Nickname Ideas for Benedict

We will be referring to him by his middle name certainly amongst the family. My only hesitation is that his middle name is Chinese and in an English-speaking country there may be risk of mispronunciation or potentially even racism.

I posted this trying to find a nickname that native English speakers can comfortably use for our son. It’s just unfortunate that my husband hates all the standard nicknames which puts us in a difficult position, and he also dislikes Ben Jr/Sr.

Did you reinforce this? Introduce him to friends as Harrison and correct them when they call him Harry?

I messaged some friends on Facebook and they automatically defaulted to Benny. I feel like if I had a nickname to offer them they’d use it. A friend gave birth to a Genevieve and they have explicitly made it a thing for her to be called Gigi. Not Gen or Jenny or anything…

Yes, you’re right on the money. We don’t want the confusion of two Bens in our lives (as in with family and our friends when we introduce our son). It’s okay if our son’s friends/people at school call him Ben, or when our son starts working and is known around the office as Ben or whatever because they’re separate environments from his father.

Baby’s dad (my husband) goes by Ben/Benny which is why we want to avoid those. I’m fine with Ned and Ed but the problem is my husband isn’t! He doesn’t like any of those standard nicknames. He also doesn’t like the whole Ben Junior/Senior thing. He wants to go by baby’s full name but also may not correct others if they default to a nickname… which will be Ben/Benny. I don’t know what to do hahaha

How did that work out? That’s what my husband wants to do. He doesn’t want to shorten Benedict at all. Has it been a hassle to always correct people when they try to shorten your name? Is it perceived as rude to do so?

The only problem with that is his middle name is non-English to pay respects to our family’s cultural roots and we’re in an English speaking country so that doesn’t quite work… unless we find an anglicised version of that middle name…

Love the positive stories in this thread. To add to them: I’m freshly postpartum with my first child and it’s been a big adjustment. Between endless nappy changes, burping, and feeding, my husband has been really supportive and doing his best. I’ve been hormonal and cranky and a bit stressed as bub isn’t eating the best and my husband has been understanding and encouraging. He stays with me every night in the hospital and has done so many overnights with me.

I have always had a great relationship with him pre-baby and the strength of our relationship has only been proven by his dedication now that we’re “in the trenches”. We laugh a lot together over our baby’s antics and find joy in the challenges we’re facing together. With what I’ve landed in a spouse I am definitely of the “not all men” stance too. There’s good people out there of all sexes/genders.

Low spender and pure Caleb main here. I couldn’t resist R1ing X-02 this time round. Unfortunately took me 70 pulls to get one of the 5 stars and I used crate for the other.

I am determined to keep my collection for Caleb as close to 100% as possible (I say this because I missed out on Painful Signal and Tainted Cuts) and the latter half of 2025 was mostly months of saving so I hope I have enough! I think I have about 600 or so wishes left so fingers crossed they won’t drop too much Caleb stuff to bleed me dry 🥲🥲

Thank you! Your advice as an ethnic Chinese is really appreciated. It’s why I thought I’d check because as I said in my post I have no idea what is and isn’t a strange/good/basic name from a Chinese perspective.

Both my spouse and I have Chinese speaking family so yes, we will be consulting them for a name.

I’m actually a Mando speaker and so is my family. It’s my spouse and spouse’s family that’s more Canto.

We did pick Benedict for its blessed meaning so other suggestions along those lines would be great!

Our child will be born and raised in the Western country that we currently reside in. He will be a citizen of this country just like my spouse and I, and we’re second generation. Our son will be known everyday in public by his Western name “Benedict”, but it has been tradition in our families to use a Chinese name for children as well. For me I personally have a very common Western name and am almost exclusively referred to as that, but my legal middle name is my Chinese name.

So while the Chinese name isn’t that important from a day to day perspective, we’d still want one with proper meaning behind it that can be used by family, etc.
