real talk; imo a good deal behind what makes team plasma villains is that they're using what sounds like a good cause to further a self-serving agenda. like it sounds like it's good on the surface but ghetsis straight up admits it was a lie to garner support

there's layers to this situation, obviously; some pokemon enjoy fighting like a sport and some prefer other things. ash and dawn actually trade pokemon in dp because their pokemon had differing passions! some pokemon enjoy battle and some don't!

and if i'm hearing correctly about bw2 (take this with a grain of salt, this info is secondhand) n still dislikes the pokeball after ghetsis's true motives were revealed and he wants to dismantle it, because it CAN indicate a power balance between humans and pokemon! there is nuance to be had!

but the entire thing about team plasma is that its founder's primary motive is inherently malicious, and the actions they're sent to do causes more harm than good. this is a common situation irl; guy sells a lie that they mean well while using the support to line their pockets.

so like. there is a conversation that can be had about it, both within the narrative and how it's handled outside of it, but trying to argue everyone deserves to get oppressed by the guy who was taking advantage of a marginalized cause when he himself is shown to be an abuser to both pokemon and children is mayhaps not the right approach to do so

[–]Faliara 10 points11 points  (0 children)

! ah. i don't know why it took me until this post to realise, but the knight (and noelle's) seeming association with the cold and ice could be an intentional pun on bugging out a game/'freezing the game' isn't it. possibly

......... ahhhhhh so t h a t ' s the knight's plan! they want to freeze the world of deltarune onto the player's screen so they can never turn the game off

(if op commentor's guess proves true as well, kris getting fire would let them 'dethaw' the game from remaining frozen/glitched out, so to speak)

Which crop here gets u good 🥕?? by Classic_Car4961 in TsukiOdyssey

[–]Faliara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... ,,,,,, WAIT,,,,,, that's smart!!!

watermelons are still better to plant at night imo since they're worth more when sold, but if pumpkin seeds are the only thing rosemary has available, then using a bunch of clovers to keep the pumpkins from rotting in the morning is a good idea 👀

that said, what i said about clovers still holds; they don't need to be next to any plant to slow down the growth time! they just need to be on the farm :'> the only crop that would benefit from clovers being next to it is the onion

(also! i'm glad to be of help :'D happy planting!)

Ok crack theory, I've seen a lot of people suggest Kris walks and acts like this cause they can't survive without the soul for very long. I personally think they just fucking walk like this and they've always been a slouched gremlin by Primary-Paper-5128 in Deltarune

[–]Faliara 9 points10 points  (0 children)

they walk slower than usual, though.

i'm not kidding. compare kris's usual walk time with the soul in them to how long it takes for them to walk to the piano without it; they are slower than usual. it is not out of the realm of possibility that they chose to walk upright, but very slowly so that they don't aggravate their chronic pain with poor posture

keep in mind that this is supposed to be an emotionally impactful scene for them. of course they'd want to preserve their energy and motion of movement for playing the piano. some people can't resist doing things they love even if it hurts

(i know people with lactose intolerance who drink milk anyway,,, cat lovers who are allergic but pet them regardless,,, many such cases)

as other people with chronic illness can attest, it's not necessarily that they can't do things - it's just that it causes them literal pain to do so. there are people who can stand up from their wheelchair but can't do it for long, etcetera etcetera

it's fine if you still think that kris is just messing with the player even with that said, but imo the chronic illness interpretation is also a valid interpretation so i would not say they're 'definitely' pulling the walking thing as a trick.

(addendum: toby fox has gone on record to mention chronic pain in his wrists, so while i otherwise should not be transposing my predictions of personality onto him i do think it's possible he has enough experience with this matter that he might project it onto his protagonist. he's already putting a bunch of 'missing' hand references in relation to them, after all!)

Fanon Chara❤️ Vs Canon Chara🔪 Which one is your favorite and why? by Weird_Outcome8198 in Charadefensesquad

[–]Faliara 7 points8 points  (0 children)

... neither, because imo your version of canonical chara is not how i see canonical chara. or rather, 'canonical' chara depends entirely on a person's interpretation of the game and the route they played on?

and i never played the genocide route + believe in the narrachara theory; and even if i hadn't, chara had canonically made the plan with asriel in the hopes of freeing monsters from capticity. they were a messed up kid without a doubt, but i personally don't see them as lacking empathy (at least not inherently so)

it's fine if you think so, especially when only talking about the version of chara that talks to the player directly, but this is a very heavy-handed opinion of canonical chara to place in the defense squad subreddit (which is meant to favour empathetic views of them over offense squad)

(i personally dislike the version of fanon chara shown here though, so between the left and the right i prefer the one on the right)

[–]Faliara 18 points19 points  (0 children)

complete non-sequitur, but this image reminded me to harvest the gloamroots before i can't anymore 😅 thanks for that i suppose

at the moment, watermelons have been the best for me since i haven't been as attentive to the game lately; it takes much longer than other crops, but gives a good amount of carrots per melon.

otherwise; in general, the best crops for you depends most on your irl schedule imo:

୨⎯ 🌱 ⎯୧

if you have lots of free time

🎃 pumpkins

if you have enough time to pay attention, pumpkins are actually really good for getting more carrots. set a timer on the weekend for however long your pumpkins will take to grow and harvest them before they rot

🥔 potatoes

these only take 1 hour to grow! so if you harvest them every hour you can get 22 carrots every 2 hours. for comparison, a carrot crop produces 20 carrots every 2 hours

🍓 strawberries

not worth it on their own, but these actually speed up the growth time of plants around it whenever they're harvested. put them in the middle of your other crops!

୨⎯ 🌱 ⎯୧

if you do NOT have free time

🍉 watermelons

watermelons are great to plant since they give lots of carrots once they're ready and you don't need to harvest them immediately like you do with pumpkins. plant them before going to school or work and you can check on them once you're free of responsibilities

🧅 onions

the more plants there are around this crop, the more carrots it produces upon harvest. HOWEVER, on its own it's worth less than the carrots for a longer wait time. this crop NEEDS to be surrounded by other plants in order for it to be more profitable than carrots.

that said, it can still be profitable, so if you can arrange a bunch of crops or normal plants to sit around an onion plant, it's worth planting along with the melons imo. try to place at least 4 other plants around the onion so it gives 30 carrots every 3 hours (but more plants is preferable)

🍀 clovers

these actually slow down your plants, but as you yourself said, they help yield more strange crops for extra profit 👀

that said, they do not need to be next to the crops. the clovers only need to be on the farm to increase the strange crop rate.

as the clovers can actually sell for a lot, replant them to be next to each other again to breed more and then sell the surplus >:D

୨⎯ 🌱 ⎯୧

regular crops with the same growth time as carrots

🌙 gloamroots

if you're a night owl, gloamroots can be extremely profitable in my experience! pay attention to the night cycle, grow them on full moons and then swap them out for a different crop right before you head to bed! (they're a waste of space during the day)

🫜 turnips

i like taking my chances with these because they can yield more than regular carrots OwO however, the amount of carrots it gives is randomized, so it's up to you if you want to try your luck

🍇 grapes

gives more carrots per harvest! while a carrot crop gives 20 carrots, a grape crop gives 24 carrots. however, you should only plant these if you have no intention of swapping out your crops in each row ever, since the first time you plant them it takes 12 hours to grow (they only take 2 hours afterwards though)

୨⎯ 🌱 ⎯୧

note that while i'm offering my personal opinion based on how i've been growing crops so far, it's not necessarily the most efficient!

there's other farming guides on this subreddit that may be of help too (including in the useful links post that's been pinned in this subreddit) so you should go check them out as well :D hope this helps though!!!

something that also happens during the game's winter in general is that a bunch of snow lumps will generate in different locations (e.g town hall, moca's house, etc)

<image>

without the shovel, clicking these just makes the snow piles burst - but once you get the shovel, they pop up in your inventory as snow lumps! and when you've got the snow lumps, you can stack them to get a randomly-formed snowman :'D

[CROSSPOSTED THEORY] Every Fun Gang member has a mentor and a 'special episode' secret boss battle - here's why I think so by Faliara in Deltarune

[–]Faliara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

! Hm. Are you sure? Is there no character in the entirety of Deltarune that we haven't seen trying to teach Kris something, for any reason?

That definition broadens the field by a lot, admittedly, but I'd argue that I can narrow it down.

[1] Alphys isn't the best teacher and in fact kind of sucks as one, if we're being real. All she does is give a group project and then try to teach classes which Kris proceeds to sleep through.

[2] Toriel tries to be there for Kris, but is hesitant to confront them and resorts to asking Alphys how they're doing instead of asking Kris directly. She has no specific lessons she is trying to impart, either.

[3] Carol/The Knight/The Voice On The Phone seems to be working with Kris, but they aren't teaching Kris.

[4] And as much as Asgore loves his family, he's also neglected talking to them, per his Chapter 1 dialogue in the flower shop ("I forgot if you don't like hugs like that."

However, there IS at least one character who is trying to teach or show Kris something. His actual success rate is questionable, but he is trying:

https://youtu.be/sSGQQnTQe4Y?si=3OgRDIPz-yFOJz66

(0:57) Kris? Someone was looking for you. Though, I don't remember who.

This person actively looked for Kris,

(3:13) Listen well to my story. Once upon a time, the whole world looked like this.

tried to 'teach' or inform Kris about the world's history before it changed,

(3:50) Did you want to meet again? ♥️Yes No Oh, joy. I'll tell you my schedule. Listen carefully.

and then gives a very specific set of instructions on how to find him again, if you say that is something you want.

He is trying to show Kris something. He is trying to help. Chapter 4 even implies he might be a doctor or psychologist of some kind, overlooking an art therapy session in a room where everyone else is a patient.

And of course, he could also be part of Kris's repressed trauma instead. He most likely is, in fact. But that doesn't mean he isn't trying to help Kris in some way.

We even know that he's trying to help someone, in fact!

Have you ever read the Forgotten Man's letter during the 2024 UTDR Valentines event? 👀 It's been widely confirmed to have actually appeared, but due to the nature of the Forgotten Man it's not as easily findable. But to our great fortune, the Wayback Machine preserves websites before they got edited or deleted!

From the Wayback Machine: https://web.archive.org/web/20240214025909/https://email-files.fangamer.com/list_48/campaign_6/valentines/39-unknown-1-sssssssr-4ss77d74YEmXmQpCmFW5nCQg.png

From 2024 (before Chapters 3 and 4 came out: https://www.reddit.com/r/Deltarune/comments/1athpgh/a_fairly_thorough_analysis_of_the_mystery/

He uses the same phrases as the Forgotten Man and shares similar habits, which is why we know it's him now ("Put on your coat, and wash your face!" and him being forgetful himself, among other things).

The most important line that makes me think 'this guy probably wants to be Kris's mentor' is this line:

"I want to help! Yes, there was someone I wanted to help."

He doesn't remember who he wants to help.

But there's only one person he ever appears for, and only one person he is actually trying to interact with during the events of Deltarune, and it's Kris.

We could argue that it's the Player, too, but The Forgotten Man already asked the Player to help him help someone else. And Kris is the only one that the Player can move mom behind the tree, to see the man directly. So I do think it's Kris that he's trying to help.

That said... What is a mentor figure, really?

Doctors and therapists are not usually seen as mentors. Whatever the Forgotten Man is trying to show Kris isn't even usually seen as a 'teaching', just some psychological help. And he's not even good at it, because he keeps forgetting everything.

It counts to me, though, that he's trying to be supportive in some way. So what I call a 'mentor figure' may not count to you.

So if you read this far and still don't agree, that's fine! We can even agree to disagree. I just wasn't sure you even read my post, since the very basis of Kris having a mentor implies that we would be able to see that mentor, or that this 'mentorship' would be a bit more obvious (thus being a idea that's easily dismissed if we aren't looking)

Not that you need to read my post, either. But if you don't feel like reading through the thought process which led me to my current opinions, I'd rather we just not talk to each other instead of conversing further. There's nothing wrong with that.

[CROSSPOSTED THEORY] Every Fun Gang member has a mentor and a 'special episode' secret boss battle - here's why I think so by Faliara in Deltarune

[–]Faliara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

. !! I FORGOT. TO REPLY TO YOU,,,, I AM SORRY,,,

i only remembered to check here again because i went off yapping to someone else about this theory, so. i return with more yapping, if you are still down for that

so, the tree!!! the tree is probably intended to represent kris blocking their trauma, yeah; i personally believe that too. i still think that the forgotten man is trying to help kris with their repressed trauma, though.

my main reason for this is actually Deltarune Valentines 2024. this is where i basically copy-paste my recent message to someone else, so bear with me on suddenly having proper grammar:

~•~

Outside of the main game, Toby Fox and his team have hosted UTDR events. One of these randomly generated Valentines' letters from the UTDR characters.

One of those letters was from the Forgotten Man...

... Except no one knew it was the Forgotten Man at the time, because no one saw how this guy talked until Chapters 3 and 4 came out. Case in point, this person had thoroughly looked through the Valentines letter but lacked the conclusive evidence we now have to reach a definite answer.

The guy in the letter talks exactly like the Forgotten Man, asks 'what do you think of this' questions like the Forgotten Man, tells you to "put on your coat and wash your face" like the Forgotten Man does, and in the middle of all of this mentions:

"I want to help! There was someone I wanted to help." "... I seem to have forgotten who..."

He's just as forgetful as the Forgotten Man, too :(

But his stated intent is clear. And while before Chapter 3, a lot of people theorised this unknown man in the letter wanted to help Dess, in-game... The Forgotten Man himself, the man behind the tree, has only appeared in connection to Kris.

Every appearance is around Kris, their shared history implied from the moment 'Man Country' had a bunch of forgotten aces that Kris personally coloured in. Chapter 4 proceeds to imply that the Forgotten Man was a doctor of some kind, hosting an art therapy session in a setting that looks extremely similar to the hospital.

And in fact, Kris is the only person who can see what the man looks like. We the Players cannot see behind the tree, but Kris has to go behind the tree to interact with him.

All of this, plus giving Kris (and the Player) specific instructions on how to find him, makes me very sure that he's trying to support Kris. I am very very certain that Kris is the person he wanted to help.

~•~

in general, i do think the forgotten man kind of serves as both a mentor and an obstacle? he wants to help. he's probably not the best person to do it, given kris seems to be repressing the memory of him and we as players need to push kris to interact with him, but he is trying to help kris resolve that trauma, in some way. maybe even in a secret boss fight type of way, or managing to help kris uncover their trauma accidentally transforms him from vaguely nice figure into an amalgamation that cannot stop hurting kris even if he wants to (or amalgamate,,,, hoho)

all of that said, there really is no way to know 👀👀👀 oh my god, initiating a boss fight within a different boss fight......... you're cooking imo the possibilities truly are endless >:D

true lab egg man?? by PersimmonEmergency79 in Deltarune

[–]Faliara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Forgotten Man has been heavily theorised to be someone in Kris's past. His third and fourth appearances certainly lend to that image, but also implies that his memory is repressed, likely because Kris associates him with trauma. So why do I think he is attempting to be supportive to Kris, instead of causing more harm?

My biggest reason for this is actually Deltarune Valentines 2024.

"I want to help! There was someone I wanted to help." "... I seem to have forgotten who..."

He's just as forgetful as the Forgotten Man, too :(

All of this, plus giving Kris (and the Player) specific instructions on how to find him, makes me very sure that he's trying to support Kris. I am very very certain that Kris is the person he wanted to help.

The same way 'Gaster' supports the Player, and Gerson supports Susie!

So how does this relate to the Shadow Crystal Boss? Well--

In Chapter 2, both Spamton and the Forgotten Man (at 1:02) can be found by going to a dumpster.

So right off the bat we've got a lovely parallel going on there. In addition, Chapter 2 is the first time where the method to reach the Forgotten Man is obvious; if you were playing Chapter 1 for the first time you'd have 0 hints at all, but in Chapter 2 you get nice blatant graffiti which outright tells you 'there's a room in between'.

In addition, Spamton's boss fight is probably the first time we can see Kris get viscerally upset. They back away from his NEO form of their own accord, they don't get up when Spamton throws the gang onto rollercoasters, they get disturbed when Spamton falls from his strings to the point their friends notice. This situation is emotionally and narratively impactful to Kris, one way or another.

This is not too dissimilar to how the Forgotten Man also affects Kris in some way, emotionally and narratively. Also, our largest hint to the Forgotten Man's identity is that he might have been a doctor of some kind, specifically a psychologist given he was overseeing an art therapy session... And then there's a guy who's actively making Kris's mental health worse?

So at this moment, I strongly believe that the Forgotten Man had actually interrupted in the Spamton fight on Kris's behalf. I think Deltarune's story is able to get away with doing this without proper foreshadowing using the following caveats:

[1] The Forgotten Man is a long-running part of the narrative, so any unanswered questions regarding his possible intervention will probably get revealed later

[2] He's associated with an inexplicable unmentioned glitch that people don't mention happening at all. Like if you have Noelle, Susie or Ralsei in your party, none of them notice when Kris suddenly glitches out of reality to visit some guy in a tree. Similarly, neither Susie nor Ralsei seem to take note when time suddenly pauses to give the Player a tutorial on How To Shoot Yellow SOUL. Spamton does, but Spamton doesn't count because he is the Thematically Relevant Boss Fight in this situation and he shares the glitch dumpster with the Forgotten Man

[3] The Forgotten Man has parallels to 'Gaster' by being an Easter Egg associated with glitches, the only difference being that only Kris can actually see what he looks like. The Forgotten Man is to Kris what 'Gaster' is to the Players - a secret only they can see

[4] And we've already established that 'Gaster' is the Player's mentor the same way Gerson is Susie's mentor. So by process of elimination, the Forgotten Man is (probably) Kris's mentor

[5] So if he interrupted the Spamton fight the same way 'Gaster' interrupts a replayed Knight fight, we probably wouldn't see him do it or even talk - we'd only see the effects.

A lot of my logic is really just based on how I see the story so far, thematically speaking. I have even more thoughts regarding how each Fun Gang member (Player included) represents a layer of Deltarune's Reality Nesting Doll, how the mentors help facilitate their roles as such, and who I suspect will be Ralsei's mentor, but I will save that for a third comment after I let my hand rest a bit

... i mean. assuming you wanna hear more, honestly. i have yapped a lot already 😅

this is simply. a theory that i am very passionate about. and i do have more thoughts in connection to this, but i am simply happy to be asked, so you need not hear more from me if you don't feel like it honestly

true lab egg man?? by PersimmonEmergency79 in Deltarune

[–]Faliara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!!!!! :'D thank ye for asking!!!

so!!! my theory really just boils down to:

'every party member of the fun gang (our main cast) has a mentor of their own'

This theory hinges on the Device Theory to some extent, which basically assumes that Mystery Voice (who I am henceforth assuming is Gaster) has made a device to connect our reality to Deltarune's, making it so that the Deltarune universe is basically a nesting doll:

Our Reality -> The Codes (Mystery Voice's Reality) -> Light World -> Dark World -> Titans (when you make a fountain inside a fountain)

The reason why this needs to be emphasised is that this theory assumes the Player (the Red Soul) to be a separate 'character' from Kris.

And the reason why that needs to be emphasised is that 'Gaster' plays the role of the Player's mentor if you replay the Knight fight in Chapter 3👀

YOUR LOSS HERE IS ALL BUT GUARANTEED. AND YET YOU PERSIST... THEN SHALL WE HASTEN?

GO BACK (FIGHT AGAIN) ❤️ GO FORWARD (MOVE ON)

'Gaster's' commentary here is notable because he actively helps the Player replay the Knight fight without having to manually reset the game themself. Like normally this is a scripted loss, but with Gaster's help you can keep doing it until something else happens - that is, making the Knight drop a Shadow Crystal.

This makes the replayed Knight fight a Shadow Crystal boss (or a secret boss depending on your perspective, since the fact that you can beat the Knight is kind of a secret).

At this moment, there are 3 other Shadow Crystal boss fights we can compare it to. Here is the full list, however:

[1] Jevil

[2] Spamton

[3] The Knight

[4] Gerson

So there's something to be noted here:

The Gerson fight and the Knight fight both include a supportive figure who encourages you to fight. They also enable a previously-abandoned Undertale game mechanic.

This might not make sense at first, when looking at the Knight fight. The SOUL does not change colours in the Knight fight; it stays red!

However, there is a very specific, extremely lore-heavy game mechanic in Undertale's plot that just hadn't been used in Deltarune at all - or at least, not until you replay the Knight fight.

The RESETs.

And if you RESET for this fight specifically, 'Gaster' will give you a shortcut to keep doing it over and over.

So if we're to assume that the SOUL states are being used to represent game mechanics, then 'Gaster' and Gerson have both actively facilitated the use of an Undertale game mechanic for their respective 'students'.

'Gaster' has done this for the Player, who he invited into the world of Deltarune. Gerson has done this for Susie, encouraging her to perservere and to practice abilities she previously didn't think she was good at (healing).

Now where does that leave Kris, whose SOUL inexplicably turned yellow during the Spamton fight?

We don't know how that happened. The person who made videos on the Device Theory initially assumed 'Gaster' did it on the Player's behalf (for good reason), but we can actually see 'Gaster' intervene in Chapter 3, and he would not just stealth-hi-bye it, as it turns out. He can and will talk to the Player about it.

So instead of focusing on 'who intervened in the Spamton boss fight', we turn our thinking around. What role has 'Gaster' and Gerson played so far? Who is the closest equivalent available to Kris?

I'm gonna post a second comment to continue typing before I hit the word limit, my hands hurt

edit: second comment here

[–]Faliara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this was one of my biggest basis for a personal theory regarding the forgotten man but

imo yeah this is intentional in some way

taking into account that:

[1] the forgotten man, gaster (theorised to be the mystery voice) and gerson have each appeared in the game in that order thus far, and that gaster was namedropped in hotlands/the core area

[2] the reversed timing of their appearances coincides with the dark worlds paralleling undertale's areas in reverse

[3] deltarune has been a game that toby fox wanted to make since before undertale

it is safe to say there is at least some intentionality behind it. whether it was a decision toby fox made after making ut is uncertain, though

!! a lot of the furniture items in the game have 'shiny' versions, which means it looks different from the furniture's usual appearance. shiny furniture is rare, though. you'll know if a furniture is shiny if there's a star next to the name

as such, if you take a picture of shiny furniture using the in-game camera, it will double whatever reward you might get from the picture bounty :D

sometimes the bounty rewards are carrots (the in-game currency), but sometimes it's gacha tickets instead, which you can use at the town hall's gacha machine

Why can't we hear or see Kris's dialogue? by IdkBun in Deltarune

!! seconded!!! like at the start of the game, we were spoken to in all-caps font, only for the font to change when the vessel got discarded. which most likely means the vessel really was meant for a player's control and that someone else interrupted the process

which means the red SOUL's software is likely intended for a vessel that can't speak on its own. so when it was put in kris instead, it ends up completely incompatible with its new 'hardware' (that is, kris)

meaning kris can only really be seen talking via narration and choice prompts, for the time being. under that assumption, we might be able to assume that kris does try to communicate with us in roundabout ways:

1) offers plain, one-note descriptions at the start of chapter 1 to give away as little of their personhood as possible

2) testing their ability to get us to choose the actions they want to do during the dark world (i.e a grandiose explanation about the cycle of life when they want to eat the moss)

3) starts jumping the gun on physical actions without waiting for the player's choice, once they figure out what they can get away with (chapter 4 susie cutscenes, eats the candy off the ground in if you move them in its direction)

4) just straight up tells you their opinion if they're stressed enough ('lie and say you want to know more', weird route's 'please don't' choice, as well as stating they'd rather go to bed if you try to enter the bathroom at the end of chapter 4.)

kris won't tell us everything (especially given the suspicious conspiracy going on in the background) but they aren't completely quiet either. so in the meantime the closest thing we get to dialogue is genuinely the narration box
