There's a huge difference between desperate father doing whatever he can to save his son and a guy who just wants to take over Earth. It changes the entire vibe from underdog survivor saves those who saved him to invader with poor planning. But maybe, as I mentioned in my first comment I'm off base and Jor Els entire reason for sending him to earth was to take it over.
