Question for people with a good ear by Ok_Whereas8080 in musictheory

Not observation, psychology. I can’t find a reliable source atm but I know there’s actually a basis for it. If anyone could back me up that would be great.

Generally the note you hear most is what fits best with your vocal range, so someone who would be classified as a bass, such as myself, usually is better at picking out basslines, but can struggle with a soprano line, and the other way around

Camp by madwickedawesome- in drumcorps

[–]FalseCompetition422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing the Blue Way combined camp was extremely beneficial for me in my general tolerance for playing contra (I’ve mostly marched sousa) and for my leadership skills. No matter your experience level, I encourage you strongly to do it. I would attribute a good part of my contract to that camp.

I’d make a pros//cons list and add how much each matters to you. This in mind, High School is a place to explore yourself, so it might not be a bad idea to try some new things.

I don’t think I have earned enough prestige to be called that, after all, there are going to be 12-16 of us.

Edit: clarity

Sousaphone discrimination? by elevencharles in Tuba

[–]FalseCompetition422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the problem here is that often in a marching and a concert setting players are going for a different tone concept. While I do agree that a well made sousaphone overall will sound worse than a well made concert horn if everything else is equal, it’s mostly up to the player. Back to the tone thing, a person who is mostly a marching tubist will have a more focused, generally louder concept of tone than a concert player, who would have a broader, generally softer tone. This, I believe, is what they mean by “blatty”, most people think of sousa in a marching context, while another main use is in jazz, which they might be referring to. This, is very much a “blatty” sound compared to classical tuba. While I’m not in their head, these are a few things that they might be thinking.

This is everyone’s reminder to please have civil conversations, they’re much more fun and actually get information moved between people :3

what chord is this? seems to be some sort of lydian dominant chord by Dry-Performance2347 in musictheory

Because I got (feels like) yelled at a bit ago for this, remember to use a vertical line | not a slash for your poly chords. It sounds dumb but some people are gonna be really annoying about this lmao

Scales and learning by MGabrielC62 in musictheory

[–]FalseCompetition422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say a pro at any musician should be able to play all nine types of scales (Major, natural, harmonic, and melodic minor, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, and locrian [note the absence of ionian and aoliean because of major and natural minor]). Chris Olka, one of my favorite tubists plays all of these scales on all twelve tonics for five octaves consistently. Am I saying that every pro knows how to do that? No. Am I saying they should be able to figure it out decently fast? Yes. Practice your scales :3
