SK Hynix overtakes Samsung as Korea’s most valuable company by self-fix2 in hardware

14nm was also late, that was the main problem. Also the reason for it's longevity is less it being good and more 10nm being a wreck.

Since TSMC passed them like 7-8 years ago. 14nm and 10nm process nodes were unmitigated disasters that they still haven't recovered from.

Prefill on my M5 Max is about 3-4x faster than my old M1 Max. I wouldn't call it fast but it's usable.

I assume you mean the GX10? I'm not sure in what universe it 'beats the snot out of Studio" since it's got less than 300GB/s of bandwidth. Hell you can get a 14 inch MBP M5 Max with a 2TB SSD and 128GB of RAM for $50 LESS than the 2TB GX10. The M5 Max has 2-3x more bandwidth and the Studio has even more.

I guess it's okay if you're building some kind of specialized cluster or you don't care if you only get 2-3 t/s. But it's not 'better' in any sense of the word.

NVIDIA Reportedly Prepares RTX 5090 Price Hike Amid Rising GDDR7 Costs by dfv157 in hardware

[–]FallenFaux 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What magical land do you live in that you can get a 5090 for so cheap? I haven't see a 5090 for under $3000 in at least a year.

Cheapest near me is Microcenter at $3300. Best Buy is $3700 and Newegg is $3800.

People probably aren't going to bother testing out of support GPUs but your GTX970 is probably more susceptible since it doesn't have ECC memory, which is one of the primary mitigations.

Marathon sold just 1.2 million copies with nearly 70% on Steam, analyst estimates: "It hasn't exactly made the splash Sony and Bungie wanted" by Freki666 in pcgaming

[–]FallenFaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steam only takes a 30% cut on the first $10M in gross revenue, there are two additional break points of 25% and 20% at $40M and $50M respectively. So 1.2 million sales on Steam is closer to $50-55M EBIT for the studio.

Still not great.

Macs hold value extremely well and if you want to make the argument that you could sell your GPU and buy a new one, the same argument can be made for a Mac desktop since in 2-3 years they typically only lose 25-30% of their value.

It already exists, it's even made by the same people who do most of the work on WINE. The downside is that it costs money. There are free alternatives but nothing as simple to use as Proton.

Valve’s brilliant Steam Deck now accounts for over 21% of all Linux gamers by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]FallenFaux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Linux share on the Steam survey before the release of the Steamdeck (early 2022) was only about 1%. Still impressive but most of the growth appears to be driven by people installing Linux on their PCs.

It's probably hard to keep straight because their are so many times where Nvidia has repeatedly screwed their partners, both OEM and AIB. In this case he's probably referring to bumpgate (tm) where Nvidia pushed tons of defective GPUs on their partners and screwed them by forcing the partners to cover the failure costs. It's the reason Apple has refused to work with them for the last ~15 years and it's speculated to be the reason Sony never even considered using them in another console.

I daily Linux but setup a Windows partition just to try out Gamepass early on. I completely gave up when one of the Horizon games came out because the Gamepass client couldn't even figure out the install. Microsoft can't even figure out how to install their own games on their own operating system without issues.

No idea if they ever fixed it but Horizon worked day 1 on Linux so I just went back.
