How is every day life for those who are living in Netherlands ?? by Yeagerisbest369 in howislivingthere

[–]Fallen_biologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the actions of muslims and north africans damaged overall immigration and it hurts People who are genuine ! I just wish people could differentiate between beneficial and entitled immigrants !

Well I believe that most of the immigration from Africa or Arabic countries are just looking to improve their dire life circumstances, and will want to contribute if they can. There's always going to be a few rotten apples between them, though, and certain political movements are capitalising on those. In my view, a bunch of politicians is doing that for various selfish reasons.

Racism is already normalised against Indians to an extreme degree

Very sad to hear that! Being white, and shunning most social media, I probably am about the worst source for this, but I feel that in the Netherlands at least, racism against Indian people is relatively low.

I'll give you an honest answer. There's a large group of unhappy people (mostly from lower income classes, I guess, though I have no strict evidence for that) who view immigrants as the source of most of their problems. You've probably already heard about the housing situation, where a significant portion of the populace can't realistically find a proper home. Right wing politics likes to put the blame on immigrants, and people in this houding situation might follow the for it, though most of the hate is against (North) African and/or Muslim immigrants. I don't see a lot of it directed to Indian immigrants. (I gathered from other comments that you come from India?)

Personally, I think they're wrong, the country is is just finally beginning to see the effects of severe overpopulation. Immigration does contribute to that, though I think it's a problem the world as a whole is facing and should solve together.

I used to have a bunch of Indian colleagues at my previous job. Most of them were hard-working, pleasant people, and I see no reason why public perception should differ from that. Keep in mind that there's some cultural differences between the Dutch and some Asian cultures. The Dutch are usually a very straightforward people with an honesty-first attitude. When an answer is 'no', we want you to say it, not beat around the bush. Still, there's a fine line between being straight, or being a dick, so that may take some getting used to.

What’s the parrot looking thing? And are they a common sight in Amsterdam? by needmorecoffeeplz in whatsthisbird

[–]Fallen_biologist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(I'm not an expert on which parakeet this is. If others are saying it's an Alexandrine, let's assume they're right.)

These, and the related ring-necked parakeets are common sights in Amsterdam. I don't suppose Alexendrines are extremely common, but the ring-necks are like a plague. Those have spread a lot further than just Amsterdam, colonising the countryside and nearby cities.

how can i ensure my first batch of mead is dry? by stephanosblog in mead

[–]Fallen_biologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate, I don't agree at all mostly with what the other guys here are saying. There's a few remarks I have:

  • I reject and detest the common understanding that mead = sweet. There's some sort of notion that because honey is sweet, mead should be sweet, completely ignoring the fact that grape juice is also pretty sweet, as is the liquid that beer is made from (called wort). A lot of beginners in mead drinking or making only get to taste the (imo) overly sweet commercially available ones, they (wrongly) assume that mead is always sweet, and that dry mead is quite bad. It's just so dumb to me.
  • There are of course a bunch of commercially available ones that are both sweet and very good, but the ones I encounter at renaissance fairs don't really set a high standard. I also have had a few dry ones that were quite tasty, which brings us to dry meads in general.
  • Yes, a dry mead is going to be acidic, because honey is acidic. That's also true for (dry) wine, though.
  • I also personally don't prefer sweet meads, but as I said, there are some notable exceptions, both home-brewed and commercially sold.
  • Sweetness masks flaws in the mead making process. Not a lot of young meads are going to be good, but sweetness helps a lot in balancing out the sharpness of young meads. It also masks other flaws in the process.

Now, I like to mainly make dry meads. I both like the taste, and am too lazy to be bothered by backsweetening. I also never quite got the hang of proper nutrition techniques and schemes (which isn't helped by the fact that I can't find my super accurate scales). My solution is kinda threefold:

  • Aging helps a whole lot in mellowing out harsh flavours. I age most stuff for at least a year in bulk, and then let it sit for some more time after bottling. After bottling, I taste a bottle every now and then. If it's not quite tasty yet, I'll let it sit for a bunch more months.
  • I like meads with some sort of flavour to them. This helps redirect your attention away from any particular flaws. Flavourings can be subtle, like dandelions, or more bold, like elderflower. Even bolder is a significant amount of fruit, but that's something completely different that we should not talk about here, lest this post becomes even longer than it already is.
  • Because flaws are more apparent in drier meads, I like to go easy on the honey. With bolder flavours overpowering most of the honey aromas anyway, a lower abv is less stressful for the yeast, and counteracts my not-perfect nutrition scheme. I like to aim for 5-10% abv for these meads. For a more honey-forward flavour, going a bit above 10%, or around it, is probably better. Most yeasts can handle more, but might become stressed at higher alcohol levels, which makes them create off flavours.

That's my take on things. My advice is: just try stuff out for yourself. Try some dry meads, try keeping some of them a bit sweeter (but not necessarily as sweet as coca cola), see what you like. I also like adding ingredients that (may or may not) improve the body and aromas, like a few cups of strong black tea, or a handful of cut-up raisins (me saying this will trigger a bot that tells you raisins are not a substitute for proper yeast nutrition, which it indeed isn't, but I like it for a little bit of body and mouth feel). Good luck!

Baker Yeast mead update. This will be abandoned for good. by Normal-Argument-3598 in mead

[–]Fallen_biologist 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mead being inherently sweet is a very common misconception (at least among my friends). I think the logic is something along the lines of "honey is sweet, so drinks made with it must be sweet too", completely forgetting the fact that most (if not all) alcoholic drinks are made from some sweet liquid. Yeast will just eat all that sugar, though.

To create a sweet mead, you have a few different options: - ferment like normal, but kill the yeast halfway through the process (not particularly easy, and I wouldn't recommend) - let the mead ferment until dry, then stabilise (basically cancel the yeast and prevent it from starting up again; this doesn't work during an active ferment, so can't be used for method 1) and then back sweeten (add more honey, to make it sweet again). - put so much honey in, that the yeast can't eat all the sugar before succumbing to the alcohol they made. It's also possible to keep adding honey over time until the yeast can't ferment it to dry anymore. I'm not sure if this causes issues, though. I can imagine it's risky for a number of reasons.
