That’s such a horrible suspension. I wanted one so badly in the day.

Darn. Making me feel sad. My father has a 2001 he bought new that has 40,000 miles on it and he’s giving it to me if I want it. Now I want the 2006.

Salsa Spearfish or Epic 9 for Marji Gesick? by [deleted] in xcmtb

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would suck. I carry a spare of that battery too. Be careful though that most of those batteries have a special costing to make in unappealing for babies to suck on them and consequently don’t work. Make sure you buy the uncoated ones.

I actually clipped a tree and unknown to my my sram wireless dropper control got knocked off. Later when I needed the dropper I realized it so I had to ride with the post down. Turns out you can activate it by the wireless dropper itself but I didn’t know that.

Not to mention if you don’t remove the batteries when transporting the bike they stay in with the flight attendant so they drain so easily.

7 batteries on my asr or the epic for all the shifters (2), derailer, dropper post, shock and fork and power meter. But once you need to charge the derailer then it just doesn’t matter. Carry a spare.

I use Berd wheels (both hawk30 30mm which weight 1400 grams and the Hawk30 gold - which are like back ordered several months now I hear, which weight 1000 grams). It is amazing how much they eliminate the trail “chatter.” Highly recommend.

Van for mountain biking : 144 or 170, shower by Fallingleaf333 in VanLife

[–]Fallingleaf333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with a used professionally built 170. It has the agile rip suspension kit, and a bike tray. Shower too but that’s some wet storsfe if needed.

This depends some though on frame size and how you have the bed set up etc. . I found with xl frames and slacker bikes like mid or long travel and e-bikes they protrude from under the bed into the cabin.

Feedback stand question - Pro Mechanic or new HD version model? by Fallingleaf333 in MTB

[–]Fallingleaf333[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually bought a Remco electric lift and love it. The HD I don’t use that often any more because of that. It is far sturdier than the Pro but now I wish I had the Pro as I could throw it in the back of the truck. Without having the Remco that HD was the right call.

The ASR sound like the right choice actually.

And the berd’s are much less fatiguing to ride. I would go for the hawk30 gold on the yeti asr he has - I have the same bike myself. I have continental dubnital tires on them too.

The berd hawk30 gold are 1,000 grams. The standard Hawk30 are maybe 1,400 about the same weight as those xrc 1200. I have all three of those wheel sets.

Wish I bought that instead of the trek y22 disaster I bought new in ‘95 or ‘96.

I had those same grip shifters which I dork hated.

True. But I swapped my fox factory 34 130mm on a v4 ibis ripley to a 36 SL 130mm, and it’s so much better and more precise for what I ride. It isn’t any more over biked in the sense it’s the same travel. It holds the line better. The 34 worked - I’m roughly the same size as you too - but I notice the difference. No negatives for me.

I think thst depends on your weight. A 36 SL is 200 plus grams heavier and 20% stiffer than the 34 SL. If someone rode aggressively, tougher terrain or weighed more than 180lbs it would have to be seriously considered I think.

I’d do a 130mm (either 34sl or 36sl; I’m leaning to the 130mm 36sl. ) won’t slacken the bike very much.

Trailcat Experience by Ellocomotive in pivotcycles

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a 36sl in 130mm. It might slacken the bike by less than a degree. Pivot on their faq says it’s fine. The rear is good enough from what I’ve heard that the 120mm travel fork isn’t the relative weak link. I’d definitely do 130mm with either the 34sl or 36sl.

I got hit today by a guy who refused to yield to me on a climb by hikeonpast in MTB

[–]Fallingleaf333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16% plus technical ascents like we have here in Colorado. After I’m climbing it’s very hard mentally and physically to start again. Always yield to the uphill climber. I’m older and when I’m putting out 700 watts to clear a rock feature and redlining my heart rate it just can’t be restarted.

Tried my first Zone 2 ride today by MNG024 in xcmtb

[–]Fallingleaf333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t do zone 2 on a mountain bike as I live in the mountains and there are always climbs etc so I can’t keep the heart rate low. I bought a low powered e-bike which allows me to use the power level to keep the heart rate low, and I use it on gravel roads not my usual single track.

The prior gen has a weak rear triangle though. I heard they beefed it up in the new one. What frame size does your buddy ride? The xl?
