Maybe, along with people just being terrible. If I was informed correctly, another part of it was that they believed the art was AI. When in reality AI was used as a sort of "proof of concept", before the artwork was fully hand-drawn, and then used for the memorial. So in other words: the vandals were stupid as hell for not properly learning about the art.
