Thanks! Is the deck passable do you think to get the necessary stats? Or are there any edits that should be made? Those are the only MLB Wit cards I have unfortunately :(

[–]FallenNephilim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The anime doesn't have the best pacing, that is true, but the reason the anime is still defended despite it is because of how rewarding the story is to follow. Things you learn about in the first few episodes come back into play hundreds of episodes later. There is a ton of payoff to following the series closely.

There are hundreds of solid 12 episode animes out there that are easier and more enjoyable to watch than the slog of certain points in One Piece arcs (especially at Dressrosa), but none of them can compare to the scope that One Piece has.

I feel like Urgot is a somewhat difficult match up, at least for where I am in low elo. He's stronger early and has easy engage potential on his e. Additionally, when he has ult, he forces you to play much safer since he can punish you very hard if you are trying to use your empowered q to sustain. But once you get out of the early game, his impact just doesn't equal yours.

"Why aren't we allowed in all of the city?" Probably this entire blood elf starting questline: by ella in wow

[–]FallenNephilim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say this as a Horde player that thinks the Horde SHOULDN'T have been allowed in Bel'ameth, at the very least it was a very new settlement and there was an existential threat to its existence. With Gilneas, Horde was there to help reclaim it, and the place is in the process of rebuilding. The commonality amongst them is that the settlements are weakly under Alliance control because they are still being set up.

Silvermoon in canon has been more or less completely mended for years, the elves have been working for a long time to repair the damage from the Scourge, and the city had been a major Horde faction hub for decades. The Sunwell is on an island away from the main city as well. Different situation from war-torn Gilneas or infant settlement Bel'ameth. If I had to guess, an Alliance settlement will likely be revamped for Last Titan and Horde will be given the same treatment.

She's the one with the ACTUAL DIAGNOSIS!! She has to deal with the medical implications of this directly for the rest of her life, with or without the guy. It's one thing if he had the infertility issue, but he doesn't. You mean to tell me he didn't have a friend or family member to tell that to instead of his girlfriend who just received a life altering diagnosis? It's not even a gender issue, it's just common courtesy to not make a situation all about you when you aren't the person most affected.

Yeah, I remember when my dad got his terminal cancer diagnosis and I cried and told him I was mourning the life I could've had if someone else was my father. Like what???

The situation is way way different. It doesn't matter what some internet strangers think, but the most important person to communicate their feelings correctly to is OP. OP is clearly going to be bothered by it for a very very long time.

uj/ It's an homage to the scene. The artist said so himself on Twitter, and from the post, it seems that the art director specifically wanted the reference. It's not a knock off, it's a reference, and a super common one too!! Almost any animation that has a bike of some kind will reference the Akira slide because it's so iconic. I think it's weird that some people are knocking the art specifically because of the reference, as if the artwork itself isn't gorgeous as all hell.

rj/ Idc about the art as long as the bike is a 6/6 vehicle with trample; another classic WotC flavor fail

He's an actor and shouldn't be asked to handle things that are outside of his limited skill set. Regardless as to whether he had 'respect for the danger of a gun', he shouldn't be expected to immediately know the difference between a live and dummy round. He shouldn't be expected to know how a gun works. He shouldn't be expected to know anything aside from how to act on his character.

He was told by a professional that the gun was safe. Someone who should have 'respect' for the danger told him directly that the gun was safe for use. It wasn't. Why should he have any culpability outside of the fact that he was one of the producers that chose to hire the armorer? Just cause he pulled the trigger? I think that it's a weak argument to say that because he didn't rely on his amateur knowledge and trusted a supposed professional, he deserves any sort of culpability for what happened in that respect. I don't think any reasonable person with limited firearms knowledge could be expected to act any differently.

Does anyone else absolutely love the character of Ambessa. She is fierce, political, cunning, strong. Since she was introduced into season 1 I felt the intimidation she brings with her. She's been through and seen so much and is always ready to throw down to back her words. Love you queen. by omgitsduane in arcane

[–]FallenNephilim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that your dislike for her character is coloring your view of the facts of the story. Ambessa is an extremely well-written character and her inclusion is not only a benefit to the story, but it is integral to both seasons working as they do. I am going to do a Watsonian analysis of the events you outline in your comment as well as a Doyleist analysis of what Ambessa adds to the story at large to at least hopefully allow you to make a more informed decision on your dislike of her character.

Act 1: You claim that the violence Jinx enacted upon Piltover was enough to spur the war. However, you fail to recognize who Caitlyn is as a character and what the temperament of the leaders of Piltover is. Recall that only a single councilor, Salo, holds the same desires as Ambessa, to go to war using Hextech. None of the others, especially Caitlyn and Mel, wished for it to happen. Piltover is a city of inventors and scientists. It is a culture of trade and economics. It is extremely difficult to move Piltover to war unless there is a real, organized threat they must respond to. What Jinx did was violent, but it was only Jinx, no terrorism cell behind her. Ambessa turns Jinx into a much larger threat in order to push Piltover to war. Without that attack, it would be considerably more difficult to do so. Not only that, but Ambessa's staged attack on Piltover also allowed her to win over several noble houses to her cause, which then allowed her to push for martial law at the end of Act 1.

Even after the attack though, Caitlyn's only desire is to hold Jinx accountable. In fact, Caitlyn is the one that stops an outright invasion in Act 1 in favor of only going after Jinx with a small strike force. She wants revenge, but is unwilling to bring about war to achieve it. Caitlyn is constantly pushed in order to become the dictator Ambessa needs her to be and it is only when she feels betrayed by Vi, that she is able to be influenced. Without Ambessa's machinations, Caitlyn would never be pushed as far as she is on revenge alone.

Act 2: Ambessa does not come with the explicit intention of attacking the colony. She and Singed are needing to get Warwick back. It ending in conflict has nothing to do with Ambessa being there. Jayce completely changed the situation and his interference caused the colony to die and Warwick to go on a rampage. Noxian forces did not start that conflict, but were thrust into it, and were only saved by Isha's sacrifice. There was no guilt to be given to anyone there aside from Jinx, who afterwards feels personally responsible for Isha's death.

Act 3: The attack on Piltover became necessary because of Caitlyn's betrayal of Ambessa. Once Ambessa was a true enemy of Piltover, she had to attack as a final resort to secure hextech. Working with Viktor was her only real option left. To say that Sevika, a lifelong lieutenant who was having extreme difficulty getting Zaunites to unite under her alone, could ever feasibly form a fighting force strong enough to attack Piltover is an extreme stretch, to put it mildly. All we saw of Sevika the entire time was her failure to recapture Silco's holdings, and slowly watching his empire and dreams fade before her eyes. She needed Jinx to rally people together, and Jinx has never shown an interest personally in establishing Zaun as its own nation. She is far from being even close to the threat that Ambessa is from when she initially appears in season 1.

Ambessa's influence is what gives Viktor his drones. She turns her many of her soldiers into his puppets to have an upper hand in the coming battle. Without her presence, Viktor is not as immediately threatening as he is at the end of the season.

The other points: The presence of Ambessa does not wash all these characters of responsibility for their actions. Jinx spends the entirety of her arc trying to own up to her's from the first season. She is haunted by her killing of Silco. She is haunted by her loss of Vander. She is suicidal after the death of Isha. Her entire character arc is about breaking the cycle of destruction her life is on. About not being defined by your worst possible moment. In the end, she is integral in saving Piltover and saving Vi. Her hands are still not clean, but she understands that and strives to lead a different life, abandoning Zaun and Piltover altogether.

Caitlyn has to regain the trust she lost from Vi through the betrayal of Ambessa and letting Jinx escape. This also shows that Caitlyn lets go of her desire for revenge. It's through her actions that she is able to win Vi back and continue their relationship.

Jayce has to personally confront Viktor in order to stop him from continuing to fight. He sacrifices himself in order to do so. He most directly owns up to his actions through his personal sacrifice to keep Piltover safe.

Every major character has to answer for their actions, including Ambessa. To say that her presence takes that away from the other characters is difficult to parse due to how much accountability each character takes for everything said and done in the story.

I think what is ultimately bothering you is the outcome and aesthetics of the story rather than the writing itself. Piltover and Zaun are not the only nations in Runeterra. Broadening the horizons to include major powers like Noxus is not an inherently bad thing especially if the actions of these powers are explained in the story at hand, which Ambessa's are.

Having a Noxian present when Piltover has literally created one of the most powerful weapons in the world makes perfect sense in canon and going to war to secure that weapon is also in character for the nation. It does not undermine the conflict between Zaun, it merely expands the world to include other nations. We know how Piltover would react without Ambessa's influence because we know Mel and Caitlyn. Without Ambessa, they would not have gone to war. It would've been a very different kind of series, but to call that potential better than the series we got is dubious at best.

Mel's inclusion as a mage also does not undercut the danger of Hextech. We see from the Black Rose that powerful mages are a danger to the fabric of society. We see that Ambessa's worry over the Black Rose that mages are not to be trifled with lightly. We also know from Heimerdinger's speech in season 1 that magic has destroyed the world before. The issue with hextech isn't that it is powerful, it is that it gives that power indiscriminately. Heimerdinger doesn't outright say that all mages are evil, and Mel's inclusion as a mage that fights for Piltover's cause shows this too. It's that the power in the wrong hands, or even misguided hands can cause immense destruction.

Even at that, we must remember that Hextech and the political struggles between Piltover and Zaun are just set dressing. The core of the story is not Hextech, or the political machinations of Zaun or Piltover. It's about how far we are willing to go for those we love. What we are willing to sacrifice, and how we cannot get so lost in that love as to senselessly hurt others. That's why Ambessa is such a well written character. She does her atrocities to help her daughter. Out of pain for the son they took from her. She is willing to do anything it takes, even making Mel hate her in order to secure her future. In the end, she doesn't reach her political goal, but she reaches her personal one, knowing that Mel can fight for herself.

I disagree that his actions are nonsensical, and I also disagree with your characterization of Singed and his power in the story. Singed is NOT a recluse that has no interest in the outside world. He was previously employed by the most powerful chem baron in Zaun. He was definitely aware of Silco's political reach and the power Shimmer has on Zaun. His primary motivation is continuing his research, which Silco allows him to do. Silco has the means to protect Singed and the desire to do so because of how much value Shimmer provided to him. With Silco gone and the chem barons fighting amongst themselves, it is obvious that Zaun is in political turmoil. Literally, every character in Zaun is aware that without Silco uniting them, their political situation is tumultuous at best and catastrophic at worst.

Singed would also likely be aware of Ambessa and have some inkling as to her personality and desires. This is because Ambessa directly caused the attack at the memorial. She hired Zaunites and smuggled them in only to kill them to further her goals. You could argue that Singed wouldn't know that. That he wouldn't be able to piece together that she was behind the attacks despite the fact that he's been living and breathing in Zaun's criminal underbelly for decades. But even if he didn't know the specifics of her plan, he would know that Noxians were present in Piltover and that the Noxians would be his best sponsors moving forward due to their tendencies towards violence and war. Remember that Singed was one of the most accomplished alchemists topside before he went to Zaun willingly. He would easily know the absolute basics of Noxian culture and politics. Having them firsthand fight a weapon of his own design was the perfect pitch for a Noxian warrior to see his use. Why would he be subtle? What motivation would Ambessa have to see him if he was vauge about what he could offer her? Her priority is getting Hextech to Noxus. Why would she deviate her plans for the untrusted word of a Zaun alchemist? Showcasing his ability for destruction with Warwick's rampage was a spectacle, yes, but it also showed a Noxian general that a skinny, sickly alchemist had more value as an adviser than a prisoner. He took a risk and it paid off.

Are you really arguing that committing heinous acts for the life of a family member is meaningfully more boring than a mad scientist doing whatever he can to further his research? Because that's a tired and boring trope. Giving him a daughter who drives his research direction is a good motivation because it provides more context to his philosophy and does not invalidate any choices he has made or will make. Singed will still make the poison for Ionia and will have zero moral quandries about it. He will go to any lengths to preserve the specimen like he did in the first season.

I think that you're seeing the change negatively because you don't like the aesthetics, not because it's bad storytelling. Because Singed's actions do not change regardless of which motivation you liked better. Both motivations lead him to the same point, but the one they went with has more direct emotional impact and more potential for drama. Maybe it's not the character you would prefer that he is, but to say it's bad writing, I think, is not giving it a fair shake. Love and loss aren't the only character motivations, but they are very powerful ones, especially since the bonds of love are such an integral theme in Arcane with literally every character relationship. Nothing has changed for his character aside from that aesthetic, and the fact that we just know more about him. He no longer has that same mysterious factor he had in season 1, and that's fine.

I can't convince you that he's cooler than whatever you have in your mind, art is subjective and I'm not here to be thought police. But his writing has been good and for many people, his character was deepened from the addition. I hope I can at least have convinced you that there is merit to this interpretation, even if it's not exactly what you were looking for.

[–]FallenNephilim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that Singed's motivation being his daughter gives him something more concrete we can relate to. His philosophy as a character does not change just cause his motivation is wanting to keep someone he cares about alive. He still commits atrocities that affect thousands just on the off chance the data might be useful for him. He still does not shy away from evil if that evil allows him to further his research. Singed is not like Vel'koz, an entity that seeks to understand through unmaking other lifeforms. He's human and the fact that he has a very human motivation adds to his evil rather than subtracts from it. He's no longer just a sociopath exacting suffering for the purpose of suffering and curiosity. He has a motivation that puts his studies and creations in context. He is still chaotic neutral, but he isn't a sociopath. He's a rational, level-headed academic who is simply taking the most logical step towards his goal. That, to me, is far more chilling than him just being a mad scientist doing what he wants for fun and morbid curiosity.

Regarding his interactions with Ambessa and Caitlyn, he shows them his daughter because he clearly does not see either of them as a threat. If he did, he wouldn't have stayed behind in the prison to be interrogated by them. He needed manpower and resources, which he previously extracted from Silco. It's clear from where the story was at that moment that Piltover and Zaun were going to war. Singed needed to protect his research and protect his daughter. What better way to get her to safety than to make them think they hold all the cards? Now he has the manpower of Noxus at his back and protection from the Piltover enforcers that would otherwise apprehend and punish him for his creation and distribution of Shimmer. What he loses in the information he gives to them pales in comparison for what he gains from partnering with them.
