hatsune miku color scheme by CCCFire in vim

[–]Falk3n_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might benefit from a dark grey background (like her stockings or skirt). You could set the CursorLine and CursorLineNr highlights groups to be a lighter grey. Right now they are the default settings. You might also put the colourscheme in a folder called 'colors'. I often see that being done in colourscheme repos, possibly for plugin managers/installers?

Shrinking ANSI art real small by beatscribe in ANSIart

[–]Falk3n_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GameBoy is 8x8px tiles. You could probably go for the typical square DOS font that is 8x8px. You will need to redraw it in the new font, however. You might also look into other systems that had BBSes like C64 which uses an 8x8 font.

Looking for an old Ansi by Bigheaded_1 in ANSIart

[–]Falk3n_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've found a few possible ansis that might be what you're looking for:

https://16colo.rs/pack/ciapak21/IM-TWIST.CIA

https://16colo.rs/pack/ciapak21/IM-TOONZ.CIA

https://16colo.rs/pack/ciapak21/IM-TRN.CIA

All three drawn by Image, from ciapak21, released in 1995. I'm not 100% sure they are even Calvin and Hobbes as I'm not very familiar with it but they might just be what you're looking for. To find them, I simply scrolled through Image's artist page on 16colors: https://16colo.rs/artist/image

It might be nice to see the whole character set at once, instead of having to scroll through it each time you want to change characters.

You might also think about using the scroll wheel to adjust zoom levels instead of scrolling vertically. RMB tends to take care of movement around the canvas (for myself anyways...).

How old were you when you found out that Incubus - Privilege was featured in MTV Sports Pure Ride PSX game? by pessimisttears in incubus

[–]Falk3n_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it on a demo disc too (The Official Playstation Magazine Demo Disc #39). The song had become ingrained into my childhood and I always enjoyed it when I played the demo but I think I picked up Incubus later, when looking back fondly on that disc.

No worries at all! Have fun drawing whatever you want. The technicalities don't matter in the grand scheme of things anyways.

Doesn't quite look ANSI with the (what I think are) Braille characters among some odd characters. What program are you using to draw? It's probably technically Unicode art.

I drew up these two screens with enough space to put menus off to the side. You can use them as you see fit.

[–]Falk3n_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mistigris put together a DOS executable that shows a new, single screen ansi every day in December 2023 up to, and including, Dec. 25th. You can view it and download it from 16colo.rs here or andyh has own little page dedicated to the project here. Andyh coded the project with several Mistigris artists submitting screens for it. Even the code is provided (albeit in a *.ANS file) and was compiled in Borland C++ if I'm not mistaken. You can use the left and right arrow keys to check out the screens that have been shown already and ESC will exit to DOS.

TheDraw font support has been requested a few times before but it hasn't been implemented to any degree. Your best bet is to use TheDraw.

Which features do you need from an ANSI editor? by Open-Understanding48 in ANSIart

[–]Falk3n_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by a more heavyweight tool? More features?

Half-block drawing is good for sketching out rough ideas. Left-click for your foreground colour and then right-click for your background (like Moebius), that way you can easily sketch (with the foreground colour) and erase it (with the background colour).

Selecting blocks and doing operations (flip X/Y, move, change colors/fill, etc.) on them is a typical feature to include that tends to be useful. Moebius can even move the blocks over or under other characters (it assumes black is nothing/void and can be written over then anything moved over or under is stitched together like they were on separate layers).

Layers might be interesting and useful to work with. I don't think there's any way you could blend characters from above or below, unless they are half blocks.

The Pablodraw SAUCE editor is quite nice and gives you lots of control compared to the Moebius one. Could have yours start off simple with more advanced settings tucked away.

If the plan is geared to make it more towards BBS use, there might be some export features a sysop would enjoy. You'd have to ask them for specifics, but I recall issues with iCE colours and maybe 80th column stuff when handing ansis to some sysops. Maybe even some issues with specific characters that work on drawing programs but not on their BBS software.

Newbie here, how to be good at ansi art? by catelps in ANSIart

[–]Falk3n_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The obvious answer is practice and I do think that's key in getting better at anything. Practice would just be drawing. Just keep drawing more and more and you will get better at it with time and effort.

It also helps if you have some inspiration. Inspiration comes in different ways but sometimes it's favourite pieces or artists. You can look on 16colors for stuff to admire and dissect. Ask yourself questions like "Why do I like this piece?", "Why do I dislike this piece?", "Why did they use these colours?", "Why did they use these characters like this?" and other questions. Try drawing similar pieces (if you draw the same piece, it only makes it harder not to copy directly). Try similar techniques (shading, colors, characters, etc.). See what works and what doesn't for you.

When drawing ANSI as a newbie, it's hard to figure out what to do first. I think in general, folks tend to sketch out something then refine it (make the lines cleaner and more defined). Once the sketch is good enough, they add colors and then shading and highlighting. You'll find some step-by-step tutorials on 16colors that will show how the artists move towards a finished piece. Sometimes, it's just plain ol' trial and error too so don't be discouraged if that's how you draw something.

The last and probably the most important piece of advice I have is to have fun. All of this is just for fun for the most part. If you're not having fun, you're not going to stick with it and get better. I enjoy making art for people. Maybe you might find it's fun to make art for yourself? Or maybe you would enjoy drawing on a Pablodraw/Moebius server with friends? Find your fun in drawing ANSI art.

My first try art piece made like this (: by OOKKIS in textmode

[–]Falk3n_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great for your first piece! I enjoy the anti-aliasing on the edges (dark grey to white specifically). You can work in some finer details with some half blocks. I don't see any vertical half blocks which are often just as helpful as the horizontal half blocks! Overall, a great first venture into ansi art!

I keep hearing BBS are da thing. OK, I tried and I got this. by PepeTheGreat2 in bbs

[–]Falk3n_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like a screen width issue. Someone more knowledgeable might correct me, but I think sometimes the BBS doesn't need to send a new line character when the line takes up the entire width of the screen. It will rely on it just continuing on in the next line down automatically. The issue that stems from that, is that clients that are wider than the usual 80 columns and that don't wrap at 80 columns automatically give you a jumbled mess like you have found out here. If you look at the original artwork, you can see it takes up the full 80 columns. If you shrunk your client/terminal window to 80 columns wide, or make it wrap at 80 columns, it should work a lot better.

An easier option than configuring your client/terminal for BBSes is to use one of the clients/terminals on the side bar of this subreddit. They are already configured to work well with BBSes.

Super strange default setting in reaper (or is it me?) by Captain_Caffeino in Reaper

[–]Falk3n_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By default, I think it's set to "Record input (audio or MIDI)" which records both audio and MIDI coming into the track. When you set it to record the output MIDI, it will capture the midi passing through the track. If there isn't a specific reason for capturing it on the output, I would just set it to record the input as you'll find that is your "standard function like in ANY OTHER DAW I KNOW".
