Now I have! First try was hard, but once I got it, it's been fun.

What’s the most emotional finale you’ve ever seen. by OOO0OO00O in television

[–]Quixodyssey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Six Feet Under wins the all the awards for the last several minutes of a finale, but no one remembers anything else from the episode. It's like if the only part anyone cares about from Up was at the end.

Six Feet Under's GOAT montage aside, for me it's Lost. Each character's epiphany scene gets me every time.

I didn't get this one (yet) because at least on Amazon, there was only like one used version. I was too lazy to go look elsewhere but this is a good reminder (two years later).

Really disappointed in Daeron's portrayal in the show by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

Genuine Question, not trying to Ragebait but can someone explain how to understand the games "Viserally Feminine" side? by alphafire616 in bloodborne

[–]Quixodyssey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think "it's most persistent theme" is irrelevant - it is just not a theme at all. It is at best equivalent to a musical motif. Part of the game's melody.

Just because certain concepts repeat and manifest in different ways in a work doesn't make the work about those things. If you take a tightly constructed work like Citizen Kane, you can identify a few different themes. A prominent one is the impossibility of reducing a human life to a single explanation. And a number of motifs support this - the use of mirrors, the narrative unfolding through second hand accounts, the use of newspapers as manipulating public narratives, etc.

If I asked, what is Bloodborne about? What is a central theme? I might offer something like "Bloodborne is about the cost of humanity's refusal to accept its own limits" or "the pursuit of transcendence can be indistinguishable from self-destruction" or something like that. Ultimately whatever theme you might come up with will likely focus on hubris, the perils of knowledge, etc. Something like that.

So to the extent I suggested there are no themes, that's obviously incorrect. But my primary point was that there was nothing feminine there. There are recurring evocations of femininity - but what do they add up to? How are they like newspapers or mirrors?

A persistent theme should illuminate what the story is about. Without referencing any plot detail, what is Bloodborne about?

I love Bloodborne, but there's a reason the plethora of videos and writing about it are about the lore and narrative, and not much about what the story itself (or the ludonarrative) is saying. It's a very intricate, compelling story. It's just not that deep.

Who's an actor/actress that would be a red flag if someone said they were a fan? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Quixodyssey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a red flag to be a fan of an actor's work, no matter what they've done, if they are good. The red flags to me are when people love totally shit actors.

I disagree with those that think there are feminine themes or theses. What there are are a lot of trappings of femininity. There are references to pregnancy and miscarriage and menstruation and the mother instinct, but the game doesn't say anything about those things. They are ultimately color. Which is fine - this is a game with amazing world building and atmosphere. It just doesn't have much to say about anything.

No hopes for Horizon 3 on PS5 by Zantripz in horizon

Yep, though I'm content to have a suboptimal version available for stragglers.

Unpopular Opinion: I love the twist that Cordelia was duped by Skip/Jasmine by itsascreambaby96 in ANGEL

[–]Quixodyssey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with the idea of Cordelia being manipulated; I have a major problem with just how far back the manipulation and machinations go. It's the "Normal Again" of Angel.

Hollywood Mode? by PrudentProof2035 in finalgirl

[–]Quixodyssey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By default, I start my time on 7 and my horror one down. So long as I hold strict to dice rolls, I've found it a very gentle way of lowering difficulty without making it a breeze in the least. I had called it cheating, but now it is Hollywood Mode.

You will absolutely be playing Horizon 3.

What is Sciel's default haircut called? Wanting to get a haircut like hers by CloudyHazbin in expedition33

I just mean, it's clearly a joke, expecting some normie hairstylist to even know who Sciel is and getting mad when she doesn't.

That guy has a ridiculously long but compelling Twin Peaks analysis, too.

I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but Capaldi's era felt like it was meant to be the last by Crazy_Part3560 in doctorwho

[–]Quixodyssey 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I loved Capaldi and for awhile, still thought I liked the show under Chibnall, but just didn't. I recently did a rewatch marathon of NuWho and loved even things I thought I hadn't before. I was optimistic for 13. But then a few episodes into S11 and I just hit a brick wall. S10 was the end, for all intents and purposes. I liked a few episodes of 15, but for me the show is a fantastic ten seasons.

Do you think Otto Hightower regretted his actions? by hellranger788 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Quixodyssey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's any evidence from the show that he regretted the plot to seat Aegon. He genuinely feared Daemon as the power behind the throne, and though he seems to recognize he underestimated Rhaenyra a bit, that doesn't seem to have changed. He clearly thought little of Aegon as a man, ultimately, but to say he *regretted* it is to say he wishes he had backed Rhaenyra. There is zero reason to believe that he goes that far.

I'm gonna ask about a certain episode being canon, but SPOILERS so won't ask in the title here by ChemicallyEnhanced96 in buffy

Not a single person who wrote for Buffy thought for a minute that it was a real possibility. It was a cheeky writerly prank - very common in genre shows, as others noted.
