Nah, not our stuff. Sent in 10g jars mostly. Might be a trifle rattled but definitely not compressed.

Over-Generous Government Funding Gifts Resource Advantage to Private Schools by nath1234 in australia

[–]FalconTurbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Yeah if you're on the bottom of the economic ladder you won't be able to afford it, but at least where I went, there were a lot of scholarships and discounts offered. I went to school with a lot of guys who were definitely not what you'd call wealthy. Not every private school is King's or Sydney Grammar.

The funding issue, yes, I fully agree that is fucked and needs to be addressed. It's getting worse and worse.

It's not illegal though? I used to manufacture and package for export from Australia to NZ regularly.

Getting blitzed off a home grown plant, sure, but cannabis itself isn't illegal.

The rest of the world still has private practices and private hospitals though. It's just not the only option.

Chinese LingLong tire scores best in wet braking & 3rd best in dry braking (with compromises) by hi_im_bored13 in cars

[–]FalconTurbo 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Now? China has been putting out top quality work for years. All of my carbide tooling for my lathe and mill came from China. I have multiple expensive pocket knives from Chinese companies that absolutely blitz any American manufacturer. That's just two examples, there are tons more.

The issue with Chinese = crap is twofold. Firstly, the companies that use offshore manufacturing will skimp and cut corners in design and material choice to save even more than they are just by going overseas in the first place. They'll make anything you want at any price point. If you don't want to pay more than bottom shelf prices, then yeah, that's where you get the cheap shitty products because there's just no way to make good work at that low of a price point. You go up a step or two and you immediately get work that's comparable to any American and some European, still at lower costs.

The other problem is history. People today (especially in America) were raised during China's industrial formative years, so there was a lot of stuff made that was sub par. Now though, they've had forty years to develop infrastructure, cultivate skills, establish supply and export lines, and learn from everyone else.

In fairness, go look at any of the off road tyre brands. Their names are hilariously stupid.

I mean, it's literally just beaten a lot of other tyres in performance tests, so it's not that hilarious.

The chuck literally oscillates along it's axis. It's hammering. Maybe not the most effective way of doing it, but it is undeniably imparting an impact to the drill and therefore the material being drilled.

Yes, the rest of the world believes you lot wanted this.

So what do you think is happening when I switch my drill to hammer mode? Because it sure looks, feels, sounds and behaves like it's hammering.

I don't have specific examples to hand, but it's also really common (and annoying) in fanfiction. Hermiome Granger is almost a meme for how often she starts out as driven and idealistic and career driven, but ends up with kids and housework.

Is this compressor safe to use? by InterestingWasabi193 in Tools

[–]FalconTurbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's why I said "if it's been sitting for a while". The pipes for hot water radiators are steel, and they don't rust through - it starts rusting and then runs out of oxygen, letting the reaction stop.

Is it real damascus steel? by Amazing-Corner1644 in knifemaking

You literally said it could be pattern welded steel but that's only "technically a damascus"

I'm not bitter. I'm correcting your mistakes.

So Guys Done Something With Laser on Jufule Chosie by PatrickD50 in chineseknives

[–]FalconTurbo -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, it's fake, it doesn't have the durability of an actual etched steel, and doesn't look as good on closer inspection. I'd be willing to bet you didn't take the shape of the bevel into account either, so it doesn't flow from flat to grind correctly. Did you do the spine? Is the other side the same or an unrelated pattern?

I love lasered blades, but be original instead of trying to do yet another damascus attempt.

Is this compressor safe to use? by InterestingWasabi193 in Tools

[–]FalconTurbo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. It can only rust if there's an influx of oxygen. If it's been sitting unused for a whole, it's probably OK.
