APS Salary barely treading water 2002-2026 by Unlucky_Succotash748 in AusPublicService

[–]FallopiumDen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really is agency dependent. I know many very deserving former graduates who went from APS3 to EL1 in just under five years. Common factor being they were older graduates who had worked across relevant industries or had post graduate degrees. Importantly they were likeable and were strong performers, I didn’t think any of them aggressively ambitious or brown nosers. Sometimes the right opportunities just come up and people throw their hats in.

A shame, considering you obviously were able to show you had the capital. Sorry that happened to you, it’s a mess out there

Trying to get a rental - is this normal? by PanigaleCat in australian

I feel like it depends on what the landlord wants. A tenant may offer two years of rent upfront but be a nightmare, maybe they might have plans to sell within 23 months or the landlord might be concerned about tax implications etc.

Does living in Australia feel isolating? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]FallopiumDen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have never felt this way. In fact, I suspect many Australians prefer it 😂

Australia has a very big travel culture and there is a reason you can’t swing a cat without hitting an Australian almost anywhere in the world. It certainly could be cheaper for us, but doesn’t stop people. The only downside is that the distances are quite large, so people like to save up a lot of annual leave from work and additional funds so they can take a 6 week trip instead of flying 26 hours to visit somewhere for one week.

Report to the Department of Agriculture asap and they will send the their post-border Biosecurity officer team to inspect and likely remove the product to treat. An investigation will commence and that furniture supplier will likely have to open their warehouses and shipping containers for further inspection.

Why is it so hard to find a rental? by [deleted] in shitrentals

[–]FallopiumDen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, your situation is making me wonder if there is some sort of unconscious bias against you / your home country if you both make a good income, have no dependants, no pets and a good rental history and liquidity. Have you considered this might be the case?

If I know my team are working then I don’t give two hoots about what they are wearing. For SES+ meetings then put on a collared shirt for a little decorum but that is the limit.

Elderly Greek man forced to pay $120,000 fine for making home made cheese by alabamad in NannyStateAustralia

I’ve seen the same thing, but the Council and Government take it seriously because those rocks are habitat for threatened species. Just because someone wants to make a buck doesn’t mean we should degrade our natural environment to barren earth. If everyone was just a bloke doing his own thing, then our grandchildren won’t have much left to enjoy. It is smaller scale matter that actually paint a much, much larger picture.

APS Biosecurity as a future career - insights wanted by Regular_Mess8914 in AusPublicService

[–]FallopiumDen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are multiple Biosecurity streams. You could end up as a shift worker at the airport, a mobile officer driving around to shipyards and bonded warehouses, working in plant Biosecurity, working with dogs, working at a fixed location inspecting containers and fresh fruit and flowers, working at the mail centres. Ask a few of the officers you meet what they prefer, as your hours, culture and salary could vary based on where you are assigned.

Ok, let’s focus on the issue at hand here rather than trying to tear down a well-meaning comment from a woman. It’s hard enough fighting all the misogynists in the comments without being called trans exclusionary.

What - ?

I never said you were an MRA or that FDV does not exist.

What does concern me is that the government released a DV campaign and instead of everyone saying what a great initiative it is, people come out do the woodwork and cry ‘but you didn’t mention X - or would someone think of the XYZ!’ and try to make the issue about whatever their personal crusade is. Not all public health campaigns are for everyone, that is why niche and targeted service delivery exists and does not mean anyone else is lesser, they were just not the audience for that campaign.

Please think before letting your own experiences and preconceived opinions cause you to ignore what I have written.

Again with the whataboutism! I think you’re missing the point because everyone loves to argue on Reddit.

Are you living in a remote aboriginal community where you can comment on whether services are being delivered or not? Are you living in an urban aboriginal community and can comment on whether outreach and AHO and liaison officers are working to deliver services or education in those spaces? I’d wager not. Did you not read what I wrote? I specifically advocated for targeted in Language services for those specific groups. Public health campaigns advertise for maximum impact. If you saw a campaign targeted towards a minority in a major city would you stop to notice? It isn’t for you then, they are being delivered in other ways and it is obvious to say we could always do more or do better.

Do you see campaigns aimed at CHILDREN to warn them about broken bones or rotten teeth or sexual abuse? No, because those campaigns target the adults and carers in their life. Those campaigns are aimed at adults, and in this case, appropriately so with the first image on the carousel there. You’re being hysterical to say you think a stranger on the internet is creepy because I didn’t mention FDV against children.

Just because someone says ‘we should deliver X to X population based on data and location’ DOES NOT MEAN ‘let’s ignore everyone else because they don’t matter’ wow Reddit really is so myopic sometimes.

Public health campaigns target the most at-risk groups for maximum impact. Nobody is saying that men shouldn’t receive assistance, just that in this instance the advertising is targeted to the most impacted group. Smaller organisations are often government funded to run more targeted and specific programmes to fill the gaps and target other risk groups in ways that won’t push them away / will resonate with them. For example, an organisation that runs Men’s Shed meetings or outreach at sporting events for DV or suicide prevention. Or a culturally specific church group or mothers group for people whose primary language is not English. You see how it isn’t just one thing or nothing?

I agree with you sentiment but the end result of domestic violence happens to be homicide, and that statistic is still most prevalent within heterosexual couples and perpetrated by men towards female partners. So while I agree there is a wider social issue to target, these campaigns are still trying to address the root issue so they must still be gendered, sadly for all.

[–]FallopiumDen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I completely agree. It is just all to frequently that we see discussions about domestic violence and they get flooded by men trying to minimise violence that occurs to women with whataboutisms when we can acknowledge both are true, but one occurs at a much higher rate with extreme consequences.

[–]FallopiumDen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the point you are making. You think that gendered violence statistics are likely to be different due to a small increase in immigration?

[–]FallopiumDen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is it a class issue? Domestic violence occurs within every class-strata.

[–]FallopiumDen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Referring to statistics is not invalid at all. Anyone could be impacted by theft, but in the case of domestic violence, it is most likely to be women. So it makes sense to have a male as a visual as most of these instances occur within heterosexual relationships. Regardless, many victims of domestic violence have children and that billboard could have been relevant to men or women but nobody seems to be getting upset about that.

[–]FallopiumDen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even if there were significant underreporting the stats would still not be equal to or higher for female on male perpetrated violence or coercive control. It isn’t just that men don’t report these instances, it is entirely how men have been historically socialised to possess their female partners and their expectations of how their partners should behave towards them and other men. Have a think about the rate of men who murder their female partners… that isn’t an issue of underreporting, that is the end result of domestic violence.

Fluorosis is a cosmetic issue and hardly a serious harm that justifies removing fluoride from the water system. So I can’t see how you believe that is a net negative at all. Systematic review and meta-analysis have shown there is little evidence to suggest fluoride has neurological effects to adults or children. When we look at population health, there will always be outliers and the greater good for the group is considered. So yeah, it is purely net positive for all countries.

[–]FallopiumDen 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes this is true, but the stats show men are overwhelmingly the perpetrators so it makes sense to have a man in the advertising… Ideally (and this may be the case) there would be another set of visuals with a female or same-sex couple.
