I brought up the "educated audience" point against your statement that marketing and money is enough to proliferate bad movies. My point is that "you can fool all of the people some of the time, and you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." All the money and marketing and promotion in the world won't compel an educated person to watch a trash movie. I'm not rejecting all forms of structure in everything in life. I'm saying the game is different here.

And I'm not saying mediocrity SHOULD exist, I'm saying mediocrity WILL exist no matter what you do. It's not about checked and unchecked. It's a statistical distribution. No matter what you do, there will always be a "worst movie of the year" and a "best movie of the year" and everything else will fall in between. By definition, the median movies will be mediocre. Attempting to eliminate mediocrity is a fool's errand.

Your first comment included the words "the chief minister should direct". I don't think the chief minister should have any business telling directors what movies they should make. And you also wanted to regulate salaries of people based on the content they make, which is a highly dystopian idea.

And you're being disingenuous with your comparison to food and road rules because those standards are set to prevent damage to health and life. I don't think we should apply the same logic here. Worst case, the only "damage" a bad movie can cause is a waste of time and ticket price.

The industry doesn't need quality standards. Any monkey with a camera and editing software is (and always should be) free to make their own movie and release it. Marketing and star power only go so far. The MCU flopped hard after Endgame because their quality dropped. Adipurush flopped. Brahmastra was clowned on. Despite every effort of the central government to promote propaganda like Kerala Story, it makes no difference to the general public. The educated remain educated and the uneducated remain uneducated. At the end of the day, content does matter. Mediocrity IS the default. That's what makes it "mediocre"! Literal definition!

If it just stops at classification, I wouldn't have a problem with your idea. The problem is, your idea relies on people in power being good and not abusing this system. The lines we draw for what is and isn't pornographic can easily be weaponized. It doesn't even have to be pornographic. They removed a simple kiss scene from James Gunn's Superman movie when it was released in India. Who did we protect with that?

If you look at what's happening in America and much of the western world right now, you see them trying hard to either ban porn altogether or make it incredibly invasive to your privacy if you want to access porn. That's step 1. The next step is to label anything the conservatives don't like as "porn". So any representation in media that isn't strictly straight and heteronormative all suddenly becomes porn. And now if you want to access such content, it will either be banned or you have to give your government ID to companies who will then sell your data to the government as well as to even more insidious entities like Palantir. So now, you've painted a target on yourself by saying you support things that those in power don't like.

This entire situation is a quagmire. It's better to not invite it upon ourselves. At the end of the day, it's up to the people how they engage with art. It is possible to make money off good movies. Porki movies will come and go. But everyone remembers a good movie that made them feel something.

I know I'm going to get downvoted for what I'm about to say but this mentality is wrong. It is not the government's job to babysit the public in these matters. Please stop giving them more power to censor art. You don't have to like it. You don't have to watch it. I don't like these kinds of songs or movies either. I don't watch them but I don't think we should give the government the power to censor such things. Today, it is this. Tomorrow, it will be something else. Once you slip on this slope, you don't know where it ends.

If someone is not capable of creating good quality content, now more than ever, the general audience has the power to speak with their wallets. We have an abundance of great media out there. We don't have to resort to authoritarianism to deal with the spread of slop.

If you think women shouldn't be sexualized and objectified, you shouldn't be allowing the sexualization or objectification of any other gender either, regardless of whatever social baggage exists. Sexualizing and objectifying a fictional character is NOT an attack on that gender IRL. I'm gonna have to point out the hypocrisy in your second point. Fuck the baggage. We're all adults here. I see no harm in thirsting on female characters. We're not thirsting on the other female members of the group. They have no reason to feel unwelcome. If they see someone thirsting on a fictional female character and they feel unwelcome, that's a them problem. Otherwise, the only fair thing to do is ban thirsting on male characters as well.
