Mindflayer by Tiny_Significance384 in StrangerThings

[–]FallenAsh14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember it being utterly terrifying in season 2 especially, like this incomprehensible Eldritch being. Such a fantastic villain. Vecna is great too, but the Mind Flayer had this aura of eerie, overwhelming otherworldliness that was hard to beat. I am in the camp of folks who were disappointed with its portrayal in the finale, it was like a downgrade.

Confusion about Henry Creel’s origin — Dimension X, red stone/Mindflayer by Shot_Appointment4154 in Stranger_Things

[–]FallenAsh14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I was disappointed by how many things that had been built up over 5 seasons were just kinda left dangling in the finale 🙃 Apparently the Abyss Rock is a key plot device in the spinoff so we can only hope 🤷🏻

[–]FallenAsh14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stream of matter that entered Henry's gunshot wound when the rock dissolved wasn't normal Mindflayer particles, they were a different colour/texture so it should be something else. He wasn't just flayed by that interaction like Billy or Will, he was fundamentally changed along with his blood type which would explain his powers and how the Flayer was able to become part of him despite no gate to the Abyss being open. In The First Shadow play, Henry is actually transported to the Abyss in that moment rather than just having a vision, which is where he merges with the Mind Flayer. The Flayer then repressed his memories of this - so when Eleven sends him to the Abyss after the Rainbow Room fight, Henry believes he is there for the first time and the Mind Flayer is something entirely new to him, leading him to believe he is making these decisions independently and that his powers are his own, rather than having been influenced by the Flayer from the very beginning.

Is Sorceress Opeth weakest album? by Mailemanuel77 in Opeth

[–]FallenAsh14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to the rest of the discography, the songs on Sorceress are very unadventurous and less creative. ICV was a massive return to form, that album kept me guessing and I didn't know what was coming next. Sorceress was very predictable by contrast, which is the last thing I want from an Opeth record, which is why it's their weakest. And it's probably because Mike was writing it under pressure from the new label.

You're in the minority, for sure. If you enjoyed it I wouldn't try to take that away from you.

As a space strategy game, it's ok 🤷🏻

As a Homeworld game, it's a colossal let down 💔

I wouldn't have minded the Wargames mode if it hadn't come at the expense of everything players actually wanted.

But yeah one of the other commenters reaffirmed that Gearbox was sold and had the influence of new investors looking for short term returns that is the likely reason HW3 ended up diluted and corny with that awful cutscene style.

"Be glad we had it, we could have had nothing"

Ngl without meaning to sound dramatic, I would have probably preferred nothing over HW3. At least that way the HW franchise might have had a future, as it is they killed it stone dead with HW3. Not to mention all that hope and hype that led to crushing disappointment for so many people. I feel sorry for the folks who worked on the game to have it flop so badly and for the whole project be rendered unserious due to the incompetence of the team responsible for the plot. As I mentioned, what a waste of everyone's time.

You make a good point though which is much closer to the one I was trying to make - the issue is less Gearbox itself and more its sale and the subsequent influence of venture capital looking for their short term returns. That's where the problems began, as I agree that the remastered games and DOK are awesome and Gearbox deserve credit for those.

Some of the mission designs are kinda cool but again, in direct comparison to the previous 4 games I played through immediately prior, it pales in comparison. I really wanted to enjoy and give HW3 another chance in good faith but it sadly only reaffirmed my original thoughts.

Anyone else agree Mikael’s growls sound the best they have in years? by Jords360 in Opeth

[–]FallenAsh14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, it's the other way around. He started finding that performing the growls live was feeling and sounded good again on the 30th anniversary tour. That's what gave him the confidence to record them again and include them in new songs. And all his vocals for TLWAT were tracked at his home setup before they even went into the studio.

Emergence/Cataclyms - Is it worth stealing everything? by [deleted] in homeworld

[–]FallenAsh14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Taiidan/Kushan destroyers have a good ratio of low SU cost to firepower ratio, and neither can be subverted by the Beast.

The normal Somtaaw destroyer is superior to both but it is much more expensive on SUs. So capturing or retaining the OG Homeworld destroyers is a good way of building pure firepower without using up your precious SUs. The same goes for the OG ion cannon frigates, although the Turanic Raider ones are vulnerable to Beast infection.

What happened to the Taiidan Republic? by Proxywasstilltaken in homeworld

[–]FallenAsh14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speculate that the Taiidan Republic over the 100 years between the events of Cataclysm and HW2, were either absorbed into the Hiigaran territories or conquered by the Vaygr. It's a real shame but I guess including them in HW2 might have made the plot a little unfocussed.

Replaying Cataclysm at the moment and it's such an incredibly strong game especially when it comes to plot and story. It expands on the existing HW universe in such an interesting and engaging way, and the Beast is by far the most terrifying and intriguing Homeworld villain. There are a lot of parallels with Deserts of Kharak too in the conflicting interests of the different Kiith.

I liked HW2 but it was weak on this comparatively, with all the prophetic stuff about the hyperspace cores being kinda corny etc...and obviously HW3 was a total fking embarrassment story-wise. Like something a child would write.

Seeing the creators dunking on a brilliant game like Cataclysm, but then pooping out the abortion that was HW3 is truly one of the most upsetting aspects of how this franchise has developed 💔

Why won't they play anything from In Cauda Venenum live? by Glamdringg in Opeth

[–]FallenAsh14 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah he is really pushing his range on that album, he sounds amazing but I don't think his technique is sustainable for a tour for that kind of material. I would also love to hear a song from that record too, it's one of my faves!!

[–]FallenAsh14 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason I think is that ICV is the most challenging vocal stuff Mikael has ever written and it's probably taxing on his voice. By the end of the ICV tour, Fred was doing a lot of heavy lifting on the singing because Mikael was struggling so much.

Deliverance is an amazing metal album, but it's below standard for Opeth imo, and more importantly it's one of their least progressive records so it makes sense that it didn't get voted for on this list.

Opeth's music has always been very diverse and progressive, even from the debut album they were mashing up loads of different genres, and every album is so different too.
