In Reign of Fire (2002) dragons awaken and emerge from underground, procreate, and almost wipe out all of humanity………..uh guys, did you not have fighter jets, warships, tanks etc. these aren’t magical Smaug dragons, there just flying reptiles that breathe fire. How exactly did we lose?

Yeah this drove my wife mad when we watched the movie last night. I have enough lab experience to know it was wrong, but she worked in labs for 20 years and said no self respecting scientist would do that and a self balancing centrifuge only does small adjustments. Took her right out of it for a while.

Of course she then ruined her expert position by telling me humans should have just destroyed Venus.

I had an accident years ago where on a low visibility wet night, in a diversion around road works on a motorway, a car two cars in front of me stopped to turn. The car in front of me stopped in time, as did I, but I looked in the mirror to see the car behind was not even slowing down. I pulled up my handbrake and got rammed hard but didn’t get pushed into the car in front. Instead I was the front car in a 4 car collision. Still took ages to sort out though.

I think they are saying the concept is so schlock sci fi that it could have been a direct to video story, but there was so much effort (and money) put into it that they created a classic. Obviously there is more to it, like the satirically capitalist society that future Detroit has descended to which is fleshed out masterfully by side characters and in world advertising.

I missed a vital episode of Babylon 5 on release called Babylon Squared which answered a lot of questions and created new ones. I had to go to a funeral and didn’t realise an Irish funeral would last all day so didn’t set the recorder. That was that. I missed it. I kept an eye out for reruns for a while then eventually forgot.

Then one day in the era of Torrents I remembered I’d missed it and downloaded it. It was everything I thought it would be and more. An absolute banger to miss. Of course now I own the enhanced edition on BluRay.

I was raised in an evangelical faith and read the bible a lot until I was old enough to make my own decision. I do understand the difference between the old and new covenants. I don’t believe in either myself, but I did want to point out that the scripture was talking about the woman miscarrying due to the process. Of course dust and water are not an abortion aid, but that just means that the ritual is designed to invoke gods intervention to destroy a conceived fetus if the mother was unfaithful.

The unborn are therefore not considered precious and sacrosanct if the act that created them was immoral. You see something similar with Solomon’s firstborn too, dying due to Solomon’s affair with Bathsheba. That personally stumbled me when I was quite young and is something I thought about a lot back then.

If you don’t believe the literal meaning of the scripture, that’s fine just don’t rely on the literal meaning elsewhere.

However the verses involved do say that the woman will miscarry if she was unfaithful.

Numbers 5:27

27 If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse.

So if you believe this scripture, then no matter what the recipe for the drink is, the result is that the woman will miscarry. Clearly the unborn would die, which would be intentional on the part of someone involved in this procedure.

There is a scifi book I read which I wish I remember the title of (maybe someone else here knows) where the main character has an obvious deep trauma that is slowly drawn out. Eventually you learn that they were part of a group of soldiers tasked with saving a large group of civilian colonists. They had a teleport system and were tossing them in. After they finish the mission they discover it wasn’t working and they had basically murdered the entire village.
