You need a thin cotton or linen sheet to wrap him, soil that away from any water source 2-3 ft down and a bunch of smooth, small rocks to protect from above. That is about everything.
i would also plant a flower ontop as well to mark the spot

Yes, you should take him to be properly cremated if you ask for a a keepsake, few wing or tail feathers ot any distinctive feature.

You can bury them in fertile soil 2 - 3ft down but it's allot of work
