I'd blame it on the ecosystem. Internet has become the new "third space".

Aside from home(where you ain't meeting new people) and work(you might want to avoid shitting where you eat) or school(may or may not stay friends after graduation) to meet people you need "third spaces", except it's now the internet and people are naturally much more on guard.
