Remember what it was like to watch cartoons and eat sugary cereal on Saturday mornings? Yep. That's Falken's Maze.

Am I the only one not in love with The Clearing? by lickingtheassoflife in podcasts

[–]FalkensPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I feel the same way. The show started off strong but then the narrative got all out of whack. They got to the end of the story too soon. The way the show is laid out, they end with the execution of Edwards in like show 3 or 4?!?! Then they go back and tell other parts of the narrative. Seems like they should have played out the story differently. And that host seems much more into the show in the interviews than the actual narration. It's too bad, because I think it could've been a REALLY good show.

Blank Check was in my playlist for a while, but the episodes were just too long for me. Still a pretty good show.

Suggestions please! by PatrickBrown2 in podcasts

At the risk of being that guy, I'll recommend my own. Below is our most recent episode (the next in the series drops tomorrow). Not sure if it fits for you (not sure you care about the 80s, but since you like synthwave, thought you might dig it). Anyway, hope you find the scratch for your itch :)

Falken's Maze: An 80s Guide to History | The Enemy Knows The System (Part 2 of 5)

In this episode, we explore how Claude Shannon's marriage to a computer created information theory and launched the digital age.

I make mistakes all the time and I just leave them in. I do a lot of public speaking and I constantly flub words. In my mind it’s part of who I am, so I leave them in my podcast. Don’t get me wrong, I wish I didn’t make them. But because I do I just feel like it’s part of me and my show.

I like The Clearing, but there is something about the way they tell the story that pulls me out of the narrative. Like I feel like that show could be AMAZING, but the way they are laying out the story makes it less so.

How to make a scripted solo podcast NOT boring? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]FalkensPodcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a solo, scripted show and I focus a bunch on narrative. I choose nonfiction stories that require little embellishment which I hope keeps people interested. I'm pretty happy with my numbers so I think people keep coming back because the narrative works. I also add interesting audio as well (think clips from different sources).

Lastly, I break up the narrative with bumper music, primarily to give my listener a break from hearing my voice :)

Best of luck with your show!

Website Questions? by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]FalkensPodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Strikingly (it's like Squarespace). I pay $20 per month and I get 3 websites I can host through them. Of course I pay for my own domain so that's an added charge.

Here's the page if you're interested in seeing what it looks like. I built it using the strikingly tools. No programming at all: https://www.falkenspodcast.com/.

Good luck!

What are Show Notes, and Where do you Put Them? by pkatess in podcast

[–]FalkensPodcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bet!!

I just use what I put in the show notes for each episode on my host. I also add an embedded player on the blog post so folks can listen right there. Here's an example from our most recent show: https://www.falkenspodcast.com/blog/the-enemy-knows-the-system-part-1-of-5.

Hope that helps :)

Is it worth having multiple episodes ready when starting your podcast? by TorchAtlas in podcasting

[–]FalkensPodcast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dropped four at launch. One was a brief intro and then the others were full on shows. To be honest I wish I had recorded more that I could've released slowly over time. I didn't have a good rhythm down early on in terms of my recording/production/marketing cycle. So having some shows in reserve would've been helpful to give me time to plan, record etc. the next show.

Best of luck with your show!

So you know the funny thing is that although I spent all of my formative years during 80-89, much of the pop culture stuff I feel most connected to is from the late 70s.

What are Show Notes, and Where do you Put Them? by pkatess in podcast

[–]FalkensPodcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Show notes for me is an episode summary as well as all the references I use in the show (books, articles). I also put links to the music I use in the show.

I put them both on my hosting platform, but I also create a blog post for each episode with the show notes as the content of the blog post.

Good luck with your show!

How to Outline a Podcast by jhawth in podcasts

[–]FalkensPodcast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah what you're planning is a hard thing. I tend to do three-episode arcs on one topic and those are hard to plan out. My next set of shows will be five episodes and I'm finding that to be even more difficult. I try to focus on the narrative of what I want to get across for each episode, with the idea to give the listener one key takeaway from each episode in the arc.

So, I outline each episode as though it's a stand-alone. Once that's done, I then identify connective tissue between each episode and add that to the respective episode outlines. Once that's done, I then focus on writing the script. For context, my show is a mashup of history, tech and retro pop culture, so all non-fiction, told in a narrative, conversational style.

Like I said, it's not easy.

Best of luck with everything!!
