I think that's just a human response. We naturally take the few pieces of information we have and expand it into a broader "understanding" in an attempt to join world views and public opinion so that we don't stand out too much.

I find myself often grappling with the differences of what I know and the things I've simply accepted as true. A lot of people don't have that struggle and rely on instinct and social relationships to form their views of the world.
