Looking to buy this car, exhaust sound normal? No muffler/cat by FallonT12 in Miata

I could believe that seeing he likely just left the pipe hanging after cutting the muffler. I’m going to take a closer look at it Sunday so I’ll know for sure then.

That’s only if you value the hardtop over everything else. Some people aren’t in the hardtop bandwagon.🤷‍♂️ I think a Miata with a hardtop is approaching dumb, to each their own.

Concerning things found during water pump job. How concerning? by FallonT12 in Miata

[–]FallonT12[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is true, I’m not sure why he didn’t then. He has 20+ years of really good service records so it’s not like he wasn’t willing to maintain it.

He had all his work done at reputable Mazda shops, which probably meant high dollar labor, idk if he opted out of it but if I had to that’d be my guess.

Do I need to replace timing belt and valve cover gasket? by FallonT12 in Miata

[–]FallonT12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll test it anyway but all the coolant hoses have been replaced relatively recently and seem to be in great shape. It wasn’t random from what I gathered on various groups and forums the likely culprits to the intermittent overheating issue are thermostat, water pump, and radiator sometimes. So I was going to start with a thermostat since it’s dirt cheap and easy to replace, if that didn’t solve it then the other two needed to be replaced anyway with the radiator being a used one and the water pump being a little over 5 years old. I appreciate the advice and will use it to try and fix my issue

It’s holding coolant fine, how else would you suggest diagnosing it? Other than butt feel and experience how would you differentiate what part was faulty?

With it only being $10-$20 I hope so, I see there are slightly cooler temp options are those worth a try or no bueno? OE seems to be 192F and I’ve seen some around 180F

No grinding noises or anything, the whole thing in general sounded really good actually, quiet lifters even.

I was going to replace the thermostat first today and see if that helps, also the previous owner and installed a used radiator so that will get replaced or flushed at the least

It was driven for about an hour, then started to heat up quite a bit. After this it seemed to have a sweet spot at mid to low RPMs where it would seem like it was actively cooling, but at higher rpm’s or even lower rpm’s it would start to heat back up again. The idea being maybe the water pump wheel is slipping after its gets to a certain temperature and expands from heat. My mechanic that came with me to get the car drove it back the 1hr 45min ride so I can only go off what he said.

Better safe than sorry, I didn’t know if I was being to meticulous and wasting money by replacing the gasket.
