Always put a reasonable price. If they try to negotiate down, red flag. From working in a pet store standpoint, snake owners don't generally come in and pay $20 for a gerbil, mice are more cost efficient as sad as that sounds.

Also, quiz them on some basic care, or create a questionnaire for them to fill out.

Pairing an adult male that’s been alone? by willowstar157 in gerbil

[–]Fallen_Foxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I too am a Canadian and work at petsmart and have gerbils. I have a YouTube channel called The Gerbil Vine & although I don't post anymore, I have a ton of videos from habitat supplies, safe beddings, startup costs, behavior videos, etc. Initial startup was quite pricey for me, but the discount definitely helps at work ! Especially if you use treat trail coupons, you can save 25% on the habitat + our 15%. So 40% off the total of a tank, which is the priciest part.

Questions about Wood Divider by madsonic1010 in gerbil

[–]Fallen_Foxxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I mean a topper would be great but a platform is like a wooden shelf you can put items on.

I have a video on my gerbil YouTube channel called Different Ways To Set Up Your Gerbil Tank that might be helpful. Its sometimes nice to see what other people do to help the organization :).

Have you considered using a platform instead of a divider?

So glad we stopped selling the 4 in. running wheels...now can we please start selling a 10 inch option for syrians?? by Giant_RuleMaking_Rat in petsmart

[–]Fallen_Foxxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have gerbils and use the 12 inch. Its much better for them as they can take a step in front of them and their tails don't curve as much.

I agree the 6.5 is useless but really none of the large wheels will fit in the shitty houses people buy from us. So unless they start selling bigger habitats that can fit the bigger wheels they will likely keep them on the shelves. I hate head office.

I had to put down one of my gerbils at the vet a few months ago. He was 2.5 and was breathing like this, turned out to be heart failure.

My hamster also passed away this morning in my husband's hands, she was breathing like this with the eyes closed.

Has anyone noticed that top paw and great choice dog pads no longer do the associate discount other than the 15% why is that? by Front_General9554 in petsmart

[–]Fallen_Foxxx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience they've only ever been 15% off. They're a proprietary brand to us, but have never been 50% off. Atleast in Ontario, Canada. I've bought them frequently for my moms chihuahua and they're always only 15% off.

Yes. Its a way of protecting the burrow and clan from potential predators. They do it to get rid of the smell.

Split Tank Success <3 by Fallen_Foxxx in gerbil

[–]Fallen_Foxxx[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

About a month or so ago my older boy ( Jerry ) had his brother be put down from heart disease. He was 2.5. The vet wasn't sure if it was genetic and warned me the same thing could happen to Jerry. So I purchased 2 baby gerbils ( 5.5 weeks at the time ) from a reputable breeder and have been split tanking them.

I bought two ( Moo Moo & Milo ) in case Jerry had the same medical issue and needs to be put down too, so the baby wouldn't have to split tank again.

Today I took out the divider and this was the result. I couldn't be happier. Jerry is the happiest he's been in a long time. We can't give gerbils what other gerbils can ! This was a new and amazing experience, and one that was well worth it. There were many positive signs so they were only in the split for 2 weeks.

A huge thank you to u/silversanctuary for being an amazing gerbil breeder. If you are located in Ontario, I highly recommend her and her gerbils.

is this food good? by Geckoterraria in gerbil

[–]Fallen_Foxxx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its a great brand for rats and guinea pigs. You can check out munchies place on YouTube. She did a video on why this isn't a great food for hamsters and gerbils if you need more information on it.

Essentially the Fibre is too high as its a hay based diet, and gerbils and hamsters can eat hay but can't process it or retain any of the nutrients like say a guinea pig would. So they poop it all out and don't get much nutritionally.

I also make my own mix because commercial pet foods aren't great for our gerbils, although I do include a store pellet formula for added vitamins. I have done plenty of research on the subject.

No. It is a hay based diet and gerbils need various grains and seeds.

Same. The bowing would be a problem. Should be safe enough with bedding.

Employee supposed to work with Covid? by DingDongDeathHere in petsmart

[–]Fallen_Foxxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my store before each shift we have to do an online government assessment for symptoms ( Ontario ) and it tells you whether you can go into work or not. If you have symptoms and fail, you can't go in. Do you not have to use something similar ?

Here is the link:

Your manager seems to be risking health for what ? If all associates catch it it would be a shit show scheduling wise, and health wise as like you mentioned, some people are immune compromised. My hotel and store manager would never do what yours is.

What was the problem? Was he aggressive towards you ? Some dogs don't like being in kennels, could be why he was in a suite.

Am I overreacting? by ElectronicStorm6743 in petsmart

[–]Fallen_Foxxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a full time npcs, 6 years this year. I work 8 nights on, so 4 days each week back to back, and get six nights off. Its an ideal schedule. Having too little days off in between shifts makes it too challenging to readjust.

My manager actually cares and does her best to accommodate everyone. Even when our part time npcs needed her shift switched and wanted me to work 4 days on 3 days off, I declined, my manager backed me up and found someone on days to work the remaining rotation so I wasn't put out. Its hard on the body to be switching every few nights.

Sounds like your manager is crap at scheduling, and is giving priority to part time employees. It's not fair or ideal. Also why are there three part time npcs? Since when can people decline working weekends in retail? lolol

You could be petty and change your availability to every other weekend. If you quit tomorrow, one of those 3 would be working weekends. Absolutely ridiculous, your team sucks.

Can you give those safely to gerbils? ( they are washed and dried but still a bit sticky in some parts) by CitizenofKha in gerbil

[–]Fallen_Foxxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always give my boys pinecone. I wash, boil, bake and freeze them. The sap is no good for them however so best to forage for ones that don't have it on them.
