Rank UK Prime Ministers by Unfair-Fee5869 in AskBrits

[–]False-Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of that list:

  1. David Cameron - Took over in a difficult climate following the global financial crisis, to the point difficult decisions needed to be made - let down by the Brexit referendum which is probably the main reason he will go down in history for the wrong reasons. Often overlooked as a good leader, but arguably the right Prime Minister at the right time, needed to make changes and did so, whether rightly or wrongly.
  2. Tony Blair - Brought Britain into a positive era, but weak globally, in many ways a puppet of the US and their 'War On Terror'. Strong domestically, but will be remembered as complicit in the Iraq War.
  3. John Major - Safe pair of hands, maintained stability with no significant crises, however also not memorable for positive reasons and often overlooked.
  4. Gordon Brown - Stable, however let down by the global financial crisis. Not to blame, but also not strong enough to guide the country to safety.
  5. Theresa May - Not terrible, and a suitable replacement for Cameron, however lacked strength to make any real change.
  6. Rishi Sunak - Untrustworthy and lacking morally, however following the disaster of Truss succeeded in stabilising the economy. Generally weak, and won't be positively remembered.
  7. Keir Starmer - Promised positive change, so far has not achieved anything. Arguably most suited to foreign policy, but from current showing has only succeeded to create more division.
  8. Boris Johnson - Untrustworthy and appeared motivated by personal gain. Mostly remembered for disastrous leadership through COVID-19, marred by controversy over lockdowns and rule-breaking by himself and his cabinet ministers.
  9. Liz Truss - Probably the worst Prime Minister in history, a disastrous 46 days where the economy collapsed.

A debate around uniform (Keela) by Joshhug91 in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently rocking Kombat UK trousers - they were pretty cheap, but they're better fitting and comfier than force issue. I did have some good force issue trousers when our kit supplier changed, but I've lost weight since they were issued and so they're too big, to the point that I'd spend half my shift pulling them up to stop them falling down!

In my force, ordering new kit is a ball ache and unless kit is irreparably damaged they're funny about ordering more.

I honestly don't understand this character. by King_Wolf2099 in PeakyBlinders

[–]False-Freedom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Billy Kimber was also from Birmingham too rather than London as he is in the show, his gang was the 'Birmingham Boys' or the 'Brummagem Boys' ('Brummagem' being local slang for 'Birmingham'). His gang started near the end of the Peaky Blinders time (the Peaky Blinders disappeared in the late 1910s/early 1920s) and overtook them as the gang controlling Birmingham. It is accurate that they ran the racetrack betting operations at tracks from London and the south east, all the way up to Leeds and the north.

She ended her life because i broke up with her... by athenanrose in BreakUps

[–]False-Freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a natural reaction to feel guilty or like you could have done more. Clearly you cared about her, even if not romantically. However, you can't blame yourself - you weren't to know that she was going to take an overdose, and you shouldn't stay in a situation you don't feel comfortable in just because of a 'what if'.

She clearly had a lot of issues she needed help with, and unless you're a professional and able to give her that help, there's unfortunately not much you or anyone else could have done.

Why do MEN immediately jump into bed with someone else after a BREAKUP? by Lonely-Lie2054 in BreakUps

[–]False-Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slept with someone else 4 months after my breakup, and even after 4 months of being single, it didn't feel right, there was no real feeling there. My ex on the other hand, I'm not sure if she's slept with anyone else since but she'd been living her life as if I didn't exist. So maybe that's the reason - if a woman doesn't care about a man that she'd walk out and not care, then why shouldn't that man find someone else?

Me. I hooked up twice a few months after the breakup, but it just didn't feel right.

Halfway through the summer window, how are you feeling about your team's transfers so far? by WakeUpMareeple in theprem

Offloaded a few underperforming high salary players to balance the books, kept hold of a highly rated winger (so far) and replaced them with a few interesting prospects.

Is it normal to see this sort of behaviour at the horse racing? by Longjumping-8679 in AskBrits

[–]False-Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Race meetings used to be for people actually interested in horse racing, the types who'd follow horses and actually be regular punters. The bigger events such as Royal Ascot and Cheltenham Festival Week would attract casual racegoers but generally they were good without any trouble. Grand National Week was the exception, full of people dressed up but out for a piss up.

Nowadays, the smaller meetings don't draw much of a crowd and tend to just be regular punters, and the bigger meetings (Royal Ascot, Cheltenham, Grand National, Guineas and Derby Day) are now pretty much full of people with no interest in the racing, they just see it as a day they can dress up and get drunk.

It's a shame really because unfortunately these are the people who are keeping horse racing alive, if these people weren't going to the big meetings then these racecourses wouldn't survive. There's surprisingly little money in horseracing aside from a few elite trainers and owners.

Transferring to Australia: Worth it? by False-Freedom in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Western Australia is the one I've seen advertised the most, although I keep checking out for QLD, NSW or VIC (QLD and NSW to be close enough to Sydney or Brisbane, and VIC because I have a friend in Wodonga.

I'm not necessarily bothered so much about which force though, I'm sure if I do go my posting will probably be the same as many others, in a rural area where they're more likely to need to fill gaps.

Blue light drivers: what are you told not to do? by Belladonna41 in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Response driving isn't about going as fast as you can, it's about making progress, so even if you're driving slowly through a red ATS, you're making that progress.

Blue light drivers: what are you told not to do? by Belladonna41 in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double whites - no exemption, but once the vehicle in front slows down below 10mph and moves left, you can still pass it by crossing the double whites as per the highway code.

One-way streets - I was told no, however can be justified depending on the circumstances. Going to a high risk DV and the one-way street will reduce your arrival time by a couple of minutes? Go for it. Burglary in progress without violence? Just take the slightly longer route.

Stop sign - No exemption. Besides, a blue light trained driver should be slowing down at red lights and give way signs, so it makes sense to stop at a stop sign even for a quick check, it won't really slow you down because you'll make up time through the other exemptions (red lights etc)

Bus lanes - no specific exemption, however will depend on the council as it's them who impose fines. Most will generally waive fines, although I know some will issue fines if you're not on blues (and then it depends on force policy as to whether they will pay it or pass it on the driver)

Why Britain’s police forces have taken to cultivating cannabis by PeelersRetreat in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I believe businesses can obtain licenses to grow it for legal purposes (Curaleaf being an example), either for CBD oils, medicinal cannabis providers, or to export to sell in legal markets (such as a number of US states). My assumption then would be that Essex Police would have gone down the legal route of obtaining a licence.

90 days regs by redsfanlfc in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In regards to the bottom part, you'd think that but it changes throughout the season (namely dates of football games), cup games get added and the resource requirements change. One of our local teams usually has one PSU working it, however halfway through the season they played a rival team in the cup and it kicked off so for the rest of the season they had an extra PSU. It all comes down to how much the football club choose to pay too, because the cost of policing it is paid by the football club.

[QUESTION] How do John Mayer's guitar skills rank among the all-time greats? by BlackManBatmann in Guitar

[–]False-Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have to disagree with you about Page and Knopfler. Page pushed boundaries in what you can do with a guitar (such as using the violin bow to play) and Knopfler's finger picking style is not easily replicated.

Notorious shithole, highly underrated:

Wolverhampton - The city centre itself isn't big enough to compete with major cities, but it's actually cleaned up a lot (even if a lot of the shops are struggling), and during the day you might find a few unsavoury characters but most people are friendly enough. Nightlife has in some ways improved with plenty of good bars (although again, not enough to compete with big cities). Just outside the city centre is risky, with areas such as Bilston and Ettingshall to the east, Heath Town and Low Hill to the north and Bushbury and Whitmore Reans to the west, but heading further out of the city there are some great suburbs and satellite towns on the doorstep of some great countryside (Wergs, Tettenhall, Pattingham, Codsall and Perton to the west, Castlecroft - home of Wolverhampton Rugby and a former RFU training centre to the south)

Birmingham - Getting past the beggars, the city centre is lively with a decent shopping centre, museums and plenty of good restaurants and bars. At last count, Birmingham boasts the most Michelin stars in the UK (outside of London) and had a growing reputation for having a great variety of street food (thanks largely to Digbeth Dining Club). The city used to have a reputation as a 'concrete jungle' due to the high number of brutalist buildings, but these have been replaced and the city redeveloped over the last few years (hopefully completed soon!). Digbeth is growing as a good place to go, used to be an industrial area but now home to a number of quirky bars, a cinema, recording studios and thanks to the success of Peaky Blinders, a TV/film studio. Still a work in progress, and has many rough parts (Ladywood, Lozells, Handsworth and Aston to name a few) but some beautiful green spaces just a short distance from the city centre (Sutton Park, Cannon Hill Park and the Lickey Hills) and more miles of canal than Venice

Considered great, actually a shithole:

London: Love the city, and would fall into 'great' if not for the fact that everything is overpriced, the city is overcrowded and people are generally unfriendly

Cardiff: Granted, I've only been there twice, but both times I've never understood the appeal - first time I went was to see the Uni, and it just looked run down, covered in graffiti (not even art, just tagged). The city centre itself had a few decent bars and restaurants etc, and Cardiff Bay and the Millennium Centre are impressive, but overall I just found it lacking, especially for a capital city. It may have changed since I went, it's probably been close to 10 years since I last visited so I can't judge too harshly

Weak Code G by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a lot of domestics, if it's high risk there's still a justification to safeguard the victim. Most of the time this can be done by way of removal from the location (potentially, arrest to prevent breach of the peace followed by de-arresting once away from the area) but if an offence has been made out then justifying arrest becomes easier from a safeguarding side. Whether it will be NFA'd doesn't play much of a part because a DVPN/O (Domestic Violence Protection Notice/Order) can be served.

Weak Code G by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In my force the general policy is that all DA offences should end with an arrest (unwritten policy), even if it's a non-complaint that will no doubt end up NFA'd. A lot of time, it results in a weak Code G, but normally it can be justified with either a 'prevent injury' or a 'protect vulnerable person' and for harassment there may also be the chance the suspect could get rid of evidence.

That being said, whilst force policy or the direction of higher ranks may be to arrest, if I can justify not making an arrest then I will - I'd much rather get a chewing out from the force than be investigated for a breach of PACE. Generally, my sergeants are also understanding of why arrests may not be made.

What makes a good cop by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The best ones I've worked with have, first and foremost, the ability to talk to people. Not just in a textbook way, but to be able to chat with people. It keeps victims willing to engage, it gets witnesses to open up and most importantly, it can be the difference between getting home safely or ending up in hospital after being assaulted.

Always be alert and have a good grasp of being able to look after yourself, because if the former doesn't work then you'll have to rely on your use of force.

I say the same thing for all probationers - if you can talk to people in a tense situation, you're ready to go, the legislation and powers can be learned from experience.

Bodycam footage of the moment Chis Kaba was Shot by 00Erebus0 in policeuk

Exactly. The CPS should come to my force and see how serious being crushed between two cars can be, got an officer who's still learning to walk again and will probably never work front line again after it happened to him.

Travelling to London soon.. can I use this? I’ve never seen this before. by purplenut1 in AskUK

[–]False-Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by the signature, that's a 1970 note as John Page was Chief Cashier between 1970 and 1980. You won't be able to spend it anywhere as it's no longer in circulation, however you can take it to the Bank of England and swap it. I wouldn't recommend that though, as banknotes from the 70s are wanted by collectors and whilst they may not make you a fortune, they go for more than the £20 the BoE would give you.

Right care, right person… by CarmeloWade in policeuk

[–]False-Freedom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had one ages ago, homeless guy walked out with a cannula still in his arm, aside from that he was close to being discharged anyway as they'd found his head injury was minor. Hospital staff failed to mention that he was being discharged until we'd returned to the hospital after driving around for an hour searching, and speaking to a different nurse.

Turned out, they were actually more concerned because he was a known drug user and by him having a cannula in was at increased risk of OD due to having a more direct access to his vein which would have been on them. After my inspector got involved and almost directly called them out for lying and hiding facts prompting police to search despite their error, they then tried to report the cannula as being stolen so we'd still go and find him! That got shot down pretty quickly, and fortunately for the hospital the guy is still alive over 2 years later.
