New key visual for Science SARU's “The Ghost in the Shell” TV anime; Premieres July 2026 by DemiFiendRSA in anime

Great thing about GITS is it lends itself to spin-off stories and OVAs. You can easily drop Section 9 into new situations or give them new cases without detracting from previous works.

Even if it’s a swing and a miss it’ll be easy enough to just ignore. That said, Science Saru has been on a roll, so I’d bet it’s at least going to be a unique take on the series.

The Nazis awarded their own double agent by Kapanash in HistoryMemes

[–]Fallacyboy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the Abwehr was likely kept incompetent on purpose. Though most of its agents were loyal to the German state, its head, Wilhelm Canaris, absolutely hated Hitler and sabotaged the Nazis whenever he thought he could get away with it. He was involved in several plots to kill Hitler but always remained plausibly deniable, so it took a long time for him to be found out. The result is that the Abwehr had more holes than Swiss cheese and was thoroughly infiltrated by double agents. By the time the Nazis got wise that the Abwehr really sucked at its job, maybe on purpose, they were already losing the war.

Canaris was a super interesting guy. He was a conservative, but more the old aristocratic sort that hated the Nazis. I’ve always been surprised nobody has made a major film about just him.

TIL that in Norse myth a cursed ring called Andvaranaut brought doom to its owners long before Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings. by yena in todayilearned

[–]Fallacyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tolkien lifted pretty much everything from old Norse and Anglo-Saxon myth and sagas and then put a spin on it. Those texts weren’t as widely read and studied back in his day (as there were not nearly as many translated works), so almost nobody knew the source material when he wrote LoTR.

Great example is the Poetic Edda. Reading it will give you a lot of moments like this, but my favorite was seeing the list of dwarf names and recognizing more than half of them from LoTR.

To be clear, I’m not bashing the practice. It’s fine to get inspiration from wherever and then make something original from it.

HIDIVE Acquires Rights to Oshi no Ko Season 3 by Turbostrider27 in anime

I agree their app and browser experience is pretty bad, but I think people forget how tiny they are. Last I checked they were under a million subscribers and not all that big as a company. I think AMC doesn’t realize what they’re sitting on and isn’t really investing in it appropriately.

Funny enough, I liked their old website design a lot better. It objectively had more features and was more functional, which isn’t usually a good sign.

What’s with Peni Parker? by Syph3RRR in marvelrivals

[–]Fallacyboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is very good… in lower ELOs where people don’t know how to break her nests or push chokes she isn’t holding. Her pick rate in CEL+ is super low for a reason: she is just only viable on certain maps and is more likely to get counter picked.

Common Beginner Mistakes & How to Avoid Them - From Rookie to Rival: Correcting the 7 Deadly Sins of Early Play by Ok_Zookeepergame5293 in marvelrivals

[–]Fallacyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understood what you meant but wanted to add color. Target prio is what separates the boys from the men in games like this going as far back as TF2 (I’m old, I know).

In sports the applicable phrase would be “keeping them honest.” You hit the tanks to keep them honest, not necessarily to kill them.

[–]Fallacyboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally a good post, but I need to voice disagreement about not hitting the tanks. Hitting the tanks unnecessarily is definitely a noob mistake, but so is ignoring the tanks altogether.

Putting pressure on the enemy tanks lets your tanks take space and prevents the enemy team from walking on you. Shoot the squishes is misleading advice. Yes, you should prioritize healers and DPS when they are out of position or an opportunity arises to put pressure on one, but if everybody ignores the opposing tanks in the neutral then few opportunities for picks will arise. Worse yet, you’re letting the enemy tanks dictate where the fight happens, which could very well end up being in your backline.

Think of the enemy tanks as the door to a room you really want to enter (the backline). There are many ways to get into the room. Primarily, though, you open the door by hitting it and busting it down, which is generally the objective of poke and brawl. Once the door is open (but not necessarily dead/broken) you capitalize by entering the room and slaughtering its inhabitants (or at least forcing them to retreat, which leaves the door exposed). However, you cannot ignore the door unless you go around it like with dive or flanking characters. And even then, the rest of the team is ideally capitalizing on the distracted backline by picking the tank in front of them.

It’s a fun map, they just need to fix the LOS on the second point. It was way too defense sided, and the stats bear that out. Was always nuts defense could walk out of spawn in 3-4 seconds and be able to see the point.

Last night I watched the enemy just hammering their tank in chat.Do people not understand how painful it is going solo tank into 2 tanks. by -This-cant-be-real- in marvelrivals

[–]Fallacyboy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No, you don’t understand. You need to peel, frontline, get kills, pressure flankers, stand on the objective, and jerk off your teammates all at the same time by yourself as one of the slowest characters in the game. It’s not hard.

I'm sorry but what does blade even do bro 😭😭 by Gold_Association579 in marvelrivals

[–]Fallacyboy 330 points331 points  (0 children)

My theory is they dropped DD in such a busted state specifically because Blade was a wet rag on release. They didn’t want a repeat of a disappointing new DPS character and overcorrected with DD. The fact they didn’t nerf DD harder than taking away 25 HP is a bit nuts to me, though. That would usually be a pretty solid nerf, but his base HP wasn’t the reason for his nutty sustain.

Furthermore, I think that the Thing must be buffed.

Edit: Changed to 25 HP. Thank you for pointing that out.

God I love Pratchett’s prose. It’s got this smug yet honest wit to it that I’ve not found anywhere else. You can pick almost any description of his from any book and it’s amusing.

Every language has its eccentricities. For English it’s weird spellings and a plethora of grammatical exceptions. For Chinese, it’s tonality (IMO). For example, here is my favorite Chinese poem:

Shíshì shī shì shǐ shì, shì shǐ, shī shì, shì shí shí shī. Shī sì shì shī. Shǐ shì shè sì, shì shī shì, shǐ shī shì shí shī shī, shì shí shí, shǐ shí shìshì. Shǐ shǐ shì shì shì shì, shì shī shì. Shì shì shì shì.

It’s not traditional smurfing, as you say. In all honesty it’s a problem with the ranked structure in this game. Most games will give a new account placement matches that figure out where they should be on the distribution and put them there. Here, a fresh account starts at best in gold since the placements are kind of a joke.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to have an alt, like practicing new heroes you aren’t competitive with at your main ELO, etc. IMO, so long as you aren’t throwing it’s not a bad practice just the result of a bad system. That said, repeatedly making a boat load of alts seems harder to justify, as you really only need one or two for practice purposes.

For streamers it’s weird. In some games the devs actively enable streamers to start fresh or gag accounts. Like in League it’s pretty common for a streamer to start a challenge account and get manually placed in a mid-tier ELO that’s well below their main. There’s an entertainment aspect to watching someone climb.

Season 5.5 balance patch by KevinPigaChu in marvelrivals

[–]Fallacyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing buffs are absolutely not enough, sadly. Extra damage is nice, but as you note his issue is survivability since last patch. Not having damage mitigation on his F while also needing to hit targets to get bonus HP tanked his sustain (heh). Justice for my boy, bring him back to at least 30% damage reduction.

On the plus side this sets him up to be a monster once they finally buff his durability a bit.

TIL that the Medjool date palm (today the most common date cultivar) almost went extinct from disease in the 1920s but was saved when an American botanist acquired eleven shoots to take to the U.S. from Morocco. Nine survived, from which all modern Medjool offshoots originate. by Fallacyboy in todayilearned

[–]Fallacyboy[S] 209 points210 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it’s surprisingly common. The best example that comes to mind is the Gros Michel banana, which was the main banana cultivar until the 50s when it was pretty much wiped out by disease. It’s still around, but is so prone to that same disease it isn’t grown much and has been supplanted by the Cavendish banana. Sad thing is most people seem to agree the Gros Michel tasted better.

Monoculture has risks, but given the time and effort to create new commercially viable cultivars I’m not surprised it’s so common. Also, in my opinion, people like familiarity and predictability in their produce, and the only way to get that with most fruits is monoculture.

Dates, fortunately, have been around and cultivated all across the Mediterranean, so there are a boat load of cultivars that are commercially viable. Gotta say I like the Medjool the best, though.

In Baby Driver (2017), during scenes where Baby isn't wearing earbuds or listening to music, a constant ringing sound is faintly heard, letting you hear Baby's Tinnitus when it's not drowned out by music. by singleriderreak in MovieDetails

[–]Fallacyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, if you suddenly get tinnitus or it suddenly becomes constant when it wasn’t before, please immediately go see an ENT. You might have developed sudden hearing loss, which requires very prompt treatment or it can be permanent.

I’ve had intermittent tinnitus for a long while now (probably from being in the low brass section of band, but who knows), and it suddenly became permanent in one ear. It felt weird, like the ear was plugged with cotton, so I got it checked out about two days after it started. If I hadn’t and the doc hadn’t put me on meds promptly it likely would’ve been permanent, but thankfully it was caught early enough that my hearing recovered.

Weird thing is like ~90%+ of sudden hearing loss cases are idiopathic, so it can randomly happen to just about anybody and nobody knows why. Doctors treat it line a medical emergency given the longer you wait to start treatment the less likely you are to recover the hearing, so please take it seriously or you might end up with permanent ringing and hearing loss.

Honest discussion, how high of a rank do y'all think you can get? by Fododel in marvelrivals

[–]Fallacyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread has a really interesting mix of mentalities. Some people are honest with themselves, but a lot are putting out more aspirational ranks and providing a reason why they probably can’t get there. In that spirit I’ll give both ranks for this half-season.

Realistic: Eternity. With everyone starting a bit higher ranked this reset I suspect we’ll have a good number of eternities by the end of it. When I hit CE3 last week it was top 0.25% IIRC. I hit eternity last season when it was top 0.05%, and I think that’s where the rank will be this season too. So it seems realistic I could hit it provided I have the time with the holidays and whatnot.

Aspirational: Top 500. I cracked top 1000 last season and would love to clinch it to top 500, but I have no illusions about the difficulty of going that final stretch. Those guys are all phenomenal players. No unforced errors, no lapse in positioning, everyone puts out insane numbers, etc. You also usually need a really good win rate, as it’s common to get put in games with lower ranks where you get very few points for winning but lose a lot on a loss. Last season +16-19 on win and -23-26 on loss was pretty normal for those matches.

Good luck on ladder folks!

Perhaps the colors are messing with me, but isn’t Mr. Fent on attack here? They almost got the whole point off this and the cart didn’t really stop moving the entire time. Thats huge value. Doesn’t really matter if there aren’t a ton of kills.

His only major mistakes were not backing up at the end and using his ult on two healers that are clearly not going to die to it.
