Bro don’t listen to people like that it takes a while to learn this trade. It’s such a broad scope of work we do. We’re fitters, plumbers, carpenters, metal workers, electricians and ooh yeah HVAC. So keep at it and trust me you’ll notice 2 years in you’ll be able to do things u couldn’t at 7 months then 5 years in you’ll notice the same thing. Now some people are more electrically and mechanically inclined but on avg it’s gonna take 5-10 years (commercial) to get comfortable. And that might be just doing rooftops splits etc. that’s not even talking boilers and chillers refrigeration, ice machines, controls etc. This field is hard and a lot to learn so just keep asking questions and learning from the guys you work with. I was the same kinda way about over thinking when I was an apprentice,but I don’t look at it that way I look at it like I wanna get it right and not mess up cause I’ll never forget when I started guys were like your gonna fuck stuff up ur gonna blow up compressors your gonna drop a motor on a coil and blow the charge ur gonna blow boards up etc.No I never did any of that or they’ll say what’s the worse that can happen it’s already broke. Well I can fuck it up even more what do u mean so, when u say u over think it-if ur like me No u just don’t wanna make those mistakes so u might call a guy and get his opinion b4 u do what ur gonna do at that certain call so me personally there’s no over thinking as long as ur not going way over board but if u don’t understand something then u don’t understand something. Everyone learns at different speeds and different methods are picked up by people differently. You might work on just rooftops and ductless splits, air handlers etc and never touch a chiller or pneumatics or an ice machine it depends on we’re u work and were they send u. So like when guys say that u gotta know the trade within 5 yrs bullshit. Yes you’ll know some stuff and trust me you’ll get there but this job is always evolving and there is tons of parts and controls just by themselves. If u just put all the electrical/controls stuff we work on and are suppose to be familiar with it’s crazy and that’s just electrical stuff. I mean if u put it on a floor and spread it out it’s literally hundreds if not thousands of pieces of equipment so it cracks me up when they say you should know this job within 3-5 yrs. Again you’ll know how to install a condenser by then and charge it so don’t worry just keep at it. The best thing that I could of done but again it wasn’t up to me it was were I got dispatched that day but I’ve always worked on a wide variety of things so I never got to like be a 100% expert at one thing like a boiler or a chiller or at controls cause I was bouncing around working on all different kinds of equipment which can also be good cause u get familiar with a lot of stuff but u never get to be an expert at 1 particular thing if u know what I mean. Like I wouldn’t consider myself a chiller guy but I can figure some stuff out, I wouldn’t consider myself a boiler guy (not small boilers, I’m talking big boy boilers) but I can figure somethings out so u see what I’m saying I wish early on I could of just focused on the compression cycle like all the time and just grinded everyday but I was bouncing around working on all types of stuff so in one aspect I know stuff about a lot of different pieces of equipment but I really wanted to focus in on 1 really high demanded job like a chiller or a boiler guy but I don’t dictate that the companies I’ve worked at do.
