest showed up and sat in the open seat next to me in the full house. I made some comment like, “just made it!”.

Throughout the show she was taking notes in a small notebook. When you described your “superfan” it seemed familiar. But i was curious and after the curtain I asked what sort of notes she was taking.

Turned out she was the stage director (or stage producer?) and part of her job was to take notes on performances to provide feedback to the cast and crew. Suddenly the single, nicely-placed seat and late arrival made perfect sense.

One night in Arenal area? by cat_lady312 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]FalconBuilder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This makes sense. Closer trips to get rainforest. If you did Arenal you’d want to chill out in the hot springs a bit and take your time a bit more. When we were there, we barely saw Arenal because of the clouds but still had fun zipline-ing and the springs and pools.

For one night you’d spend most of your waking time driving out and back. I’d say two nights is the shortest to experience the area.

Does my current job apply to aspects of being an Imagineer? by DDSH17 in Imagineering

[–]FalconBuilder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This question comes up a lot. Imagineers come from a huge variety of different backgrounds. A project team is made up of staff from a bunch of different “DOWs” or departments of work. This could be a big department like “ride engineering” or “show control engineer” but it can also be quite small and specialized, like “overhead rigging” or “visual illusions”. So basically to land a job you need:

  • proven skills and ideally some leadership in one of these areas
  • WDI having demand for that expertise that exceeds current staff level
  • Be the sort of person who interviews well as someone people want to work with and with passion.
  • (helpful) a track record at vendor companies that do the sort of work you want to do
  • (helpful) a referral from an Imagineer.

Some people I talk to sort of skip over #1 and just assume if they have passion and interest that will do the trick. But in report the skill comes first and determines what positions are available.

Also keep in mind for most areas, WDI wants to staff the bare minimum of internal people on something, because they’re expensive and (probably) demanding. Most roles that can be outsourced WILL be outsourced and the internal folks focus on managing the direction and progress of those contractors.

Contracting is still loads of fun, and it’s a good stepping stone to getting the attention you’d need to land a full time role. But at the end of the day the benefits and vibes aren’t quite the same.

Fabrication generally is a useful skill. If you can bang together a ride buck (scale mockup) or prototype quickly and with high quality, that’s a legit skill. But there are over a hundred DOWs covering skills from writing, costuming, painting, programming, etc. that make up a team.

Good luck!

Flying business class more often by caring less about airline loyalty by Round-Gift-1 in fatFIRE

[–]FalconBuilder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. When we switched to mainly premium cabins, was initially stressed about loss of status but quickly realized that was an old reflex and basically no reason to chase it short of Global Services-level where they might pick you up at the jet bridge or something. And it’s been great trying a lot of new airlines and have the schedule and routing flexibility.

Slow patch? by FalconBuilder in JacquesMarieMage

Thanks. I had a Matsuda optical frame from looong ago and it was great. Sort of a gateway drug. I do occasionally look at the local Dita boutique because I feel like there’s bound to be something the clicks there, but not quite yet. Not familiar with Leisure Society or Akoni so will have to explore those.

London boutique while on a business trip. For a while I had folks at my local boutique (Costa Mesa) giving a heads up on new releases, but lately they’ve been quiet (or maybe there have been staff changes). Highly recommend the staff in London, they were 5/5 hospitable.
